Advantages and disadvantages of a septic tank
The septic tank is suitable for installation both in cottages with seasonal residence, and in suburban areas where the owners live permanently.
It does not need frequent cleaning; for its effective operation, it is quite enough to remove the accumulated sediment once every two years using sewage equipment. The treatment plant can provide comfortable living for a family of five.

Septic Kedr - optimal treatment system for country cottages and garden areas. It is quite possible to install the tank on your own, without resorting to the services of specialists
The installation has become quite widespread in Russia, where it has been used for more than four years. It is perfectly adapted to the climatic conditions of our country. The septic tank belongs to budget-class devices, however, in terms of its consumer characteristics, it may well compete with equipment of a higher price category.
Among the advantages of the model are the following:
- the equipment provides a sufficiently high level of filtration, since the water goes through several stages of purification, and the process itself can be activated by adding special biological products;
- compact vertical design does not require much space;
- the treatment plant can be located at a short distance from the house;
- the septic tank is light in weight, which allows you to independently install the tank without the involvement of special equipment;
- the case made of durable plastic is not subject to corrosion and reliably protects the structure from moisture, dirt and other external influences, so that the septic tank can be fully operated for thirty years or more;
- all processes in a completely hermetic design take place inside the plant, without releasing any impurities and unpleasant odors into the external environment, which indicates the environmental safety of the plant;
- the treatment system is non-volatile and does not require additional energy costs;
- the septic tank is buried deep into the ground, so that the tank does not need additional insulation;
- equipment does not require complex maintenance;
- the cost of the treatment system does not exceed 60 thousand rubles, which is significantly lower than plants with similar characteristics.
However, the Cedar septic tank, in addition to its advantages, also has some disadvantages that must be considered when buying a device.
The water that has been treated in the installation is not so pure that it immediately enters the soil or drains into open sources, the degree of its purification is about 75%.

The filtration field is designed for post-treatment of water coming from the septic tank. For its organization, you need a large space. If there is no extra area on the site, it is better to install an absorption well, which takes up much less space.
Therefore, it requires additional purification in other filtration systems, which involves the construction of sites for filtration. And these are free areas that need to be found on the site, and extra costs for arranging an absorption well or filtration fields.
In addition, the septic tank requires periodic cleaning with the help of sewage equipment, which also implies additional costs.
Specifications
The Kedr treatment plant is the best option for creating an autonomous sewage system for a family of up to 5 people, with permanent residence. Recommended for use on light soils with good water absorption (sand, loam, etc.). With a high level of groundwater and a weak soil carrying capacity, it is necessary to make a forced drainage of wastewater using a drainage pump.
The table shows the main technical characteristics of the septic tank:
| Volume (m³) | Productivity (m³/day) | Degree of cleaning (%) | The size | Weight (kg) | |
| Diameter (mm) | Height (mm) | ||||
| 3 | 1 | 75 | 1400 | 3000 | 150 |
The degree of purification is only 75%, which, accordingly, does not allow water to be discharged directly into the ground, therefore, additional filtration fields or the installation of infiltrators are required.
Installation of a septic tank Cedar
This station involves installation in sand or fine loam where there is a low level of groundwater.
Installing a Kedr septic tank involves three main steps:
Excavation. Prepare trenches for the pipeline in the pit in which the station will be installed. Fill the dug hole with sand, tamp it down and lower the concrete base onto the finished sand cushion. It could be a concrete slab.
Installation of a septic tank Cedar. Install the station in the prepared hole
At this stage, it is important to lay the inlet and outlet pipeline through which sewage water will be pumped.
Filling the station. Backfill the off-grid sewage treatment plant with sand and get it working.
Next, be sure to set up the work of underground filtration, which performs post-treatment of wastewater already treated in a septic tank. Water that has passed the final clarification is absorbed by the soil or is collected in a water intake well.

Technical features of Kedr septic tank models
At the moment, one model of the septic tank is being produced.
| Model name | Volume, m3 | Productivity, m3/day | Dimensions (diameter, height), mm | Weight, kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Septic Cedar | 3,0 | 1,0 | 1400x3000 | 150 |
Septic Kedr completed made of polypropylene and suitable for used by a family of five. In order for the station to work efficiently and produce optimal cleaning, it is necessary to use certain biological preparations that will help decompose the waste.This will extend the life of the device. The best bacterial complex is UNIBAC. The biological product contains microgranules, which contain microorganisms necessary for the station. When they enter the septic tank, they begin their dissolution, reproduction and waste processing.
Once a year, all unnecessary residues must be pumped out of the installation using a sewage truck.
If any adverse hydrogeological conditions occur, then the fourth chamber of the septic tank begins to perform the task of a sedimentation tank for treated sewage. Water begins to be forcibly discharged using a drainage pump into the filter trench.
Cost (price) of a septic tank Cedar
| Model name | Price, rub |
|---|---|
| Septic Cedar | 60000 |
This station is one of the most economical options among other competing septic tanks.
It is very important that, despite the low cost, the quality of sewage treatment remains extremely high.
Description
The local treatment plant, produced under the Kedr brand, is a monoblock vertical structure, which is divided into several separate sections inside. Installation dimensions allow you to install a septic tank even in a small area.

The case is made of a polymeric material - polypropylene, it differs in:
- resistance to corrosion;
- chemical inertness;
- sufficient mechanical strength to withstand the loads exerted by the ground.

The installation is completely sealed, so leakage of contaminated liquid into the ground, as well as penetration into the installation of groundwater, is excluded.
Device
The septic tank, manufactured under the Kedr brand, is an installation that looks like a vertically oriented cylinder.The case is made of durable plastic and is absolutely sealed, so its installation cannot harm the environment.

The internal capacity is divided into sections, and each of the sections has a specific purpose.
What processes take place in the chambers?
Entering the septic tank through the pipeline, the effluents go through several stages of treatment:

- The receiving chamber is used to collect contaminated liquid. Here the drains settle. Under the influence of gravitational forces, the liquid is divided into several fractions, depending on the specific gravity;
- The precipitated solids are subjected to anaerobic decomposition, where the microorganisms contained in the effluents take part;
Water is discharged to filtration sites. If, due to high-lying groundwater, above-ground filtration cassettes are installed, then a pump is included in the system, with the help of which water from the septic tank is supplied to the cassette located higher in level.

Characteristics and dimensions
So far, only one modification of the Kedr septic tank has been produced, designed for operation in summer cottages or in small houses. Model characteristics:
- Case diameter - 1.4 meters;
- Hull height - 3 meters;
- Weight - 150 kg;
- The daily capacity of the model is 1000 liters.
How a septic tank works
The Cedar septic tank involves a phased purification of wastewater with the help of microorganisms that survive in an airless environment. For them, organic waste is a nutrient medium.
As mentioned earlier, cleaning takes place in several stages.
- First, the lines enter the receiving chamber, where they are separated into large and small fractions.
- Partially treated wastewater enters the second chamber through a small vertical slot. Activated sludge is formed here due to the presence of a colony of anaerobic bacteria. This process contributes to the primary clarification of juices.
- Through several vertical slots, water passes into the third tank with a replaceable biofilter. Such equipment has a grate, so that activated sludge does not pass further through the system. There is also a special filler that provides additional wastewater treatment.
- Purified water enters the last chamber, after which it passes into a drainage trench or a filtration well. For these purposes, sometimes it is necessary to additionally install a pump.
Advantages of this septic tank
Once inside the septic tank, the effluents go through several stages of purification, which is accompanied by the separation of fractions and gradual decomposition. The process is activated by adding special bacteria to the waste. The saturation with bacteria depends on the volume of the tank and the amount of wastewater received.

The scheme of the septic tank "Cedar" allows you to consider its simple design
In addition to a simple and understandable design, the Kedr septic tank has the following advantages:
- easy installation in a small area pit;
- installation without the participation of heavy equipment;
- tightness;
- anti-corrosion material (durable plastic);
- the possibility of installation near the house (but not closer than 5 m);
- service life - 30 years or more;
- affordable price.
Device and principle of operation
A sealed container made of durable material - polypropylene - plays the role of a sump isolated from the environment.This is an autonomous treatment facility necessary for the accumulation and disinfection of waste in places where there is no centralized sewage system - for example, in a country house.

To install the Kedr Septic tank, a small plot of land near the house is enough, but one should not forget about additional drainage structures - a trench or a filtration field
A septic tank differs from a conventional tank in that it consists of several chambers, each of which has its own functional focus.
Camera assignment
1 - receives wastewater that flows by gravity from the building. All suspensions are divided into two groups: heavy solid particles sink to the bottom, forming a sediment, and light fats rise to the surface of the water and accumulate there in the form of a thick film.
2 - under the influence of anaerobic bacteria, there is a moderate treatment of wastewater, their partial clarification.
3 - a replaceable biofilter, which must be washed from time to time, collects aerobic and anaerobic microflora.
4 - the clarification process ends. If there is a need to raise the level of filtered water, a drainage pump is installed in this chamber.

When ordering a septic tank, you need to remember about its various versions, which differ in the height of the head
Technical characteristics of the installation
-
- height - 3 m;
- diameter - 1.4 m;
- total weight - 150 kg;
branch pipes (DN 110) are provided for connection with inlet and outlet sewer pipes; eyeliner at a distance of 1.2 m from the top, outlet - 1.4 m.

The well-thought-out composition of the drainage will allow you to maximally clean the water coming from the septic tank
Device and principle of operation
The septic tank is a sealed monoblock unit made of the strongest polypropylene, consisting of four compartments. The height of the structure is 3m, the diameter is 1.4m.The weight of the septic tank is 150 kg. Some models may have a higher or lower head.
In each chamber there is an individual stage of biological treatment. Waste flows from compartment to compartment by gravity thanks to a system of nozzles that are part of the product package. The operation of a septic tank is based on two types of processing and cleaning - mechanical and biological, and is carried out according to the following scheme:

- Acceptance and separation of impurities. Wastewater from the premises through the sewer pipes enters the first chamber. Here, the waste is divided into fractions: heavy and solid accumulate at the bottom, and light ones form a film on the surface. When the first chamber is full, the waste flows through the overflow into the second compartment.
- Lightening. The effluents that have entered the second chamber continue to settle to the bottom. Here begins the activity of anaerobic bacteria, which decompose organic waste in an airless environment.
- mechanical filtration. The third compartment is a replaceable biofilter, which is inhabited by colonies of bacteria. Here, the process of decomposition of organic matter continues more intensively, and the effluents are subjected to additional filtration.
- Accumulation and retention. In the last, fourth, effluent chamber comes cleaned by 75%. It is from here that they are brought to aeration fields or to a container where they will be stored until they are used as process water. To raise the level of discharge of purified water in the fourth compartment, you can install a drain pump with a float. The options for diverting treated wastewater depend on the hydrogeological features of the site.
The performance of the septic tank is designed for five people permanently residing in the house, and is 1.5 m3 of waste per day.
Models of the septic tank DKS
Making a review of DKS septic tanks, it is impossible not to talk about the model range. The manufacturer produces several varieties of such a device. Among them there are models for small country houses and for cottages with permanent residents.
On sale you can find:
- DKS 15. These products can easily cope with sewage from the life of 3-5 people. A septic tank can clean up to 450 liters of sewage per day. The volume of the device is 1.5 m3, and its weight is only 52 kg. The cost of such a septic tank is about 30,000 rubles.
- DKS 25 is used to treat wastewater up to 750 liters per day. There is enough power to serve a house with 5-7 permanent residents. The volume of all containers of the septic tank is 2.5 m3, and the weight is 72 kg. Such a device will cost the buyer 42-45 thousand rubles.

Both brands of septic tanks are supplied for installation in areas with deep groundwater. If the water is close to the surface, then you need to buy a device with the letter "M". Such products are additionally equipped with a fourth chamber. It makes the septic tank completely sealed and prevents groundwater from penetrating inside the tank, and of course, slightly increases its cost.

In addition, the manufacturer offers to purchase additional equipment for its products. These devices include:
- basin extension kit. If the septic tank is immersed in the ground to a great depth, then the shaft well that comes with the kit may not be enough;
- drainage pump, which is ideal for the device;
- drainage system consisting of pipes and nozzles;
- biological products (fall asleep in a septic tank before use).
By installing a DKS septic tank in a country house, you can forget about the unpleasant smell on the street and the many inconveniences associated with the lack of a centralized sewage system. If you have any questions related to the choice of a septic tank, then write comments to the article.
Selection principle
When choosing a septic tank, it is important to consider how close groundwater is to the soil surface. In areas with a low level of groundwater, septic tanks with gravity drainage can be installed.
For swampy areas, quicksand and areas with groundwater levels close to the surface, the Leader septic tank models with forced drainage are intended (they have the prefix “n” in the marking).
The power of the installation is selected based on the daily water consumption. On average, according to the norms of SNIP, approximately 0.2 cubic meters of water per day is consumed per person. This figure takes into account the presence in the house of a bath, toilet, sinks, washing machine. Actual water consumption can be less if used economically.
The manufacturer claims that in practice the Leader local treatment facilities are able to serve, depending on the capacity of the model, from 2 to 16 people. You can navigate when choosing a septic tank based on the data in the table.
Biological products for cleaning this system
In order for the processing of organic waste to occur most fully, the use of special biological preparations is required. Such preparations are loaded into the biofilter, where organic matter is decomposed. The use of biological products not only helps to increase the life of the septic tank, but the water after passing through the installation is cleaned much better.
It is not recommended to use chlorine and disinfectants in large quantities - this kills biologically active substances. If such an aggressive environment is present in wastewater, then the amount of the biological product should be increased. The drug works in the temperature range from +3 to +50 degrees Celsius.

The Kedr unit provides a sufficiently high quality of cleaning, while it is economical, easy to operate and maintain. This distinguishes this septic tank from analogues.
The main elements of a septic tank
A septic tank is a local treatment plant designed to equip a sewer system independent of the central networks.
The main tasks of the element are the temporary accumulation of wastewater and their subsequent filtration. Modern septic tanks have become an improved alternative to traditional pit latrines.
Understanding the device and mechanism of operation of a septic tank will facilitate the selection of a treatment plant and its installation.
Designs of different modifications have some common components. The treatment system is a sealed tank, which includes one or more compartments.
To prevent soil contamination, the volume of waste entering the pit should be within 1 cubic meter / day. However, in a house where there is a bath, toilet, sink and washing machine, this requirement is not feasible.
The chambers of the septic tank are separated by partitions. The movement of fluid between them is carried out through overflow pipes.
A drain pipe is connected to the first compartment from the internal sewerage of the house, and purified water is discharged from the last chamber into the ground or semi-purified water for soil purification.
Many models are equipped with a mechanical filter - sediment separation occurs without a chemical reaction and the addition of reagents.Effluent is filtered through sand, gravel or expanded clay (+)
The main components of all cleaning units are:
- Tanks for settling wastewater. Storage tanks are made of plastic, metal, concrete or brick. The most preferred models are made of fiberglass and polypropylene - the materials are resistant to abrasion and guarantee the tightness of the tank during the entire period of operation.
- Incoming and outgoing pipeline. Overflow pipes are installed at a slope, providing unhindered flow of liquid between the tanks.
- Service items. Revision wells and hatches. At least one well is installed on the outer route of the sewer pipeline. With an increase in the length of the branch more than 25 m, an additional revision is arranged.
- Ventilation system. Regardless of which bacteria (anaerobic or aerobic) are involved in the process of processing waste masses, air exchange is necessary for the normal functioning of microorganisms, removal of methane and maintaining the desired temperature.
The simplest local sewer ventilation scheme includes one riser at the beginning of the system, and the second at the extreme section of the septic tank. When arranging filtration fields, a ventilation riser is installed on each drainage pipe.
The ventilation system ensures the removal of gases formed as a result of the decomposition of organic matter. Natural air exchange is based on the difference in air pressure - the inlet is located 2-4 m below the exhaust (+)

The principle of operation of the treatment plant
The first chamber acts as a receiving compartment. All the dirty sewage coming from the house flows into it through PVC pipes.
All solid fractions settle to the bottom of the section and accumulate there in the form of sediment, while light fat molecules float up and form a fatty film on the surface. Drains that have undergone partial cleaning pass into the second compartment through a small vertical opening 10 cm wide.
When arranging the treatment system, the pipes are laid with a slight slope towards the treatment plant, and from it towards the soil post-treatment system.Such an installation provides a continuous supply of water to the tank from the house sewer.
In the second section only the primary treatment of sewage flows takes place. In this compartment, anaerobic bacteria living in an airless space come into play, which, in the course of their vital activity, partially clarify the incoming wastewater.
To activate the process of aerobic purification, special biological preparations with microorganisms are added to the third chamber. After clarification, water enters the third compartment through special 10 mm slotted partitions located at a distance of 80 cm from the bottom of the chamber.
The four chambers of the septic tank are completely autonomous and operate independently of each other, the liquid, flowing from one edema to another, is subjected to a higher level of purification
In the third chamber there is a removable biological filter, which is a plastic collector of a lattice design with a filter load. The grate ensures that only purified water enters the filter, retaining the remaining particles of activated sludge formed as a result of the work of aerobes.
With the help of a special filler of microorganisms, the water undergoes deep biological treatment and, completely purified, rushes to the next compartment.
The filtration process is completed in the fourth chamber, where the water is completely clarified and sent to the filter well, filtration field or trench. Purified water moves by gravity.If the filter system is located at a higher level, and water cannot enter there naturally, the level of discharge can be raised by equipping the compartment with any drain pump with a float.
Leader design and wastewater treatment technology
The entire wastewater treatment process takes place inside one building, which is divided into several sections. Liquid flows from one compartment to another with the help of airlifts (special tubes).
Section #1. Primary clarifier
This is the so-called chamber for receiving wastewater that comes from the house through sewer pipes. In it, the contents are fermented and separated into suspended particles and the liquid part. Large organics settle to the bottom, light ones float to the surface in the form of a crust. About ¼ of the entire septic tank is allocated to this chamber.
Section number 2. Bioreactor
The clarified effluents pass into the compartment of the anaerobic bioreactor, where they are “meeted” by colonies of bacteria that feed on similar contents. They process complex organic matter and decompose it into simple elements. Also in this compartment, those suspended particles that managed to slip out of the first compartment are retained.
Section 3. First aerotank
At the bottom of the third compartment there is an aerator (a device in the form of a perforated pipe through which oxygen is pumped into the chamber by a compressor). With its help, effluents are oxidized, they are further clarified and partially absorbed by bacteria. Colonies of microorganisms live in gravel, which is scattered along the bottom of the compartment.
Section 4. Secondary clarifier
This is a small intermediate link, with the help of which the clarified waters from the first aeration tank flow into the second one, and the sludge settles to the bottom and is discharged through the airlift back to section No. 1.
Section number 5.Secondary aeration tank
This is a more powerful aerotank, because its entire space is filled with colonies of artificial algae-bacteria. They are helped by oxygen coming from the aerator at the bottom of the chamber, and crushed limestone. Effluent in this compartment undergoes deep biological treatment, as a result of which phosphate compounds are neutralized, acidity is eliminated, and practically purified water flows into the last chamber.
Regardless of the volume of the septic tank, it must be periodically cleaned of solid silt, calling a sewer machine for pumping
Section number 6. Tertiary clarifier
In the last compartment, the final separation of the sludge takes place, which again returns through the airlift to section No. 1, and the liquid is withdrawn to the outside (by gravity or by force).
Thus, all the silt deposited in any of the compartments, the system outputs to the receiving chamber, from where it will have to be pumped out by a sewage machine (1-2 rubles per year). The purified liquid is sent to a sewer ditch or to a specially dug well, where it is filtered and goes into the ground.
Advantages and Disadvantages of a Leader
Septic Leader has the following advantages:
-
since the size of the equipment is small, it can be installed next to a residential building;
-
drains in the Leader are cleaned in 4 stages;
-
there is no need to purchase a biological additive for the post-treatment of sewage;
-
purified water can be drained into a drainage, cesspool, ditch;
-
easy to install, does not require concreting and fixing equipment;
-
the septic tank is silent, does not emit unpleasant odors;
-
it can be installed at any level of groundwater or any soil;
-
the functionality of the septic tank is not disturbed during power outages;
-
there is no need for post-treatment of effluents that have been treated by the Leader;
-
septic tank Leader cleans even fecal drains with toilet paper, substances without chlorine, sand, household liquid waste.
Despite such positive reviews about the septic tank, the equipment has significant drawbacks:
-
If there is no electricity for more than a day, the septic tank works worse, because the bacteria do not receive the oxygen they need to live.
-
The septic tank is designed for permanent use, and if you use it occasionally, it starts to emit unpleasant odors.
-
The station does not tolerate low temperatures: due to freezing, the aerators die, and therefore the equipment stops working.
-
The septic tank does not clean the drains from nitrates, which means that the outlet water cannot be used for domestic purposes or for watering the garden.
-
Salt, acidic and alkaline substances must not be drained into the installation, as they kill bacteria.
-
Excess drains, for the amount of which the septic tank is not designed, causes a fetid odor, which disappears after 2 weeks.
Operation and care

It happens that flushing is not enough and the filter needs to be replaced. Despite the fact that it is recommended to clean the tank from solid drains once every 2-3 years, cleaning should be carried out much more often. It depends on the degree of load on the septic tank and the number of residents in the house.
If such procedures are not carried out, then the degree of water purification will be several times lower, and the aeration zone will be polluted.
Now in many gardening stores there are specialized capsules with bacteria that accelerate and intensify the processes of wastewater decomposition. The use of such preparations significantly reduces the load on both the filters of the septic tank and on the ground where the drains are filtered.This means that the service life of the device is increased, and the likelihood of changing filters and cleaning the bottom of solid waste is reduced.
Specialist note: bacterial colonies from granules should be renewed, preferably in the spring, and besides, chemically saturated water (water with soap, chlorine, alcohol) requires a longer and more intensive cleaning, and therefore a larger number of bacteria.
Economy class septic tank manufacturer Kedr is the market leader among similar suppliers of wastewater treatment systems. It was he who managed to create a unique and non-volatile wastewater treatment plant.
Easy installation and working principle, affordable price and long service life, increase the demand for this device and make it the most rational option for solving problems with wastewater in the country and in a country house.
Watch the video in which the specialist explains how to choose the right septic tank for a private house:
Advantages and disadvantages of septic tanks
Depending on how the septic tank is arranged, the living conditions of the family are dramatically improved, and this will be the main advantage of such a treatment plant. In addition, it has many other advantages. Let's consider them in more detail:
- Long service life.
- There are no unpleasant odors in the local area.
- It is not required to frequently order a sewage truck.
- Significantly reduces the risk of soil contamination.
- Ease and reliability of installation. When they are installed, ready-made septic tanks "Termite storage" or "Tank" are also used - stations for the complete decomposition of waste.
