How to choose fabric
Roller blind fabric should be:
- dust repellent;
- water-repellent;
- antibacterial;
- opaque (or reflective).
Roller blinds - "shop" option
The fabric acquires these qualities after using a special impregnation.
The color and pattern on the fabric should be matched to the interior of the room. You can use a plain fabric that contrasts in color with the wallpaper in the room, then the roller blind will serve as an interesting color accent. Preferring a translucent fabric with ruffles, you will create the illusion of stained glass windows.
Advice. If the windows face south, then cold-colored curtains (blue, green, purple) will help create a cool environment.Northern rooms will be warmer with orange, red and yellow shades of roller blinds.
How can you decorate
If making homemade blinds is difficult the first time, start by decorating standard mass production models. Boring white plates can be “dressed” with a film, wallpaper with any picture.
Action plan:
- Choose a color, pattern, texture of wallpaper or self-adhesive film that fits into the design project.
- Measure plastic flats, mark the material chosen for decoration.
- Cut the paper or self-adhesive so that the geometry of the pattern is preserved.
- Stick the blanks on the main structure.
- Wipe off excess glue, trim protruding corners.
Choose products with a moisture-resistant coating so that the glued elements do not peel off during wet cleaning.
Taking measurements for a window

preparation and measurements.
The roller blind can be installed:
- inside the window opening;
- outside the opening;
- for each frame.
Based on the installation option, measurements of width and height are made. Glass width including side glazing beads (elements that hold the glass in the frame) plus 1 mm on each side. When measuring the window, you need to make sure that after installation, the auxiliary mechanisms will not rest against slopes or hinges.
Height is measured from top to bottom. If the glazing beads are rounded, then the height must be measured so that the curtain overlaps the frame border by 2-5 mm. If the frame is deaf, then 0.5 mm must be added to the measurements, in the case of an opening transom, 5-7 mm are added to the length.
The width of the window can vary, so you need to measure it in several places.
Features of the assembly of drapery with decor
The roller blind can be decorated with a curly cut along the bottom of the canvas.
Curtains with a decorative shape are sewn in the same way as simple ones, but the weighting bar is located above the curly element, the drawstring is placed immediately after it
The curtains are cut out, as in the first case, but for decorating, another 25 cm is added to the length. To cut the curly edge, you need to prepare a paper template. If the canvas is double, then the fabric is folded with the front side of each other and chopped off.
The template is applied to the bottom edge of the curtain and outlined in chalk. Curtains are ground according to the applied pattern, side seams are sewn up. The curtain is turned inside out on the right side, the seams are ironed. The upper edge is tucked inward, fixed with an iron and a line is laid.
Next, you need to stitch the drawstring on the side that will be facing the glass. To do this, you need to prepare in advance a piece of material equal to the width of the curtain. The width of the segment should be such that the weighting agent enters, plus a hem at the seams.
First you need to process the side sections, and then attach it face down, stitch. Then you need to attach a weighting agent, wrap the drawstring around it, mark where the second seam will pass, remove the weighting agent. Pin the second edge of the drawstring to the curtain with pins and stitch it.
Types of mechanisms and mounting options for roller blinds
The main element of any roller shutters is a round rod that gathers the curtain into a roll, as well as a decorative chain or cord, the tension of which sets the roller in motion.

This mount is a bit like a blinds control system and has proven itself well.
A weighting agent is used to hold the fabric in a straightened state, and garters and other decorative elements are used to maintain the folded position.
Despite the same principle of operation of all roller shutters, their designs can be equipped with various elements designed to improve the appearance of the product and provide more comfortable operation:
- magnetic or guide tapes are a practical addition that eliminates the occurrence of distortions and gaps during the operation of curtains;
- a closed box that hides the roller - in addition to the aesthetic function, it also performs a protective one, protecting textiles from dust accumulation and various kinds of damage.

Roller blinds with a closed box are called cassette
Table: features of lifting mechanisms for roller blinds
| Movement type | The principle of roller shutter adjustment | pros | Minuses |
| Chain | The tension of a cord, rope or chain thrown over the drum and attached to the bottom of the canvas. When the chain is pulled, the roller starts to move, straightening or winding the curtain. To hold the canvas in a fixed position, special holders are used - garters, clips, etc. | Despite the simplicity of the mechanism, such a system is considered the most reliable and durable. | — |
| spring | The system is installed at the bottom or top of the leaf and closes quickly when the spring is extended. The fixation of the material is carried out automatically and does not require additional manipulations with the holders. | Rapid wear of the springs and the need for frequent replacement | It can be installed both at the top and at the bottom of the window opening. |
| Electric drive | The canvas is rolled up due to the operation of the electric motor, which can be started both with the help of the switch button and remotely. This system is especially relevant for high and large openings, as well as roof and ceiling windows. | The easiest system to use | The most difficult to work and expensive. |
The simplest mechanism for roller blinds can be made independently, using a round block of wood or a metal rod to create a roller, and supplementing it with a cord and mounting hardware. However, if you want to get a more functional product, it is recommended to purchase a ready-made system and attach the canvas you like to it.
Material selection
To calculate the required amount of material, the opening of a plastic window or the size of glass in a wooden frame is measured. Based on the obtained dimensions, the required amount of fabric is determined:
- the length of the canvas is the height of the glass or opening plus 5–15 cm;
- the width of the curtain should be equal to the width of the glass or opening, plus 2 to 4 cm for allowances.
You need 2 such canvases - for the front and back sides of the product. The curtain can be sewn from a material with the same or different pattern.
Choose fabric for roller blinds carefully. It is desirable that it be:
- reflective or opaque;
- antibacterial;
- water-repellent;
- dust repellent.
Such properties have fabrics treated with special impregnations.
To make the ceilings visually higher, you should choose a material with a vertical pattern. A canvas with a transverse pattern will visually increase the width of the room.
Alternatives suitable for a balcony
Do-it-yourself roller blinds are a simple option that is ideal for balconies and loggias, but it is not the only one. If we consider other applicants, then there will be a whole "heap" of potential "clothes". You can add to the list:

- universal classic blinds;
- their vertical variety;
- curtains made of bamboo beads;
- ordinary straight curtains;
- Roman curtains;
- duet: curtains, tulle;
- thread products;
- pleated curtains.
The small footage of the balcony is a sufficient reason to abandon lambrequins and thick curtains. In such rooms, concise and simple models will look better. The best representative is ordinary blinds: made of aluminum, wood, plastic or polyester. Space, on the contrary, significantly expands the potential range.
It is very easy to make the most elementary roller blinds with your own hands. You just need to be able to sew neatly and handle “for you” with fairly simple tools. Such work will not take much time, but will bring tangible benefits when compared with homemade curtains with purchased designs.
To find out what "front of work" lies ahead, you need to get acquainted with the process in advance. One of the most practical options for making curtains can be evaluated and “try on for yourself” if you watch this video:
DIY Roman blinds
Cutting and sewing in this case differ little. The main difference is the formation of folds. You can make the folds soft by simply stitching them, you can make "pockets" for the slats. The second option provides greater ease of use and uniformity of folds.
Below is a diagram of sewing and forming folds with "pockets" for reinforcing strips.
When calculating the length of the cord in this sewing option, the main thing is to remember the difference for each of the two / three fragments. It is convenient to spread the curtain on the floor in a straightened form, estimate the position of the future wall cord holder and measure the required amount.
Important: rings for Roman blinds should be 3 to 10 times the diameter of the cord.Smooth, joint-free rings - the key to easy cord pulling and ease of opening and closing curtains
Roller blind care
Roller blinds made with your own hands will perform their functions for many years, if they are properly looked after. Care instructions depend on the chosen material from which the canvas is made.
Any fabric should be dusted regularly. To do this, you can use a vacuum cleaner with a special nozzle. In the absence of such a nozzle, you can use an elastic band to fix a piece of soft cloth on the vacuum cleaner. This design will not damage the surface of the canvas, at the same time remove dust from it qualitatively.
Sooner or later, spots will appear on the curtains. If the stain cannot be removed with a sponge dampened with water, neutral detergents without bleach should be used. In this case, it is recommended to adhere to the following rules:
- Dissolve the detergent in warm water so that there are no grains.
- Gently apply the soapy solution to the fabric in a circular motion.
- So that there are no streaks left on the curtains, they are thoroughly rinsed under running water.
- The canvas is dried only in a vertical position and straightened. In this case, the fabric will not deform or stretch.
- A fabric that is heavily wrinkled during washing can be gently stroked with the tip of an iron through damp gauze or a cloth.
Roller blinds impregnated with special compositions cannot be washed in a washing machine. A household appliance can stretch it, crumple it, or even tear it.
Curtains made from wallpaper should not be washed with water.To clean them, you can use a gentle stain remover or special pastes intended for paper sheets.
It is recommended to wear rubber gloves before using any cleaning products.
Roller blinds are the best solution for windows in the kitchen, nursery, loggia and balcony. They guarantee the attractiveness of the window opening, both open and rolled up. And their manufacture and installation with their own hands is not particularly difficult.
Installation of roller blinds
Fixing the roller curtain takes no more than 15 minutes
Installation of a roller curtain can be carried out in three ways:
- on the wall above the window;
- on the ceiling;
- on the frame.
The installation method should be chosen depending on the style of the room, the ability to open or close the window, remove the curtains for washing.
You can mount the mount yourself in just 10-15 minutes.
Mounting the lifting mechanism on a plastic window consists of the following steps:
- The surface of the window frame must be degreased in advance with a special agent or solvent.
- Double-sided tape should be heated with a hair dryer, remove the protective film and attach on top of the window frame.
- The upper part of the roller blind must be fixed to the adhesive tape, after removing the second protective layer from it.
And also the curtain can be attached to a wooden or metal bracket. This will require more time, special tools and materials.
Making roller blinds from wallpaper or fabric is not so difficult and even beginner needlewomen can do it. If you approach the process with responsibility, you will end up with inexpensive, interesting and original curtains that will become a real decoration of the interior.
Measurements with installation in front of the opening
If your window is best suited for installation on the wall in front of the opening, then you have more opportunities to choose the height and width of the curtain according to your own needs. You can choose blinds that cover only the outline of the window, or you can purchase a model that will hide part of the wall around. This type of installation is often used to install Blackout type products, which provide the most protection from sunlight. Read more: Features of choosing Blackout Blackout roller blinds
For standard sizes of roller blinds, the following calculation formula is applicable:
- Width = opening width + 10 cm.
- Length = opening height + 15 cm.
It should be remembered that the height of the product is measured from the place where the curtains are attached to the window sill or lower, if necessary. The width is also selected taking into account the desired overlap on both sides of the window opening.
The cord for controlling the lifting mechanism in this case can be located on either side of the curtain as it suits you - on the left or right. Read in detail: About all roller blind mechanisms
How to hang
This type of Mini is installed on the sash window:
Having attached the brackets to the frame, they are screwed into the mounting holes with two self-tapping screws. Next, inserting the latches with gears into the pipe with the canvas, insert it into the standard bracket. It is enough to slightly press on the pipe, as the latches with gears will go inside, and a click should be heard. At the end, bracket covers are installed as a decorative element of the structure. Read more: About mounting roller blinds on brackets
Installation is carried out only on the opening sash of the frame.Hinged plastic spring brackets are snapped into standard ones and repeat the same steps as in the method of mounting with self-tapping screws.
In the case of metal hinged brackets, the only difference is the process of their connection with the standard ones - the petals of the hinged brackets are pre-bent when connected;
Attachment attachments are snapped onto the brackets. Degrease the sections of the window profile where the product will be glued, heat the adhesive tape with a hairdryer. Remove the protective film from it and, pressing firmly, glue it to the surface. The rest of the steps are the same as the standard ones. Read more: How to hang curtains on windows without drilling
It must be remembered that, regardless of the chosen method of fastening, the uncovered section of the chain mechanism must look down.
Roll-cassette types
Today, the most popular options are with a box and guides of the Uni and Rollite systems. The box and guides are made of aluminium. In both designs, strips of double-sided tape are provided on the side rails, with the help of which the rails are glued to the window sash.
Rollite types can be mounted on plastic windows with the smallest glass depth of 6 mm. At the same time, the side guides are equipped with thick double-sided tape.
with U-shaped guides
If Uni systems are mounted on PVC windows with slightly recessed glass (less than 14 mm), then they use a modified version of Uni 2, which has U-shaped side rails and is equipped with special linings for the box, moving the panel away from the glass.
Cassettes are controlled by one chain. With its help, you can raise or lower and fix the curtain canvas at the required height.Protects the chain from sagging with a special lock mounted on the frame. It holds the chain when opening the window for ventilation.
How to measure cassette roller blinds
For the correct installation of this system, a competently and accurately measured window structure is required.
If the glazing beads are straight, then:
- the width is equal to the width of the glass, that is, the distance between the vertical glazing beads;
- the height is equal to the height of the glass, that is, the distance between the horizontal glazing beads.
If the glazing beads are beveled, then:
- the largest distance between them is taken as the width.
- Measurements are carried out with an accuracy of 1 mm.
Each kit includes detailed installation instructions for roller blinds (with pictures).
Making stained glass models
To create them, you can use any material, even tulle. The peculiarity of the appearance is that they resemble an hourglass. The canvas with a transverse belt can be assembled at any level. The essence of assembling a stained glass curtain with your own hands is to install the upper and lower guides and stretch the canvas between them. As guides, you can use wooden planks, metal tubes, a string or a thick fishing line.
The choice of material tension option affects the removal of vertical and horizontal dimensions:
- Having measured the distance between the upper and lower holder, you need to add another 20 cm. If the fabric is stretchy, then the allowance must be reduced.
- In order not to be mistaken, you can make an upper pocket and immediately put it on the bar. Then pull to the bottom crossbar, intercept with the backstage and mark the length.
- If everything suits, flash the bottom and put on the holders.
- The width depends on the type of material and the desired splendor. Therefore, either 1.5 opening sizes are taken, or double the size, while adding a couple of centimeters on each side.
You can still use the patchwork method, but first you need to choose a stained glass pattern. Sewing a simple mosaic version of the curtains begins with sewing together a patchwork fabric from multi-colored stripes. Then the finished canvas is cut at an angle of 45 degrees into strips. The connection of the resulting bands is sewn with an offset of the selected number of rhombuses. This method can give any pattern, and the fabric is exclusive.
practical roman blinds
The balcony should be made cozy so that it harmonizes with the room from where there is access to it. In addition, an additional comfortable corner in the house does not hurt. Create the necessary atmosphere will help stitched Roman curtains for the balcony with your own hands. To make them, you will need a little care, accuracy and precise implementation of all recommendations. It will help to sew curtains on the balcony with your own hands a master class, small, but detailed enough to get the desired result.
- It is necessary to measure all the sashes of the balcony window.
- Buy two types of fabric in size, not forgetting about the allowance for edge processing, which is 2 centimeters each.
- Calculate folds. 4-6 pieces are usually made for a low opening, smaller folds look ridiculous, and wide ones look cumbersome.
- Rings are purchased by the number of folds - it is more convenient to use 2, and preferably 3 rings for one fold, depending on the width of the curtain.
- Wooden or plastic weighting slats for folds (although a Roman blind can also have a free drapery).
- Cornice-mount, where you need to screw two or three special loops.
Roman blinds are sewn as follows:
- two panels, one of which is front, are folded inside out and stitched along the contour. Places where weighting agents will be inserted must be left unstitched;
- cut the corners of the fabric close to the line so that there are no creases and the fabric lies flat;
- turn the curtain on the front side, iron;
- insert all weights;
- sew holes;
- from the wrong side, mark and manually sew on the rings for the braid;
- on the lower rings, tie or firmly sew three pieces of cord, pass the cords through all the rings in height;
- pass the cords through the rings on the eaves;
- connect the cords into a single whole with the help of a weighting agent - a large bead;
- fasten the cornice with the Roman shade in place.

Finally
Summarize. For independent installation in the economy version, it is best to purchase mini luxury roller blinds or similar ones with a rigid upper eaves (mounting profile). Such curtains are also produced for fastening "2 in 1", i.e. or self-tapping screws with drilling, or tape without it, as well as closed ones.
“Aiming” for more expensive, but also much more durable closed roller blinds, you must definitely examine your windows and find out which version you need - Uni-1 or Uni-2. Purchased roller blinds are all with a top roller; their options for installation on the window frame are 100% guaranteed against peeping from the outside. Cassette roller blinds, the most expensive, do not need to be rolled up to open or close the window, and on the balcony with them you can install a ceiling-mounted clothes dryer without any problems.
Home-made roller blinds, contrary to popular belief, can be done without complex work with the upper shaft, but they can still be placed only in front of a window or in its opening between the slopes; not on the window frame. The design possibilities of roller blinds of all kinds are much wider than is commonly thought.
