Do-it-yourself Termex water heater repair: how to do it right?

Answers to frequently asked questions about the Termex water heater buttons

All storage water heaters (boilers) work on the same principle, and have a similar device.

This is how the wiring diagram of the most common Termex electric water heater with mechanical control looks like:

Repair of Termex water heaters on your own

As can be seen from the diagram, there is nothing complicated in the device device.

  1. The operation of two heating elements is regulated by a simple control panel, on which there are devices for monitoring and controlling heating.
  2. Thermostats installed inside the flask allow you to smoothly adjust the temperature in the range from +7 to +75 degrees.
  3. When the water in the storage tank cools down, the heating elements turn on again.

What to do if the Termex water heater does not turn on?

First you need to establish the cause of the problem. As practice shows, there may be several of them.

Here are the most common:

  • The socket is faulty, there is no voltage in the 220 V network. To check this, it is enough to connect any other working electrical device to the socket;
  • The integrity of the power wires is broken, there is no contact at the terminals of the heating element;
  • The on/off button itself failed. In this case, replacing the ON / OFF buttons on the water heater will help solve the problem;
  • The water heater thermal protection button has tripped, opening the electrical circuit. Thermal protection prevents overheating of water if for some reason the thermostat does not work. To start the boiler, you need to press the hidden thermal protection button. It is located directly on the thermostat block;
  • The residual current device (RCD) has tripped. With a single operation of the RCD, you can reset the emergency shutdown button of the water heater by pressing the red switch located on the device itself. If a repeated shutdown occurs, this indicates the presence of serious defects and the need for repair of the electrical appliance.

In rare cases, the problem may be a malfunction of the RCD itself. However, more often protection is triggered when the integrity of the heating elements is violated.

You can check the performance of the heating elements using a tester (measuring resistance). A damaged heating element cannot be repaired, but you can always purchase a new heating element and replace it.

Thermex® water heater device.

In fact, this is just a metal thermos with heating elements and "brains" that are connected to plumbing and electricity. Look for more information on the Internet.

Hi all! This article will teach you to beware of service centers and possibly repair and prevent water heaters. Six months ago, my relatives during the operation of a vertical flat electric water heater from Thermex, with a volume of 80 liters, the built-in RCD tripped.

All pictures can be enlarged for viewing by simply clicking on them.

Once the RCD is triggered, it means that there is a leakage current. Something, somewhere, hit the “case” of the device.

Without hesitation, a relative takes this water heater to a certified Morozych service center, which is located in the building of the KSK ZMMK on the street. Etc. Builders, Ulan-Ude, for repairs. The repair was carried out in a short time. According to the issued receipt, it turned out that the heating element with a power of 1300 W was replaced. The cost of spare parts and labor amounted to 3000 rubles, a guarantee of 3 months.

Everything seems to be fine, everything is connected, everything works, but six months have passed and again the same problem. Now they asked me to look.

Relief valve disassembly

The safety valve is an important thing in the operation of the water heater. This valve helps the water heater not explode. It regulates the pressure inside, so you need to install it correctly so that when turned on, the boiler does not explode and starts working correctly, that is, it heats the water, and not just drives it through itself.

Each boiler has its own individual valve, so a specialist should choose it.

The safety valve is similar to a simple part of a pipe with a small handle, with which the pressure inside the boiler will be regulated. The valve can be easily removed and installed back, but this must be done correctly to avoid breakage and other unpleasant situations.

The oldest concern for the production of hot water equipment for home use has been supplying its products to the country since 1995. It meets all international and Russian standards. The Termex brand also includes Champion, Quadro, Blitz devices. That is, their device is identical to the main brand. The Termex water heating equipment uses only electrical elements as a heater, wet and closed. The product line includes;

  • storage devices of various capacities;
  • flow devices;
  • combined, flow-accumulative systems.

Timely cleaning and replacement of the anode will extend the life of the main element.

Regardless of the principle of accumulation and supply of water, the devices have common functional units that become unusable over time, and the Termex water heater needs to be repaired:

  1. A storage tank consisting of a shell, an inner tank and a heat-insulating layer between them. The inner vessel is made of galvanized steel or has an enamel coating. Outer shell made of plastic or powder-coated metal.
  2. Heating complex in the form of one or two open elements and an anode for each of them. The electrodes are mounted with fastening on one platform, which is removed from the outside by unscrewing the fasteners.
  3. Process control equipment - temperature sensor, thermostats, electronic control systems, safety valve.
  4. Mounting gaskets, branch pipes, taps and valves for connecting the device to the system.
  5. Wiring with fuses, shield, and network arrangement, RCD and ground loop.

All internal storage tanks can be either enameled or galvanized. All of them have a magnesium anode paired with a heating element.

Flow systems use a dry element in a copper sheath, they do not accept scale, but are destroyed if there are aluminum parts in the liner. Water passing through an aluminum radiator carries ions that will destroy the copper body of the heater.

Help from a specialist

There are breakdowns in which Thermex cannot be repaired on its own, it is necessary to call a specialist from the service center. Such situations include the following:

  1. If the water heater is still under warranty then the original sticker must be kept or the free repair will be denied.
  2. It happens that the emergency shutdown of the device works on new boilers. This often happens with small-capacity heaters. If this happens, then you do not need to put it on maximum water heating. You should immediately call a specialist from the service.
  3. Sometimes all the settings in the thermostat fail. If there is a sudden power outage, then the program may be reset from the electronic elements. Only the master should restart it.

Inexpensive boilers with a small volume are in constant demand.They are purchased not only for country houses, but also for city apartments. The standard cost of maintenance by the master is approximately 30% of the price of the water heater itself.

The water heater does not work: causes of malfunctions

If the water heater does not turn on, turns off, makes noise when heated, starts to leak, heats water poorly or stops heating completely, then important components of the device have suffered during operation. To fix the breakdowns with your own hands, you need to correctly identify them. Why won't the boiler turn on?

Consider the most common malfunctions of electric water heaters and their causes:

  1. Problems with the power supply of the device. If the indicator lamp for the boiler operation is off, you need to check the connection of the device to the network. In order to find a breakdown, you will need to inspect both the cable and the socket for visual damage, ring the indicator and cable, and measure the voltage in the socket with a multimeter.
  2. Heating element failure. Most often, the heating element fails due to the formation of scale on their surfaces (often found in boilers from Elenberg and Atlantic), turning on the boiler with a small water pressure, improper connection of the device. You can check the health of the heating element with a multimeter.
  3. Pressure sensor failure. A rubber membrane is often used as such a sensor (for example, in boilers from Polaris and Atmor). During prolonged use in harsh conditions, it may deform and act incorrectly on the microprocessor. You can identify the breakdown by examining the membrane.
  4. Thermal sensor malfunction. If the temperature sensor does not work, then the heating element will not be able to heat the water.You can check the temperature sensor for serviceability by measuring its resistance with a multimeter.
  5. Burnout of contacts, sticking of buttons, time relay contacts. Finding damaged items will not be easy. Therefore, before looking for malfunctions in the electrician, it is necessary to exclude the above breakdowns.

In addition, the water heater may not work properly due to poor water pressure. This may be due to both the quality of the water supply in your home and the clogging of the pipeline.

If the pressure in the water supply is less, then for the correct operation of the water heating devices, you will have to install a circular pump. At the same time, some modern models (for example, from Oasis and Garanterm) cannot work with pressure in the pipeline exceeding 6 bar.

Instructions for installing and connecting the device

Installation and connection of the water heater must be carried out only by a qualified specialist, otherwise it may malfunction and cause physical and property damage to health.

Placement and installation of the water heater

It is important that the location of the water heater is close to the place where hot water is used, this will help reduce heat loss when passing through the pipes. The water heater is mounted on pre-hammered anchors to a special housing bracket

The water heater is mounted on pre-hammered anchors to a special housing bracket.

In the room where the installation of the Termex water heater is planned, there must be waterproofing of the floor and access to the sewer. It is not allowed to place electrical appliances and objects that are “afraid of water” under the operating device.If these conditions cannot be met, it is necessary to at least install a special protective tray with access to the sewerage system. There is no protective tray in Termex kits with a tank capacity of 15, 30, 50 and 80 liters.

Electrical connection

Before connecting the water heater to the mains, it must be completely filled with water.

The appliance comes with a standard cord and plug for connecting to the mains. Without fail, the socket must be modern (with a ground terminal) and located in a zone protected from moisture. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the maximum allowable power for the socket and cord, which must be more than two thousand watts, otherwise the wire or socket may overheat and a fire hazard situation will arise.

What to do first

First of all, when the boiler drips, you must immediately disconnect it from the electrical network. Then do a visual inspection to determine exactly where the water is leaking from. If the product is leaking from the side or from above, it means that a hole has formed in the case.

If water seeps from below, then this indicates that, at best, it requires replacement of the magnesium rod and cleaning of the heating element, which is clogged with lime deposits, but the final diagnosis can only be made at an “opening”. If the water heater leaks, and water seeps out from under the plugs, and its smudges go through the water inlet and outlet hoses, then it is urgent to change the heating element and check the tightness of the connections. Regardless of why the water heater is leaking, it must be dismantled - drained, removed from the mounts and disassembled to find out the reasons.Any home master can handle this work, but to make an accurate diagnosis of what exactly failed, what is the cause of the leak - this can only be established by a professional.

Before starting all work, while the water is draining from the water heater, it is necessary to prepare the tool necessary for dismantling:

  • a medium-sized adjustable wrench so that you can unscrew the largest nut on the product;
  • special tester or multimeter;
  • screwdriver and knife;
  • a set of tubular keys;
  • a rubber hose for draining water is already in operation.

Filling with water and checking the functionality

At the same time, make sure that there are no leaks anywhere. As soon as water comes out of the “hot” tap, the boiler is filled. It is not necessary to immediately close the tap, let all the “slurry” spill and finally flush the tank and pipes. Repair of Termex water heaters on your own

Only when clean water comes out, turn off the mixer.

After that, the water heater must stand for at least half an hour or an hour so that the condensate leaves all surfaces and there is confidence in the absence of leaks. Repair of Termex water heaters on your own

You can then apply voltage by plugging the titanium into a power outlet. To check the operation of the thermostat, use the regulator knob to forcibly unscrew the adjustment to the maximum and minimum.

In this case, the on-off switch of the boiler should work.

If the boiler works quietly, without making any sounds, and it is not clear to you whether it is warming up or not, you can check the electricity consumption on the meter.

At the maximum heating power of the heater, the counter will spin or blink much faster.And this means that the heaters work as they should. All repairs with the purchase of spare parts will cost you around 1500-2000 rubles. In any workshop with a call to a plumber at home, they will ask for at least 3000-5000 rubles for such work, and this is without taking into account materials.

So self-repair can save you a significant amount of money, the main thing is not to make some mistakes.

Device

For effective troubleshooting, it will be useful to first get acquainted with the design of Termex boilers. The following components can be distinguished in the design:

Temperature sensor. With it, the owner can at any time find out what temperature the coolant has in the tank. Often it is made in the form of a scale with an arrow or a digital indicator. This device makes the operation of the boiler more convenient. Even if this sensor fails, it will not affect the operation of the device itself. True, in this case, the user will no longer be able to know to what temperature the water will heat up.

Thermal insulation. Its presence allows for a long time to keep the heated water. This element will never break.
Hose for draining hot water. It refers to those elements that usually do not cause problems for the owner.
The outer shell of the water heater body. This part can be made of different materials - metal, plastic or a combination of both. The integrity of the outer shell of the case can be violated only if the device accidentally falls or the owner himself incurs damage to it.

Internal tank. It is usually made from stainless steel. Due to its small thickness, it can easily be affected by corrosion, which can also cause its failure.But if regular maintenance is provided, then for a long time it will not create problems for the owner.
TEN. This element plays a decisive role in the operation of the device, since it heats the liquid. Moreover, more powerful models require less time to heat water. In view of the fact that it is constantly in use and exposed to corrosion, it is with it that the most frequent failures of water heaters are associated.
magnesium anode. A place is allocated for it near the heating element. Its main purpose is to protect the tank and heating element from corrosion.

It is very important to monitor its condition and, if necessary, change it to a new one.
Hose for supplying cold water.

Thermostat for water heater Termeks. Thanks to him, the liquid in the device heats up automatically

There are several types of thermostats: rod, capillary electronic. Although there are models of different designs on the market, they still use the same principle of operation. The temperature sensor constantly monitors the temperature of the liquid. Depending on this parameter, it sends signals to the thermal relay, which starts to close or open the power supply circuit of the heating element. Most often, two thermostats are provided in the design of the water heater: the first controls the heating of water, while the second monitors the state of the first. A feature of expensive models is the presence of three thermostats, and the task of the third is to monitor the health of the heating element. A failed thermostat cannot be repaired, so it is replaced with a new one.

Insulating pads. They are necessary for sealing and protection against electricity. This element must also be changed in case of failure.
Electronic circuits of control and management.

It is from the elements described above that all storage heaters manufactured under the Termex brand consist. It should be said that flow devices also have a similar design, however, they are devoid of a storage tank and have a heating element of increased power.

Typical malfunctions and their causes

Since boiler systems have a relatively simple design, their malfunctions do not differ in variety. All of them boil down to the following manifestations:

  • The appearance of an extraneous potential on the case (they say that the equipment "shocks").
  • The liquid in the boiler heats up too slowly (and sometimes it does not heat the water at all).
  • Hot water cools down too quickly.
  • Leaks are found.

When the water heater "is shocked", the cause of the breakdown is most likely in its electric heater (heater) or the wires suitable for it.

If an extraneous potential appears on the device case, it is necessary to immediately turn it off, eliminating a possible electric shock. If a lack of water heating is detected, the causes of the problem must be sought either in the thermostat or in the heating element, the failure of which usually manifests itself in this way. It is extremely rare that this happens due to a breakdown of the control board.

Repair of Termex water heaters on your own

If slow heating of the coolant is detected, this can also happen “due to the fault” of the heating element, on which a thick layer of scale accumulates during operation. The penultimate of these cases (rapid cooling of water) is the most unpleasant, since this means the loss of thermal insulation properties of the tank and the need to replace it. Usually the same decision is made when leaks are found in the tank.

From the analysis of possible reasons, it can be seen that in order to repair the boiler, one way or another, it will be necessary to remove the tank from it, which is impossible without a special tool. Therefore, before starting repairs, you will have to worry about purchasing a set of adjustable wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers.

And to repair the electrical part of the water heater, you need to stock up on a special device - a multimeter that allows you to measure voltages, as well as check the health of wires and circuits.

Device repair

Start the repair by finding the cause of the device malfunction. Most often, the boiler refuses to work when there is a power outage or damage to the electrical circuit. If there is no power at the outlet, fix it.

Other problems:

  • water is not collected;
  • RCD is triggered;
  • no heating occurs;
  • insufficient degree of heating;
  • the appearance of leaks.

The reason may be a broken heating element.

Fault codes

Some water heaters have a panel where the reason for the failure is displayed in the form of a code or word. The code E1 (vacuum) means that the cold water supply has been cut off when the heating element is on. You should turn off the heating and wait until the tank is completely filled. Only then can the device be connected to the network.

Code E2 (Sensor) indicates a temperature sensor failure. It is recommended to restart the device by switching it off and on briefly.

E3 (Over Heat) means that the temperature of the medium has risen above the critical value of 95 degrees. The thermostat button must be pressed.

Leak in the tank

Leaks can be at the flange attachment point or along the bottom of the tank. The reason is hidden in installation errors, wear of adhesive seams, improper maintenance.In the absence of grounding, premature corrosion also begins.

The cause of the leak from below may be the wear of the gasket on the flange. To fix the problem, before disassembling the device, you need to turn it off, disassemble the flange connection and change the deformed part. Then turn on the boiler and see how it will work.

If the device leaks at the seams, it is easier to replace the model, since it is unlikely that it will be possible to repair the seams on your own at home without deforming the case. A stainless steel tank can be boiled. In the presence of a protective inner coating of glass enamel, welding cannot be used, since the surface layer will become unusable.

scale

Tap water has a high hardness, when heated, salt deposits are deposited on the boiler body and internal parts. What does it threaten:

  • an increase in temperature difference, which can lead to the operation of the RCD;
  • underheating;
  • breakdown.

It is recommended to carry out preventive descaling. The process is carried out in several stages. In order, we disconnect the boiler from the network, turn off the water supply, empty the tank, disconnect the wires and dismantle the heating element.

Then rinse the heater with warm water. Salt deposits are removed using special descaling compounds or using home remedies by adding a bottle of vinegar to the water. It is recommended to soak the heater in this composition until the salts dissolve.

At the final stage, rinse all parts with clean water, dry them and assemble the water heater.

Breakdown of the heating element

The main symptoms of malfunctions

  • water does not heat up;
  • the RCD is triggered and the device is turned off;
  • insufficient heating of the working environment;
  • the power indicator is off;
  • noise inside the structure;
  • at the outlet of the boiler, muddy water with an unpleasant odor is drained;
  • knocks out the machine.

The appearance of the heater does not always make it possible to detect a defect if the shell is not damaged. In this case, use the tester:

  • zero - short circuit;
  • infinity - broken spiral.

The reasons:

  • long service life;
  • overheating of the heating element due to lack of liquid in the boiler;
  • easy to operate filled water heater for a long time;
  • damaged thermostat;
  • voltage fluctuations in the network.

The reason may be scale and wear of the anode. Sometimes it is enough to turn the boiler on and off several times for the device to work.

How to change the heater

Follow the given algorithm:

  1. Disconnect the water heater from the mains.
  2. Close the shut-off valve at the inlet to the device.
  3. Drain the water from the boiler through the drain pipe using a hose.
  4. Disconnect the appliance from the mixer.
  5. Now remove the heater and turn it over.
  6. Loosen the nuts on the flange to remove the bottom cover.
  7. Disconnect the wires from the heating element.
  8. Pull out the thermostat and temperature sensor.
  9. Dismantle the non-working heating element, if necessary, clean it slightly with a screwdriver.

Now it remains to replace the heating element and do the operations in reverse order.

Assembly

Next, a new heating element is installed.

It should be noted that the new element should match the burnt one as much as possible, especially in the part where it is attached to the water heater body, and the number of tubes for the thermostat sensors should also match the old one.

The assembly is carried out in the following sequence:

  • a silicone gasket is installed, it is best to install a new one, its cost is quite small, and a fresh gasket will ensure the tightness of the connection, otherwise there may be leaks;
  • the magnesium anode is inserted into the appropriate place on the heating element;
  • the assembled heating element is inserted into its place in the body of the device;
  • the mounting bar is put in place, the heating element is pressed against it and the nuts are tightened;
  • Thus, the assembly is like a mirror image of the dismantling. Next, with the help of a photo, an electrician is connected and the cover is screwed on.

The fully assembled water heater is returned to its place on the wall. Here, again, it is advisable to do this operation together. Moreover, installation is a slightly more complicated operation than removal.

Then the tank is filled with water, and you need to make sure that there are no leaks. If everything is normal and no leaks are observed, you can make a trial inclusion. The water heater is ready for operation again.
