Sorting
Having got rid of the excess, you can restore the perfect order among the remaining things. There is no way to do without thoughtful sorting. There are many options how to do it right.
- By frequency of use. As close as possible, to make it more convenient to take, you need to put things that are worn all the time. And those that are rarely used should be placed away, deep into the closet.
- By color. All things that are the same or similar in color palette, as well as clothes that blend well with each other in color, can be folded in one pile or in a separate box.
- By material.The idea is as follows: wardrobe items made of thin, elegant fabrics are folded apart from products made of coarse, dense matter, knitted jumpers are separated from cambric and satin blouses and shirts.
- Small and big things. Storage of items that differ in size (socks or jackets, jewelry or bags) is conveniently organized using separate sections or shelves, small and large, respectively. These can be miniature drawers or bulky baskets.
- Fold or hang. Some wardrobe items are best stored on hangers (trousers, jackets, shirts, dresses) so that they do not wrinkle or lose their shape. Other things can be laid out simply in piles (t-shirts, T-shirts, underpants). Woolen sweaters or thin knitwear should not be hung up (so the products will not stretch or deform), and should also be carefully placed on top of each other.
- seasonal sorting. This method involves dividing clothes and shoes into groups, depending on which season they are more suitable for. In the reach zone, things that are relevant at the moment are laid out, and the rest are put away in the far corner. Then the stacks are simply swapped. Sometimes a seasonal wardrobe is removed from the closet (hidden in pantries or stored inside the sofa) to make room for other things. You can put excess clothes or shoes in a suitcase, basket and place on the mezzanine.
These are not all options for organizing things in the closet. You can maintain order by disassembling items by their belonging to different family members or by purpose (for walks, ceremonial exits, sports). Very often, sorting is carried out according to the type of clothing or footwear: trousers, skirts, dresses, shirts, sweaters, boots, shoes, sneakers are stored separately.You can distinguish between the upper and lower elements of the wardrobe.

wardrobe cleaning process
Before embarking on a competent organization of space, it is worth “sorting out the rubble”, having studied what is generally stored in the deep depths of the wardrobe. There are a few simple rules for this.
Work from scratch. Shifting clothes from place to place in a closet packed to the eyeballs makes absolutely no sense. Take everything out of the furniture, sort it out and sort it out. Only after this simple fraud, fold all the neat stacks back. We guarantee that you will definitely find things that you have already forgotten about.

Checking clothes for the season. Before putting your summer or winter clothes on standby, inspect them thoroughly. A button came off - sew it on, a stain appeared - wash it. Bring each thing to full combat readiness, so that if necessary, pull it out of the wardrobe, put it on and go on business. Agree, it will be annoying when in the first frosts you pull out a jacket, and the zipper is broken on it or a stain is planted on the sleeve.

You can not hang what is easier to fold or vice versa. Add up: items decorated with beaded embroidery, cashmere items, wardrobe items made of denim or any delicate fabrics. Hang up: trousers, dresses, shirts, skirts.

Minimalism in boxes. The disadvantage of storing things in boxes is the creation of a shaky structure that goes far to the ceiling. If seasonal clothes are stored in such containers, then this option is acceptable, but for everyday items, limit yourself to a couple of boxes.A large number of cardboard boxes will be inconvenient to remove and put back in place.

- Don't despair if you can't get it out once and for all. You need to develop a habit.
- Set up a sale. For every new thing, there are two old ones that should be disposed of long ago. Charitable foundations, orphanages, the needy - there are many places where your unnecessary ballast will do more good than lying in a wardrobe.
Useful tips for storing things in the closet
After the New Year holidays, when everything is repackaged in the closets due to the search for the right wardrobe item, it's time to put things in order there. It seems to many, well, what can you come up with so unusual in order to properly fold things in the closet? It turns out that many useful techniques have been developed that will help to compactly place them in cabinets.
First you need to get everything that is in cabinets, lockers, chest of drawers and put it into 4 piles:
- Needed.
- Have been idle for a long time.
- Throw away or give away.
- Doubtful.
Let the most necessary ones lie down for now, but those that are thrown away should be immediately put in a trash bag. Items to be donated must be distributed immediately. You will immediately see how much space is freed up for new acquisitions. And brand new little things are a good mood, joy and satisfaction.
The most difficult thing is to decide on those that are in doubt. Perhaps you find it difficult to tear them "from the heart"? Then review them again. If the dress is not enough, and you are on a diet and you are thinking of fitting into it, then let it lie down. And if not, you don’t need to think about it - give it to someone who fits and that’s it.
But there is one more piece of advice: those that are pitiful or in doubt, put them in a box and do not look into it for 6-7 months. Open in six months.Rest assured that half of the items in this box will go to waste.
After 3 months, do another cleaning. You'll be free of a couple more things. Thus, the "liberation" will be completely painless.
What to do with the ones you need? A closet, like a theater, begins with a hanger. Pick up the same hangers, then dresses, blouses, shirts will hang at the same height. A neat look will be provided.
Experts advise storing all things, from T-shirts and home dressing gowns, on hangers. So you can easily find what you need. Yes, and ironing every time you do not have to. Try it, it's very convenient!
If there are a lot of things, put them in boxes, signing on beautiful labels what lies here, for example: T-shirts, sweaters, etc. There will always be order on the shelves, and you won’t have to look for a long time, this is verified.
Layout of the interior space of the cabinet
To figure out how to arrange things in a closet, at the initial stage it is worth thinking about the effective organization of the internal space. In order for it to be organized conveniently and rationally, it is best to design the cabinet strictly for your needs. This means that you can safely get rid of areas that seem unnecessary.
It is important to know: if such a possibility exists, it is worth considering buying a cabinet or a custom-made modular system. Such a product will fully correspond to the things that will be stored in it.
If the owner is engaged in concert activities, and he has a lot of heavy fantasy costumes, it is worth ordering a wardrobe with a reinforced crossbar.

Take advantage of tips from experienced designers who know how to solve the problems of piled shelves:
- Get rid of old things. Make it a rule to do this regularly.If a piece of clothing has not been worn for more than a year, it is worth giving it to those in need, selling it or throwing it away. Once you do this, you will find a lot of free space;
- Zone the room correctly. This tip is relevant if you do not have a large wardrobe or closet. Do not store things on the backs of chairs, ironing boards, or in other locations not intended for clothing. It is better to allocate some space for the placement of shelving, horizontal hangers, shelves or special organizers there. If space allows, equip a drywall niche;
- Make sure you have access to shoe boxes. Many, wanting to know how to properly arrange things in the closet, try to hide their shoes as far as possible - for example, on the mezzanine or lower shelves. This is a mistake: shoes should be at hand so as not to complicate the search process. You can even sign each box;
- Buy the right hangers. Refuse models made of plastic and plastic - as a rule, they are voluminous and large-sized. The best option is small thin metal hangers, which are not only lightweight and take up little space, but also have a long service life and will not spoil clothes. And these hangers can withstand a significant load;
- Sorting. To conveniently and beautifully arrange things, sort them by color. This not only looks aesthetically pleasing, but will allow you to quickly find the right product.

Take care of additional convenience factors. For example, a good solution would be to integrate small LED lamps inside the cabinet.Interior lighting will significantly reduce problems when searching for a particular product. And in order to correctly arrange the clothes, look at the photos - they will help you get inspired and come to the optimal solution.
Basic rules for putting things in order in the closet
To clean up in a closet like a "compartment", a small wardrobe, they begin by taking everything out of it completely. In some places, dust often accumulates, which is removed with a damp microfiber cloth. It is desirable to maintain order constantly, allocating its own section to each group of homogeneous objects. If a clear concept has not yet been devised, the issue is decided "on the spot", based on what things are, how many there are. It is desirable that each family member have their own closet or a clearly separated section in the overall wardrobe design.
Competent shopping is also important - if you do not buy too much, then it is easier to keep order. A great idea is a “capsule wardrobe”, where things are immediately folded in sets of three to six pieces. In each "capsule" everything goes with everything, so there are no problems with the daily choice. To accurately buy exactly what you need, you need to take a picture of things that did not find a “pair”, and then try to find a suitable set for them.
Sorting clothes
The process of restoring order begins with the competent sorting of the contents of the closet. At this stage, you need to get rid of everything superfluous, leaving only what is actually worn, used for its intended purpose. To do this, everything is shaken out of the locker, to the last sock, divided into five main categories:
- good, favorite things - they fit perfectly on the figure, in such it is not a shame to "go out" or at least go to work;
- old, torn, with indelible stains, spools - this category is allowed on rags without regret. It is permissible, perhaps, to leave one jacket and one pants, in which it is supposed to dig a garden, paint a fence, etc .;
- relatively good, but ugly, unfashionable, too large or already small clothes - they are sold through local commissions, Internet groups, such as "I'll give it away";
- valuable, branded, expensive designer items, which for some reason cannot be worn. They can be sold for a lot of money;
- other things - this “pile” will include something with which it is not yet clear what to do. This is a skirt that can still be altered, creating an actual image with it, a coat that is planned to be repainted, etc. This category is folded into a package, it gets out in a maximum of three to four months. If nothing is decided during this time, the “heap” is sent to the trash or distributed to the poor.
The ideal option is if all the items that you decide to leave are divided into sets - shoes and trousers, a blouse and a scarf, a dress and a bolero, jeans and sneakers.
Regular "weeding" or revision
One of the main principles of the "smart wardrobe" is nothing more. An evening dress that has been “waiting for the right occasion” for five years now will be used for clothes for dolls, the year before last t-shirts, jeans, skirts, which you still dream of getting into sometime, it’s better to distribute to younger comrades, and shoes, boots, sandals, which have long been released out of fashion, without regret surrender to the nearest flea market for a symbolic sum. To save space, what has not been worn for more than a year (maximum - more than two years) must be urgently disposed of.A similar principle is followed by supporters of the Feng Shui philosophy, who believe that a person needs very little, and everything superfluous prevents the favorable flow of qi energy around the apartment, causing illness and various problems.
Tidying options
Chaos inside the closet appears when all things are folded at random, there is no specific system for placing clothes, shoes, accessories. Wardrobe items are gradually “moved” to chairs, armchairs, sofa backs, or simply lying around the house where they have to. In order to organize order, you need to assess the situation and choose the best way to arrange things.
Sometimes a complete disassembly of the cabinet, a general audit is required
This will take a lot of time, but the result is worth it.
In other cases, you just need to slightly adjust the stacks of things or slightly optimize the system for organizing wardrobe items.
Another way to put things in order in the closet is to carefully sort the contents (the criteria can be very different), which will help you quickly find the right thing.
It is also important to get rid of excess in time, not to store clothes and shoes if they are no longer needed. Everyone has things that have worn out, lost their original appearance, have become small or no longer like
It is necessary to conduct a careful selection: send something for repair, and give or throw away other products.

Rules for the location of clothes
Consider a few useful tricks for organizing space that will significantly expand the usable area.
- Skirts are best placed on the shoulders, and trousers - on the trousers (crossbar hangers). Before putting away the item, wash and iron it. So you save time on ironing and keep a presentable appearance of clothes.
- Tiered coat hangers with clothespins can accommodate more items than a regular coat hanger. This way you save more free space on the shelves. This design is easy to make yourself. To do this, take the lid of a can. We pass the lid through the hanger, the next one is threaded through the bottom hole of the lid - the home-made hangers are ready.
- Sweatshirts, sweaters are best placed folded on a shelf or rolled up; in a vertical state, such an element of the wardrobe will quickly stretch and become unusable. Before folding knitted woolen products, they must be aired, if possible in fresh air.
- Shirts, blouses, shirts. To avoid deformation, we recommend hanging this type of clothing on a hanger with soft shoulders.
- Underwear, socks should preferably be sorted by color and stored in baskets or drawers, rolled up. We do not recommend twisting “snails” out of socks: one sock will stretch and lose its appearance. For each pair, select a separate section. For this purpose, we recommend using an organizer for underwear and socks.
- Shops in a large assortment offer types of organizers (horizontal and vertical), which resemble boxes, divided into small sections. Vertical (hanging) organizers are used to save space by hanging from the inside of a cabinet or door. Also, if possible, attach a few hangers to the doors and hang bras on top. Thanks to this method, you can quickly select the desired model.
- Belts, ties, scarves, other accessories. These wardrobe items with excellent space savings will be located on the cabinet doors.For this method, a towel rack is suitable; several hooks can be placed on it. Such an organization will save not only space, but also the time of choosing an accessory. We advise you to put small items in small boxes or baskets, for this case, use shoeboxes.
- Shoes. Designate a special place for it or a separate locker. Leather shoes are best stored in boxes. To find the right pair of shoes later, distribute the shoes into boxes and stick photos or a sticker with a description on them, leave each pair with its original packaging or cut a small window on the side of the box and cover with foil. It is also convenient, given the frequency of use of each pair of shoes, to remove the boxes to the bottom of the closet. But this method only partially saves space. For the sake of greater visibility, we recommend using transparent plastic containers, where several pairs can be placed at once for a season.
- The trouser rack is great for storing tall boots. We fasten the shoes with clothespins and place them on a hanger. This design is usually located inside the bottom of the cabinet. Hang fabric pockets from the door, you can sew them yourself. Put slippers or sandals without a heel there.
- Bags. Store these wardrobe items on the top shelves in an upright position to avoid creases. To shape the bag, crumpled paper is placed inside. Clutches, small handbags can be hidden inside larger bags. To save more space, attach bag hooks to the back of the closet.
- Bed sheets. For convenience and easy orientation, it is recommended to organize storage by sets.Putting the duvet cover and sheet inside the pillowcase is easy! The perfect order on the shelves - easily!
How else can you save space in the closet: 4 best ideas
For fans of non-standard ways of organizing space, there are also other unusual options that will further save space in your closet. But we must not forget that effective cleaning involves following a sequence of actions. If you follow the points according to the KonMari method in combination with original cleaning methods, then you can forever forget about the mess in the dressing room.
double hanger

Rice. 16 - Multi-level hanger
There are no secrets in its creation. You just need to attach one hanger to another. To connect them together, you can use small hooks, rings, or even tabs from tin cans. The only disadvantage of this design is that in order to pull out a dress that hangs on the first level, you need to remove the second one. Yes, we waste time, but we save a lot of space.
hanger ladder
We use an old ladder as an additional cabinet. We mount it on a free wall. We turn it into a hanging shelf, with the help of which we organize space for storing things. We remove the boxes with shoes and accessories upstairs, and hang clothes on the steps. Perfect for a cottage or country house.
Pockets for socks and underwear
This is another way to streamline the "thing chaos". They are transparent cases in which it is convenient to store underwear with socks. Such special pockets can be bought at the store or sewn with your own hands if you have a free moment.
Using trouser hooks
This is how you hang your jeans.So you save space, and the thing will not wrinkle
But you need to use trouser hooks wisely: always pay attention to the type of fabric. If a thing tends to stretch or wrinkle, it is better to put it on a shelf or hang it on a regular hanger.
Storage Methods
To put things in order in the closet, you need to organize the space in it.
- The easiest way to find the right thing in the closet is when it is located on a hanger, and each on its own - this way the clothes wrinkle less. But such an organization is not always achievable. There are things that cannot be stored on hangers: knitwear, woolen sweaters and cardigans, bed linen, towels, etc.
- Casual wear, a variety of knitwear and sanitary items are perfectly stored on the shelves. The disadvantage of this method is the inconvenience when searching for the necessary thing.
- More convenient sliding shelves. But there is a caveat - you should not lay out small things (underwear, socks) on them, when the shelf is extended, they will fall one level lower.
Shoes on sliding shelves in the hallway closet
Dressing room in the hallwaySmall drawers for accessories in the hallway closet
Everyday things are best kept at eye level. What you wear less often can be stored on the lower shelves, and rarely used items can be placed on the very top.
- Drawers make it easy to store clothes. There it is hidden from prying eyes and does not gather dust. If you place a suitable multi-section organizer or divider in this compartment, the storage will become organized and the desired item will be easier to find. This method is appropriate for belts, scarves, ties and other accessories.
- There are sliding sections with divisions of 15 x 15 cm, when the box is divided into identical squares. They are good for jewelry, watches and small items.
- In a cabinet without drawers, several boxes, baskets or containers can be placed on deep shelves. The replacement will also be vertical organizers with transparent pockets attached to the inside of the cabinet doors. This method of placement is suitable for slippers or summer sandals.
- To avoid deformations, it is better to keep shoes in boxes. You can leave the "native" packaging, purchase the same cardboard or plastic boxes. However, this arrangement takes up a lot of space.
- In trunks with removable partitions, you can put several pairs of shoes at the same time or long boots. But stacking in such organizers is unlikely to succeed because of the not very strong walls.
Filling in the corner wardrobe

There should be ventilation holes in the shoe box so that the boots and shoes do not suffocate. For storage in boxes, take a moment to label them. You can take a picture of each pair, print a photo and stick it on the box.
The images on the boxes correspond to the shoes inside. You can identify a pair of shoes by the photo on the box
Step Four: Hang Everything on Hangers
Anything that can be hung on hangers should be hung on hangers. One item, one hanger. Hangers should be according to the size of the clothes. The heavier and denser the clothes, the more solid the hanger should be.
It is better to use wooden or plastic hangers, rather than thin wire ones (they ruin clothes). Fasten at least the top button - so the collar does not deform, and the thing will not cling when taken out.
If there is not enough space in the closet to hang everything, then there are such life hacks:
1) Use multi-level hangers. For example, for trousers:

For shirts and blouses:

You can also buy a clothes hanger (Ikea has suitable options). Such a stand is a replacement for a chair with clothes, where you throw everything out of habit. It is more roomy and less wrinkled.

Next to such a hanger, it is convenient to put a basket for dirty laundry in order to immediately throw there what will go into the wash. If you want to get rid of the habit of scattering clothes, then you must first designate one place where you can throw them.
Another useful tip is to understand what you wear and what you don't. Hang the hanger so that the hook looks in one direction, better as in the first picture: this way the clothes do not cling. And what you put on and hung back, hang as in the second picture.

After a couple of weeks, the hangers will hang randomly and you will see which ones you did not touch - therefore, you did not wear these clothes. It can be included in the revision of the wardrobe, put away in the closet or folded and sent to storage.
Accessories can also be hung on hangers:

Storage accessories
It will not work to organize compact storage of things with shelves and drawers alone. Additional accessories are used to save space. They simplify the process of restoring order, finding the right thing. How to compactly fold, store things in a closet on shelves, rods?
Hangers
It is impossible to compactly organize things in a wardrobe without hangers - coat hangers. The width is selected according to the size of the clothes.
Types of hangers:
- ordinary. Used for jackets, shirts, dresses. They are made of wood, plastic, metal. Modern models have clothespins for skirts, trousers. On one hanger, you can compactly place a suit of 3-5 things;
- ordinary hangers with foam rubber. Used for thin blouses, knitted and knitted items. Soft inserts prevent the formation of creases in the shoulder area.
- trouser. They have clips on the sides. There are multi-level designs for compact storage of 2-5 pairs of trousers;
- for belts. They are several strips with hooks or holes-holders. Used for belts, belts, ties.
- for scarves. It is a structure of many connected rings of the same or different diameters. 10-50 thin shawls, scarves are placed on one hanger.
It is multi-level hangers that help keep things compact in vertical cabinets. They maximize the space below without extraneous and additional devices.
Organizers
Organizers allow you to quickly fold things, determine the contents of the closet, store a large amount of clothes compactly, and create the perfect order.
Main types:
All organizers have a woven base, soft walls, various designs, patterns. Unnecessarily folded up to the thickness of the notebook. Things are stored compactly, safely. Partitions provide protection of accessories, prevent hooks.
It is necessary to periodically get rid of unnecessary things. They lie on the shelves for years, and in reality are not used.
Vacuum bags
Space saving find. Vacuum bags are used to store linens, seasonal clothes, pillows, blankets and other things that are temporarily not in use.
Pros:
- help save space
- things are protected from odors, moths, moisture;
- ease of storage;
- multiple use;
- different sizes.
Minuses:
- high price of high-quality plastic bags;
- clothes, linen are wrinkled;
- a filled package with curved things;
- you need a special pump or vacuum cleaner.
The bags are made of dense polyethylene, have a zip fastener, an air evacuation valve. The volume of a thing is reduced by 5-10 times. There are always instructions for use on the package, you can read it.
So that things do not wrinkle too much, you need to carefully straighten the clothes in the bag, fold them in flat ways.
Separators
Used to organize the storage of small items - socks, ties, tights, underwear. Dividers are inserted into drawers, boxes. They allow you to compactly fold, store long, narrow, complex items. There are sliding models for adjusting the size of the cells.
Other
It is not always possible to immediately buy beautiful organizers, high-quality hangers, vacuum bags. But this does not negate the organization of things in the closet.
What can be used:
- shoe boxes, household appliances;
- plastic baskets, containers;
- linen bags;
- plastic bags;
- mesh baskets.
Organization and planning is a whole science. There are dozens of ways to compactly fold clothes, bedding, underwear. It will take time to master, some effort. At the end, a reward awaits - always a neat closet, neat clothes, saving time on ironing, cleaning.
The best way to fold, suitable for most things, is a roll. For quick finding, compact storage, the Japanese vertical method can be recommended. If there are few drawers, you should look at folding with flat methods with a minimum number of creases. Well, do not forget about sorting by purpose, size.

Useful life hacks
You can come up with interesting ideas on how to put things in order in the closet and save it on your own, showing a little ingenuity. But there are also ready-made tips that will help turn routine work into an exciting activity.

- Self-made hanging storage systems with transparent film pockets will allow you to store socks, shorts, belts, scarves, hats, shoes, small items. Things will always be in sight, and getting them is very convenient.
- Boxes, containers, boxes can be marked with inscriptions, stickers, drawings to easily and quickly navigate through the abundance of stored items.
- To store scarves, scarves, you can use a regular hanger, on which plastic detachable rings are strung.
- Things that make up the top of the wardrobe can be stored on the upper shelves, products for the "bottom", respectively, are located at the bottom of the cabinet.

- It is better to fold clothes vertically, folding them into neat rectangles or rolling them into tubes, so it is more convenient to find and get things. This little trick will save space in your closet.
After the analysis and organization of the contents of the closet is over, one thing remains - to try to stick to the created system, because it is much easier to maintain order than to restore it from scratch each time.

How to arrange things in a small closet when there is absolutely no space
When the closet is very small, there are difficulties with the placement of the wardrobe in this volume. In addition, you need to get at least a semblance of order. Consider:
- If there is a place (for example, a garage, attic, chest or mezzanine) where you can put away some of the things for long-term storage, then you should remove all seasonal items from the wardrobe immediately after the end of a particular season.
- If there is no extra space, it is more practical to put seasonal items in the closet so that they do not block items that need free access.
- Adjustable or fixed shelves can be added to make better use of the available space. When needs change, they can simply be replaced or removed.
- Use baskets, containers or drawers. In small containers it is worth decomposing all small items and keeping them on the shelves at hand.
Small built-in wardrobe for children's thingsThe most popular storage method in a tight closet is drawersSmall compartments in a closet fit a narrow closet
When choosing wicker products, it is better to give preference to specimens with a fabric lining. It will protect things from unwanted damage (hooks and holes).
- If there is free space above the door inside the closet, you can attach hooks or hangers and hang bags or rarely used items on them.
-
If there is room on the inside of the door, add some hooks and small baskets to it. This way you can store not very large items, for example: scarves, hats, belts, scarves and gloves.
- A shoe rack placed in a closet will help you use space efficiently and keep your shoes in order.
- Attach an extra hanger bar midway between the bottom and the existing rod. This will fill the space not occupied by any containers.
- Store jewelry, sunglasses, and other small accessories on a perforated plate attached to one of the cabinet walls.
- If there is not enough space for baskets or other containers, you can hang bags from above (for example, on hangers) and put other items in them. Store one type of item in each.
-
Vacuum bags reduce the amount of empty air space an item takes up. You should place the folded thing in a bag and use a vacuum hose from a conventional vacuum cleaner to draw air out of the bag.
- Use tiered hangers that can store more than one item on each hook. This frees up some vertical space. Or hang the chain on the crossbar in the closet and insert hanger hooks into its links.

Make multi-tiered hangers with your own hands. Put the ear of a soda can on the hook of a regular one and attach another hanger through the second slot in the ear. In stores, you can also buy ready-made hanging shelves made of plastic, aluminum or stainless steel.
