The choice of the optimal size for the bathroom according to snip

About what should be the minimum dimensions of the bathroom, and what area is considered optimal for this room, many apartment owners would probably like to know.

Do I need to do redevelopment, combining the toilet with the bathroom, or is this operation optional? Or maybe it’s worth attaching a part of the adjacent territory to the toilet: a corridor or a pantry?

It is useful to find out what size this room should be for the owners of suburban areas who decide to build a house.

Choose the size of the bathroom

A comfortable bathroom should not only contain all the necessary plumbing, but also be spacious enough for a comfortable visit.

According to SNiP standards:

 • There should be 70-110 cm of free space in front of the bathroom.
 • On both sides of the toilet - 25 cm square, and in front of it - 60 cm.
 • In front of the sink - 70cm.

There should be 70-75 cm of functional space in front of the bath

Based on this, you can calculate the optimal size of a bathroom for a city apartment.

Typically, a sink with a toilet in such a room is located along one wall, and a bathtub or shower stall is installed near the adjacent one.

The optimal functional area next to the washing machine is 90 cm.

The restroom should also have a place for a washing machine.

Therefore, 2x2-2.5x2.5m are the approximate optimal dimensions of a bathroom in a private house of a small area (combined) and in a city apartment. A convenient area for a shared restroom would be:

 • bathroom - 1.5x2 meters,
 • toilet - 0.9x1.5 meters.

The figures are approximate. In fact, it all depends on what dimensions the apartment has.

The optimal size of bathrooms in residential buildings and apartments. Photo of a comfortable room 6m2

Important: When drawing up a project for a house or redevelopment of an apartment, keep in mind that according to the standards, at least 80% of the area should fall on residential premises. For the bathroom, kitchen, hallway and pantry, respectively, 20% remains.For the bathroom, kitchen, hallway and pantry, respectively, remains 20%

For the bathroom, kitchen, hallway and pantry, respectively, 20% remains.

In most cottages, only combined toilets are usually arranged, the area of which is about 5-9 square meters.

Typical sizes of latrines

So, the approximate optimal area of the combined restroom in a typical apartment is 4-6 sq m, divided - 3 m2 for a bathroom and 1.

4m2 - for a bathroom.

What is the real state of affairs? The standard dimensions of the bathroom, if it is divided, in a small apartment are:

 • 0.88, 1.2, 1.5, 1.7, 1.8m2 - toilet,
 • 2 square meters and 2.5 square meters - bathroom.

The length and width of the bathroom in typical small apartments are usually far from optimal

That is, the bath in Khrushchev obviously does not reach the optimal size. The space in the toilet is not distributed very rationally.

Therefore, the combination of these premises in a small apartment is expedient.

After completing this procedure, you can increase the useful area of the restroom due to the thickness of the partition and it is more convenient to arrange plumbing.

Arranging plumbing after combining in the restroom can be more rational

In a typical Soviet-built apartment, the standard dimensions of a bathroom combined with a bathtub are usually 3-4 sq. M. The area, of course, is also not enough, but it is unlikely to change anything in this case.

Idea: If a pantry is adjacent to the combined bathroom in Khrushchev, you can try to attach it too.

Sometimes the owners of such restrooms also combine them with the adjacent corridor, arranging the entrance to the kitchen from the living room.

You can increase the area of a typical restroom by combining it with a pantry

Minimum bathroom dimensions

In Soviet times minimum size for bathrooms rarely observed. Therefore, many owners of apartments of a small area with very tiny toilets will probably be interested to know what they should be like in reality. So,

The dimensions of the bathroom SNiP (in meters) determines the following:

 • ceiling height - 2.5 (in the attic - 1.05);
 • the minimum width of a separate toilet is 0.8;
 • length -1.2;
 • the height of the corridor in front of the restroom is 1.1.

Typical toilet in Khrushchev size 1.2x0.8m2

Doors (whose standard width is 55-60cm without jambs) must open outwards. Unfortunately, the minimum dimensions of a shared bathroom, as well as a separate bathroom, are still not regulated by SNiP.

The following conclusion can be drawn from what has been said. Choosing the size of the restroom when drafting a house and when redeveloping an apartment should be guided by existing standards, as well as common sense and your own ideas about convenience.

Model overview

Different types of toilet bowls have different dimensions. One of the most ergonomic models is the device, the tank and the bowl in which form a single whole. The parameters of such a toilet are regulated by GOST.

It is available in 2 variations:

 • "compact" with a cast shelf (dimensions 60.5x34x37 cm);
 • analogue with a separate shelf (its dimensions are 46x36x40 cm).

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toiletsStandard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

Another model with a combined tank is a monoblock. Here the bowl and tank are made from a single piece of ceramics, representing an integral structure. The difference between the monoblock and the previous version is the absence of connecting elements between the bowl and the tank.

For small toilets, corner toilets are often chosen. They can be floor or mounted, their characteristic feature is a triangular cistern. The average sizes are: width - within 34-37 cm, length - 72-79 cm, and height - 45-50 cm.

A wall-hung or console toilet allows you to visually increase the space of the room, although it is incorrect to say that it is much more compact than a floor-standing one. In such a toilet, only the toilet bowl built into the wall and the drain button are visible to the user. The bowl and other communications are installed on a metal frame, called an installation, which is hidden behind a false panel. The organization of the latter also "eats" the useful area of the toilet. However, due to the built-in bowl, the space under the floor is freed up, and the whole structure looks less cumbersome due to the absence of a tank in the field of view. The parameters of the wall-hung toilet bowl vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. On average, they are 35-37 cm wide, 48 to 58 cm long, and 42 cm high.

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toiletsStandard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

Dimensions of standard floor-standing toilets are 520x340 mm with a height of 400 mm. American and European counterparts are usually 7-10 cm longer.

In addition to the dimensions of the toilet bowl, it is also important to take into account the characteristics of the outlet pipe, since the size of the gap between the toilet bowl and the wall depends on the type of connection of the device to the sewerage system. The most compact will be a toilet with an oblique outlet

The sewer pipe coming out of the wall can be “extended” to the required parameters using pipes or corner fittings. Devices with direct release are considered the most “capricious”, since the system requires fastening to the floor, or rather, to the pipe coming out of it. The maximum that can be thought of in such a system is the turn of the structure along the axis in one direction or another.

When calculating the volume of the drain tank, you need to focus on the fact that 13 liters of water are consumed in one trip to the toilet.As a rule, this is the standard volume of the tank. You can reduce water consumption by installing a double drain system and “dividing” the tank into 2 compartments of 6 and 3 liters. Installing such a device, on average, saves up to 6,000 liters of water per person per year.

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

There are 4 types of installation of the drain tank:

 • monoblock (there is no connection between the bowl and the tank);
 • compact version (cistern on the toilet bowl);

 • hidden (installed on the installation);
 • suspension.

In addition to the dimensions of the toilet itself, the parameters of components and accessories also affect the space it occupies. So, when organizing side and wall models, installation is necessary. Its dimensions are determined by the dimensions of the toilet bowl and may be different. Frames with a width of 50 cm and a height of 112 cm are considered standard.

When installing the structure, the dimensions of the corrugated pipe are of no small importance. Its purpose is to drain water from the toilet

It is made of hard or soft plastic. With a cuff length of the device less than 130 mm, the length of the corrugation should be 200-1200 mm. Diameter - corresponding to the model of the toilet bowl, to which such a drain is attached.

The height of the toilet bowl depending on the type

Toilets are divided into types:

 • ordinary (outdoor);
 • suspended (with installation);
 • bidet;
 • with hanging tank.

The parameters of a conventional toilet bowl are determined by the size of its “legs” and the size of the drain body. Dimensional characteristics of the drain tank may also vary. The suspended device is deprived of vertical support, as it is attached to a mechanism hidden in the wall. Its main dimensional parameter is the height of the drain body.It is designed taking into account the lack of vertical support and ease of use.

Bidet - a device that is not equipped with a drain tank. The water supply point is connected directly to it. It can be stationary or suspended. A toilet bowl with a hanging cistern allows you to hang the cistern from above the location of the seat. The distance between them can reach 180 cm.

Mounting Recommendations

Installation of a toilet bowl is a relatively simple process, in most cases this work does not require the involvement of professionals. The instruction, which is necessarily attached to each device, greatly simplifies the matter.

First of all, it is necessary to dismantle the old toilet bowl, having previously turned off the water and scooped up water from the bowl. It is necessary to unfasten the mounting bolts, if necessary, beat the bowl off the floor and the sewer pipe.

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

The next step is to provide a level and smooth floor surface for the installation of the new appliance. While the base is being prepared and dried (for example, after screeding the floor or leveling it with cement mortar), it is necessary to assemble the toilet bowl. Then you should make the necessary markup. It is more convenient to make the necessary marks in the floor by placing the bowl on the prepared base and marking the fixation points with a pencil (there are special perforations on the “leg” of the toilet for this, through which you can draw points with a pencil on the floor).

The toilet bowl is connected to the sewer using a corrugation, the tank is connected to a cold water pipe using a flexible hose. The latter is brought to the tank from below or from the side.

After the toilet is installed, it is necessary to seal all joints with silicone sealant and allow the sealant to dry.After that, you need to make a control use of the equipment (drain the water several times) and check the correct operation of the system. If everything is in order, you can mount the seat.

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

The installation of a hidden tank begins with the installation of the installation on which the tank is attached. Further, the stages of work are identical to those described above, the process ends with checking the correctness of the work and the subsequent installation and decoration of the false wall.

How to choose a lid and toilet seat

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

To choose the right toilet seat for the toilet, you need to know exactly the dimensions of the plumbing. It is believed that the lid should exceed the dimensions of the toilet by about 0.5 centimeters, however, this is not a necessary condition at all. To make accurate measurements, you need to find out three main parameters:

Distance between mounting holes.
The length from the mounting axis to the end of the cover.
The distance from the mounting axis to the outer rim of the toilet bowl.

In addition, you need to take into account an important nuance: the shape of the lid must match the rim of the toilet bowl.

For the disabled, convenient modifications of covers with handles are provided:

What is this mysterious micro-elevator?

For ease of use of plumbing, additional accessories are sometimes included in the design of the toilet. One of these elements is a microlift. In terms of technical parameters, the microlift is similar to a conventional door closer and performs similar functions. The task of the microlift is to ensure a smooth lowering of the lid on the rim of the toilet, excluding sharp blows that can damage the toilet seat and ceramics.

Toilets with a microlift can be found in any plumbing store, the installation of this element is practically not reflected in the cost of the product.

Toilet accessories

Any toilet bowl usually comes with various accessories and accessories. These include seats, covers, solid installations, various corrugations, cuffs, etc. All these items are a necessary addition for the comfortable use of this type of plumbing.

How to choose a toilet seat?

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

When choosing a toilet seat, some important nuances should be taken into account: the seat must match the size of the toilet rim, it should not be too narrow, while the width of the seat should be 1 cm wider than the rim.

When choosing a seat, it is best to give preference to models made of durable material that can withstand their own weight, as seats made of soft material quickly fail. The seat surface must be smooth. If it is sheathed with material, then it should not have wrinkles, and if it is made of plastic, it should be without notches so that being on the toilet does not cause discomfort.

It is undesirable to use wooden seats that have not been treated with any protective and antibacterial agents, since wood tends to absorb harmful fumes and can become a source of the spread of harmful bacteria that, once on the skin and mucous membranes, can cause various diseases.

Toilet seats are commercially available with a special antibacterial coating, or even made of a material that has such properties. Such seats are much more expensive, but they benefit health and protect the body from infections.

Toilet installations

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

One of the ways to install plumbing equipment is to use installations that are used for attached or built-in toilets with separate flush tanks. This method of fixing the toilet bowl allows you to hide all the components and elements of the system behind a false panel, leaving only the toilet bowl and the button for draining in the wall visible.

The sizes of installations can be varied, depending on the size of the toilet bowl, but they almost do not differ from each other. Most often there are installations 112 cm high, 50 cm wide, on which both the toilet bowl and the tank are attached.

Corrugation standards

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

When installing a toilet, the dimensions of the corrugations are of great importance. The corrugation is intended for removal of sewage from a toilet bowl in the sewerage. It is soft and hard, made of durable plastic.

If the length of the toilet cuff does not exceed 130 mm, then the corrugation should be much longer - 200-1200 mm. The diameter of the corrugation must match the model of the toilet to which it is attached. Pipes can either be bent at an angle of 45 degrees, or straight and combined, having a corrugated part in the place of the intended bend.

Cuffs for toilet bowls

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toilets

When installing the cuff for the toilet, it is important to ensure that it fits snugly against the toilet. It should not hang freely, but also be too narrow

To choose the correct size of the cuff, you need to immediately measure the outer diameter of the outlet of the toilet, and in accordance with the measurements, select the size of the cuff. As a result, you will get a reliable and high-quality connection of plumbing equipment to the sewerage system.

The diameter and length of cuffs for toilet bowls depends on the specific model of sanitary equipment. They can be wide and narrow, long and short.The length varies from 112 mm to 120-130 mm, and its diameter depends on the design of a particular toilet model. The corrugated collar is best mounted, as it is easy to bend and adapt to any installation model. In the case of using a fan pipe instead of a cuff, the installation will become a little more complicated. Usually, plastic cuffs and pipes are used in the installation, much less often - rubber.

How to choose a toilet lid?

The toilet lid does not have to exceed the diameter of the seat. In some models, the lid is much smaller than the seat, but despite this, it tightly closes the toilet opening.

When choosing a lid, it is important to ensure that it closes tightly, which is key in choosing this structural element.

If you take the choice of sanitary equipment with all responsibility, take into account all the nuances of installation, select the appropriate accessories and components, you are guaranteed to be provided with a decent level of comfort when using this equipment. Having renovated the toilet, you will take care of the convenience of all family members, making the stay in the toilet pleasant and safe.

Calculation of the dimensions of the toilet bowl with a tank in terms of

If the dimensions of the room allow, then it is possible to choose a wide floor version of the toilet bowl. It is worth noting that it is best to update the premises both in terms of finishing materials and plumbing equipment, pre-compiling paper, and in this regard, note all the necessary changes. In the space of a small toilet, it is worth choosing compact models, as the standard ones will take up too much space.

Standard toilet dimensions: typical dimensions and weights of different types of toiletsIf you decide to order a toilet bowl of non-standard sizes, then you must first complete its drawing

The compact models include the toilet:

 • Angular;
 • Suspension;
 • Embedded;
 • With flat tank.

With regards to parameters such as width, depth and height, these are individual sizes that each person selects for himself. Experts recommend selecting plumbing equipment, focusing on the tallest member of the family, since you can put a step for children, but with great growth it is quite difficult to bend to the floor to operate the toilet.

There is a certain guest, according to which Russian companies manufacture toilet bowls:

 • 335 x 405 x 290 mm - children's model;
 • 400 x 460 x 360 mm - a model in which there is no solid shelf;
 • 370 x 605 x 340 mm - a model in which there is a solid shelf.

The first is the height, the second is the length, and the third is the width. When buying, you should focus on the level of comfort, since it will depend on it whether it is possible to relieve yourself pleasantly and without inconvenience or not.

Standard and minimum dimensions of the bathroom, choosing the optimal size

When buying a new home, few people pay attention to the size of the bathroom. But this room is one of the most frequently used in an apartment / house.

Therefore, it is very important that the bathroom be of sufficient area so that it can accommodate the necessary plumbing fixtures, household appliances, at least a minimum of furniture, and at the same time it is comfortable to use.

Therefore, it is very important that the bathroom is of sufficient area so that it can accommodate the necessary plumbing fixtures, household appliances, at least a minimum of furniture, and at the same time it is comfortable to use it.

In this article, we will consider the norms by which bathrooms are built, their minimum and typical sizes.

How to choose the right size for the future bathroom, optimal dimensions

In order for the bathroom to be functional and convenient to use for each family member, you should know the optimal sizes of bathrooms in residential buildings:

 • room width - at least 80 cm;
 • height - about 250 cm;
 • depth - at least 120 cm.

Having removed the dimensions of the combined bathroom, you can rationally use its area when arranging plumbing. The toilet should be approached at least 60 cm and 25 cm to the left and right of it. To access the sink, leave 70 cm, the comfortable height of its location is 80-90 cm. Free access to the bathroom or shower is 70-120 cm.

On a note: according to the unspoken rule, frequently used items in the bathroom should be within arm's reach.

Plumbing installation rules

The dimensions of a bathroom in a private house, as a rule, are not as limited as in a city apartment, so they allow you to place any plumbing. But for small bathrooms in multi-storey buildings, it is better to choose compact models.

Typical dimensions of bathrooms

Consider options for planning rooms with standard bathroom sizes.

Small rooms 2x2 m, as well as 1.5x2 m - the minimum area that a person needs. If the bathroom and toilet are separate, it makes sense to combine them and expand the usable space.

Note: this type of redevelopment, which does not involve the transfer of pipes, is agreed upon according to a simplified scheme.

Examples of planning mini-bathrooms with an area of 2 square meters. meters and 3 m2

Bathroom area from 4 sq. m. up to 6 sq. m. m.already has enough space to complete the washing machine, a small locker for things. Depending on the location of the door, plumbing can be placed either around the perimeter of the room, or on opposite sides.

Layout of medium-sized bathrooms in a panel house

In a 7 sq. m. fit the necessary plumbing and household appliances. If there are many people living in the apartment, you can install two sinks, or a second bathing tank.

Tip: it is advisable to divide a large bathroom into functional areas.

Bathroom layout options 7 sq. m.

If the bathroom is narrow and long, then the bathing tank is installed in the very back of the room. The toilet, sink and bidet are best placed along the walls in the order in which they are most frequently used.

Ways to plan a narrow bathroom

Minimum sizes of bathrooms

Bathrooms and toilets in apartments of different sizes and houses of different types differ in area and configuration. Determines the minimum dimensions of the bathroom SNiP (full name "Sanitary norms and rules") for residential premises.

The minimum dimensions of a separate toilet complete with a toilet bowl and a sink depend on how the door is opened in the room. The size of the doorway of the bathroom and toilet is 75x210 cm, the width of the door is 60-70 cm.

If the door opens outward, then a space of 0.9x1.15 m will be enough for convenient use. If the door opens into the room, taking part of its area, then the minimum dimensions of the toilet are 0.9x1.45 m.

Minimum toilet dimensions

The minimum dimensions of a shared bathroom with a shower

If the hygienic room is equipped with a tank-bath, the minimum width of the bathroom, depending on the location of the plumbing, will already be 2.1x2.1 m, or 2.35x1.7 m (2.35x2.5 m).

Minimum dimensions of a bathroom with a tank-bath

Important: when building new buildings, the minimum dimensions of the bathroom, regulated by SNiP, must be taken as a basis.

Outcome

The dimensions of the bathroom are of great importance, especially if a large family lives in the house / apartment. Knowing the minimum dimensions of the bathroom and how to organize the space, you can even make a small bathroom comfortable.

How to choose?

There is no strictly defined standard for the dimensions of installation frames. In each case, the choice is made taking into account the dimensions and design features of the toilet room. With enough free space, you can think about installing larger structures, including even a bidet.

If there is a main wall in the room, it is worth considering block models of installation frames. Often it is required to equip a non-standard room in a limited space. In such cases, experts recommend studying the dimensions of corner structures.

It turns out that it is necessary to choose a box for the subsequent installation of plumbing, taking into account not only personal preferences. In this case, we are also talking about the features of the installation and connection of all products. So, for example, the dimensions of the installation for the built-in toilet bowl are selected taking into account the distance from the bowl to the wall or pieces of furniture. This value must be at least 60 cm, otherwise the use of the toilet will be uncomfortable, since the legs will rest against the mentioned obstacles.

Standard systems are suitable for equipping larger rooms. The bowl in such cases is installed 18-20 cm from the box. And the distance mentioned above is recommended to be maintained on all sides of the plumbing device.

Before buying and starting installation, you should carefully study the plan of the toilet or bathroom. This will allow you to choose the most convenient and most suitable place for plumbing and its dimensions.

Pay special attention to the following points

 • With a standard installation of the frame near the walls of the toilet room, you can choose both block and frame models. Their dimensions are selected taking into account the dimensions of the plumbing and the room.
 • If you want to install a plumbing system in a small room, in the attic or under the window, then small-sized models should be considered. Their height should not exceed 85 cm.
 • For the installation of plumbing on both sides of the box, installations with appropriate fasteners (two-sided) and dimensions are designed.
 • When equipping rooms in which it is necessary to install several hanging toilet bowls at once, special installations are chosen. We are talking about linear structures with a height of 115 cm.

The vast majority of frames are rectangular in shape. At the same time, they should be chosen taking into account the commensurability of the parameters of the product itself and the niche. In cases where the box is larger, the voids are usually filled with materials that have soundproofing properties.

The standard dimensions of the built-in models of toilet bowls are as follows:

 • height - from 35 to 45 cm;
 • depth - from 50 to 60 cm;
 • width - from 30 to 40 cm.

Although these parameters are standard, they may vary.

It should be remembered that now manufacturing companies offer more than a wide range of models. We can talk about special children's toilets, as well as products with enlarged bowls. In addition, plumbing is produced for people with disabilities and heavy weight. Naturally, all these factors will determine the choice of installation structures and their dimensions.

In addition to all of the above, you should take into account the size of the drain tank. In the vast majority of cases, the thickness of suspended plastic devices is 9.5 cm, and their width is 0.5 m

The height of such tanks, as a rule, is slightly larger than those of conventional models. This size varies from 55 to 60 cm.

When choosing a frame for mounting built-in plumbing, you need to remember the design features of various types of systems. So, frame options have a depth in the range of 15-30 cm (more often we are talking about the minimum parameter). In height, such models can be from 85 to 140 cm, and their maximum width is 60 cm.

The following dimensions must also be taken into account:

 • the center of the sewer pipe is located 22 cm from the level of the floor covering;
 • distance between mounting holes is 18 to 23 cm.

The minimum dimensions of block installations, as a rule, are identical to those of frame structures. Their depth can be from 10 to 15 cm, and height - up to 1 meter. It is also necessary to take into account the possibility of separate installation of the built-in tank and the toilet bowl. The latter in such cases is not attached in a niche, but directly to the wall.

For more information about the installation for the toilet, see further in the video.

Tips & Tricks

The difficulty of the installation processes lies not in the long work, but in the nuances, without taking into account which the toilet bowl will quickly fail.

It is worth paying attention to the following recommendations of experts:

 • it is better to install any toilet as close as possible to the sewer drain;
 • the drain button is installed at a height of 1 meter;
 • the distance between the floor and the drain pipe should be 22–23 cm;
 • all markings must be accurate, it is best to make them bold and visible, measuring them several times;
 • before the drywall box is finally closed and lined, the entire system should be checked for leaks and odors, otherwise it will no longer be possible to get to them;
 • the assembly of the metal frame must correspond to the horizontal and vertical levels, if necessary, increase or decrease the slope using a device such as a building level;
 • When tightening nuts on a ceramic surface, care must be taken not to scratch the surface.

Tables of sizes of a toilet bowl and its device. Dimensions of floor, hanging, corner, large and small sanitary ware

Without a doubt, when planning a bathroom, the toilet plays a key role. The right choice of sanitary ware helps not only to save the interior space of the room, but also provides comfort when performing hygiene procedures.In the modern market of sanitary equipment, you can find toilet bowls of various shapes, sizes and installation methods.

Plumbing fixtures with a funnel-shaped, visor and dish-shaped bowl are considered the standard (see fig.). The disc version can be considered obsolete despite an infrequent, but still presence in hardware stores. Funnel and visor have their own pros and cons. One form is good for everyone, but splashes a lot, the other has almost no splashes, but more often a brush is required and the noise level is higher when lowering the water.

Sanitary ware is also divided according to the method of installation. Classics of the genre floor and hanging toilet bowls, which can be found in both corner and wall versions. It’s quite easy to get confused in such a variety, so consider the standard sizes that you can focus on when choosing plumbing.

Norms

A bathroom plays an important role in creating a comfortable and functional home. It largely depends on its size:

 • how you will place all the main plumbing structures (bath, shower cabin, as well as a sink, washbasin and bidet);
 • how engineering communications will be laid;
 • what types of finishes can be used.

The minimum allowable area of toilets, as well as other parameters related to the dimensions of these premises, are legally regulated through GOSTs and SNiPs - they establish the footage of baths and toilets in residential apartments, as well as permissible parameters for public buildings for various purposes.

When starting redevelopment work in your home, you should carefully study the entire legal framework in this area. Otherwise, you risk facing the fact that the result of your work may be recognized as not complying with current standards, illegal and subject to dismantling.

Please note: for Belarus, as well as Ukraine and a number of other CIS countries, the SNiP standards regarding the footage of bathrooms may differ significantly from those approved in our country. Standards for some regions of the Russian Federation may have their own differences

A certain group of restrictions also applies to the specifics of the placement of sanitary rooms in apartment buildings. So, you may be denied approval of redevelopment if you intend to place a restroom above the kitchen or above the living area, with the exception of only 2-level apartments with large footage.

The only option when the construction and redevelopment of the toilet can be carried out without taking into account the standard is to carry out work in a cottage, private house or in the country. If you are not going to connect intra-house communications to a common sewer riser and a central water supply system, then there are no requirements to strictly follow the current standards.

Let's figure out what is the optimal size of the sanitary room. Dimensions of the hygienic room in the apartment:

 • depth - not less than 1.2 m;
 • width - not less than 0.8 m;
 • ceiling height - not less than 2.5 m;
 • distance from the toilet bowl to the inclined plane of the roof (for toilets equipped in the attic) - 1.05-1.1 m;
 • ceiling height in the hallway near the entrance to the restroom - not less than 2.1 m.

Additionally, recommendations are made regarding the placement of plumbing and the distances between the individual elements of the bathroom configuration:

 • between the toilet bowl and the bidet - from 25 cm;
 • in front of the bath bowl - from 70 cm of unoccupied space;
 • near the toilet - from 60 cm;
 • on both sides of the toilet - from 25 cm;
 • in front of the sink - from 70 cm.

The exit from the toilet should lead either to the hallway or to the corridor - it is not recommended to place it near the kitchen, dining room or living rooms.

Bathrooms installed for users with disabilities are subject to separate regulation. In accordance with accepted standards for the disabled, the parameters of the restroom should have the following dimensions:

 • width -1, 65 m;
 • depth - 1.8 m.

According to the law, the installation of additional plumbing equipment (bidets and urinals) is optional, but their installation is desirable. In addition, it is necessary to choose the optimal location of plumbing, so that the user on the wheelchair can easily get there without outside help.

It is mandatory to install handrails near the toilet and washstand, the optimal height of their placement is 75 cm.

It is desirable that on the side where a person changes from a chair to a toilet, the latter should be folding.

Varieties

Toilets with horizontal outlet are produced in a wide variety of modifications. Let's name the main models at the place of installation.

 1. Floor. Ordinary (everyone knows them) toilet bowls both today and in the last century. Attached to the floor. Basically, compact toilets are now being installed.
 2. Suspended.These models are hung on the wall, have a high release and are divided into frame and block systems according to the method of fastening. All communications (and in some cases a tank) are hidden behind a false panel or in a wall niche. It is convenient to clean under such toilet bowls, as they hang over the floor.
 3. Attached (wall). They are popular lately. They are tightly mounted to the wall, while all communications, just like with suspended models, are hidden, and only the bowl remains outside. The difference from the suspended ones is that the bowl is not suspended, but is installed on the floor, like the floor-standing versions of the toilet bowls.

According to the design of drain tanks, toilet bowls are divided into several varieties.

 1. With a high drain. The tank is mounted on the wall and has a drain pipe. The model itself is archaic, found in old houses, however, such models, but slightly improved, can be found on sale. Sometimes they are also used in modern houses, where the decoration is designed in the so-called historical style. Pretty noisy build.
 2. With a low drain. A standard flush system in which a plastic or ceramic cistern is mounted low above the toilet and has a short flush pipe.
 3. Hidden bins. They are built into the wall and closed with an easily dismantled finish. Only the flush lever remains outside.
 4. Compact bathroom. The bowl is attached to the bowl. The most common type of toilet today.
