Do-it-yourself dishwasher repair: video tips

Prevention measures

In order to prevent a situation where half of the program has passed and the sink suddenly stops, you need to remember a few rules for operating the equipment:

  1. Place dishes cleaned of large food residues in the basket;
  2. Keep the coarse filter clean;
  3. Periodically change the bulk filter;
  4. Wash the tank, blades and the entire machine from the inside;
  5. Clean the dishwasher from scale;
  6. Dry after every wash cycle.

Do-it-yourself dishwasher repair: analysis of breakdowns and errors + nuances of elimination

In order to avoid problems with the operation of dishwashers, it is necessary to monitor their operation and carry out maintenance of the machine from time to time. This will take much less time than searching for the causes of the breakdown and its subsequent elimination.

The device and principle of operation of the dishwasher

In order to make repairs, you need to know how the PMM works and how it works. Although different models have structural differences, the principle of operation and the main components are the same.

The work process is divided into several stages:

  • pre-soaking (depending on the selected program);
  • main dishwashing;
  • rinsing (one or two passes, depending on the program);
  • drying.

For normal operation of the machine, the following household chemicals are loaded into it:

  • regenerating salt for water softening;
  • detergent;
  • conditioner.

The principle of operation is that cold water from the water supply enters the PMM, where it is softened by salt in the ion exchanger and heated by an electric heater (hereinafter also referred to as a heating element) to the desired temperature. As soon as the heating is completed, soft water with detergent dissolved in it is supplied under pressure to the surface of the loaded dishes, washing away dirt and food residues.

The liquid flow is distributed by the upper and lower sprinklers (hereinafter also referred to as sprayers), which begin to rotate under water pressure. The drainage pump pumps liquid into the sprayers (hereinafter also referred to as the pump). Rinsing is done with clean water taken from the water supply. Drainage of the waste liquid after washing and rinsing is performed by a drain pump.

The PMM contains coarse and fine filters that clean the liquid from dirt.Thanks to the purification, water takes part in the washing process twice, which saves its consumption. Drying of kitchen utensils, depending on the model of equipment, can be forced and fast, or natural and longer (condensation).

You can read more about the device and the principle of operation of the dishwasher here.

We bring to the attention of readers a video in which you can see what happens inside the dishwasher when washing dishes:

Water supply problems

If the Faucet light comes on, there is a good chance that there is a problem with either the flow inlet filter or the inlet valve. If this Bosch dishwasher model has a display, the machine may also issue an E01 error. What needs to be done?

  1. Close the tee tap so that no more water enters the machine.
  2. If there is an additional flow filter on the hose, then it should be unscrewed, disassembled and thoroughly cleaned from water stone and dirt.
  3. Next, you need to remove the inlet hose, pull out the standard flow filter (installed at the dishwasher inlet), clean and rinse it.

If the above actions did not lead to the elimination of the malfunction, you will have to check the inlet valve. First you need to remove the bottom decorative panel from the Bosch dishwasher. In the front left at the very bottom you will see a filling valve with two contacts and wires going to it. We disconnect the wires, arm ourselves with a multimeter, and check the resistance. If the filling valve is out of order, it must be replaced. You can read more about malfunctions related to the water supply in the article Water does not enter the dishwasher.

Self-draining

The "Faucet" indicator may "show signs of life" if the drain hose is not properly connected to the sewer. It would seem, how does the drain affect the flow of water into the dishwasher? The relationship appears to be very direct. When the dishwasher draws water and it constantly flows by gravity into the sewer, the control module may recognize this phenomenon as the inability to draw water to the desired level. After that, the “Crane” indicator starts blinking, and the machine stops working.

In almost all cases, problems with self-draining occur with dishwashers that have been in operation quite recently. Why is the dishwasher self-draining? Because it's not properly connected to the sewer. It is necessary to immediately stop the dishwasher and make a normal connection. You can read about how to do it correctly in the article How to connect dishwasher for plumbing and sewerage?

"Aqua stop" worked

If the Bosch dishwasher is equipped with a leak protection system, then it is very likely that this particular system has worked. When “Aqua Stop” is triggered, the dishwasher automatically shuts off the water, while often giving a system error with a certain code. The error code may not pop up, but the “Crane” indicator will start blinking for sure. What to do in this situation is described in the article Dishwasher Aquastop Hose, read it and everything will become clear to you.

In conclusion, we note that a burning or blinking “Faucet” indicator on Bosch dishwashers most often indicates a malfunction. What is the nature of these malfunctions and their causes, we tried to review in the framework of this article. We hope you find this information useful, good luck!

The principle of operation of the dishwasher

In order to repair equipment, it is important to understand how it works. After the dishes and detergents are loaded into the device, the program is selected and the start button is pressed, water is supplied

It is fed through the valve into the water collection hopper using a pump. The water level is controlled by a pressure switch, which sends a signal that the intake is complete. Water under pressure enters the impeller, causing it to rotate. At the same time, the detergent drawer opens and mixes with the jets of water from the impeller nozzles.

Water is heated using a heating element, the heating temperature is controlled by a thermocouple. The water drains into the pan and re-enters the atomizer through the filter.

Do-it-yourself dishwasher repair: analysis of breakdowns and errors + nuances of eliminationAfter the end of the program, the signal from the control unit goes to the solenoid valve. It shuts off the water supply to the sprinkler, and opens access to its drain into the sewer. At the same time, the pump starts, pumping water out of the pan. Depending on the program, the cycle is repeated several times. At the end of work, the water drains completely and the drying mode starts. Drying takes place by condensation or by means of warm blowing of dishes. After a while, the microprocessor of the device receives a signal about the end of the process and the door can be opened.

Preventive Maintenance

Complex devices that combine mechanics with electronics cannot last forever, but it is possible to delay their failure. To do this, follow the instructions for use and carry out preventive measures:

  • regularly clean the drain filter and blades;
  • clean the door seal;
  • remove visible dirt, mold, grease in time to prevent the appearance of rust;
  • after the end of the cycle, wipe the dishwasher chamber;
  • use a water softener;
  • clean the car from scale.

The electrical part of the machine is made reliably, but does not tolerate power surges, it is worth using a stabilizer.

The main reasons for the failure of dishwashers

In addition to natural wear and tear, there are several other factors that provoke malfunctions. washing machines utensils. These include:

  • incorrect installation of PMM after its acquisition;
  • violation of the rules for the operation of this household appliance;
  • too hard water in the tap;
  • power grid instability (supply voltage surges);
  • the use of low-quality household chemicals for softening water and washing dishes.

Paradoxically, but true: most dishwasher malfunctions occur precisely for the above reasons.

For example, it is important to observe the restrictions on the length of communications when installing a dishwasher, to set it clearly in level. All legs must be adjusted to the unevenness of the floor so that during operation there are no vibrations that adversely affect the technique. Unfortunately, regenerating salt cannot completely soften hard water.

Over time, limescale is formed not only on the walls of the chamber, but also in the nodes and parts of the PMM. If you do not periodically get rid of such contaminants, the unit will quickly fail.

Unfortunately, regenerating salt cannot fully soften hard water. Over time, limescale is formed not only on the walls of the chamber, but also in the nodes and parts of the PMM. If you do not periodically get rid of such contaminants, the unit will quickly fail.

Voltage fluctuations in the mains are also fraught with a big threat. Because of them, the control electronics fail. Blockages in the drain and sewer system are also common causes of failures in work.

In order for your household appliance to serve for a long time and without fail, strictly follow the instructions attached to it. If you understand that you yourself cannot properly connect the dishwasher, it is better to invite professionals to avoid problems in the future.

The video will be useful to those who do not know how to connect the dishwasher:

How to find out about a breakdown?

The main function of this device installed in the Bosch dishwasher is the constant monitoring of the required liquid level. In the case when the device starts to work incorrectly, this means that the working tank of the unit is probably overfilled, which will lead to poor-quality washing of kitchen utensils and flooding

To avoid such problems, you must carefully monitor the level of liquid in the working tank. If you notice that it exceeds the norm, then this indicates the failure of the pressure switch.

Typically, water sensor failures in any dishwasher occur for the following reasons:

  • Wear of parts of the device.
  • The contacts on the connections of the device have undergone an oxidation process.
  • The low quality of the dishwasher components, which limits the life of the pressure switch.

The main causes of typical malfunctions

Even such reliable equipment as Bosch can fail for quite banal, everyday reasons, for example, due to loading excessively dirty dishes into the washing chamber. Remains of food washed away by the stream of water will clog the filter and cause clogging.

Do-it-yourself dishwasher repair: analysis of breakdowns and errors + nuances of elimination
If the loaded dishes are too dirty and greasy, the unit will not be able to wash them properly, and the hostess will have to additionally rinse the plates and cups manually.

To avoid this situation, it is better to first clean off the food left on the plates, and only then place them in the car.

The dishwasher is badly affected by an incorrect connection to the electrical network and a faulty outlet. Too long a drain hose or poor-quality fastening in the water supply area can also create problems, so installation and installation should be entrusted to professionals.

If the home master wants to do it on his own, you must strictly follow the installation instructions and strictly follow the requirements prescribed by the manufacturer in the passport attached to the unit.

Do-it-yourself dishwasher repair: analysis of breakdowns and errors + nuances of eliminationDishwasher detergent should have a normal shelf life. It is recommended to buy it in a specialized store where the rules for storing household chemicals are observed.

A lot of inconvenience, and subsequently problems, is created by improper loading of dishes into the washing chamber. Many users do not pay attention to this item and then face various problems.

In order for the washing process to take place in normal mode, the dishes in the sections must be placed compactly. Then it will not interfere with the rotation of the irrigation arms, the timely opening of the dispenser, the free passage and uniform flow of water.

Before loading plates, cups and cutlery, you must carefully study the instructions for loading dishes and take into account all the wishes put forward by the manufacturer of the equipment.

The dishes, placed correctly, will be perfectly washed and will not require any additional actions from the hostess.At the same time, the machine will not feel overload and will serve perfectly during the entire operational period.

We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the Bosch dishwasher operating instructions in order to avoid problems in the future due to their violation.

Dishwasher Repair Tool Set

Before you start repairing the dishwasher, you should know for sure that all the necessary tools are at hand. It is very inconvenient to constantly be distracted and run to the hardware store for a washer, nut, bolt or electrical tape.

Approximate list of required tools:

  • A set of flat and curly screwdrivers. They take first place by necessity, as they are an almost universal tool.
  • Set of wrenches. It is most convenient to use a special wrench with a set of heads, but open-end wrenches are also suitable for household appliances.
  • Multimeter. A measuring device that is always useful in the household, especially in the field of electrics.
  • Construction knife with a set of replaceable blades.
  • Insulating tape or heat shrink tubing of various diameters.
  • Flashlight. An ordinary pocket flashlight will do, as there is not always good quality lighting in the room.
  • Operating instructions or electrical diagram of the dishwasher model that needs repair.

Problems in the operation of the fill and drain lines

Water supply problems arise for a variety of reasons. In addition, not only the breakdowns mentioned above occur in the drain system.

The code

Description

E3

For a certain period of time, water did not accumulate in the required volume. The problem may occur due to weak or no pressure in the water supply.The reasons can also be: a breakdown of the inlet valve, a clogged inlet or flow filter in front of the inlet hose, a malfunction of the water level sensor (hereinafter also referred to as the pressure switch). Sometimes the problem lies in the failure of the Aquastop system

E5

The pressure switch does not give a command to stop the water supply to the PMM tank, although it is already filled to capacity. The cause of the overflow may be a malfunction of the intake valve or the absence of a command to stop the flow of fluid from the electronic control unit (hereinafter also referred to as the ECU)

E8 or E3

PMM cannot collect water for the allotted time period. Because of this, further work is impossible - the machine will stop the failure of the pump to work in circulation mode. A tubular electric heater (hereinafter also referred to as a heating element) will also not heat water.

E16

The fault is similar to that described for code E5. Only here the main cause of fluid overflow is a clogged or damaged intake valve. There is a possibility that the cause was an excess of foam formation due to an overdose of detergent

E17

The inlet valve is not able to completely shut off the flow of water from the water supply. The reasons can be either a malfunction of the valve, or too much water pressure. In the latter case, it must be partially closed with a shut-off valve.

E21 or F

The pump has stopped working. At the same time, voltage and control signals from the ECU are applied to it. Perhaps the cause was a foreign object that fell into the impeller. Such consequences are caused by the lack of lubrication in the rotor hub and its jamming. The error sometimes appears in conjunction with the code E22

The reason for the appearance of the inscription E17 may be a water hammer in the plumbing system

The listed breakdowns, along with blockages, occur quite often in dishwashers, leading to the reset of running washing programs and spontaneous draining of the liquid.

To determine the cause, check the intake tract:

  • find out if there is pressure in the water supply;
  • remove the inlet flow filter and clean it if it is clogged;
  • diagnose the inlet valve for its performance;
  • check for debris in the pressure switch tube and remove it if there is.

Error code E3 in the Bosch dishwasher, appearing along with the E8 combination

In the drain system, it is necessary to check if the pump is clogged. Sometimes rotor lubrication helps to restore its performance. If the impeller rotates freely, but there is an open in the pump windings (checked with a multimeter), it will have to be replaced.

Water leaks to the floor

Another of the most common dishwasher failures is a housing leak. There is a possibility of one or more reasons:

  1. The sealing tape located around the perimeter of the door is leaky. Closing density is reduced. It is necessary to replace bad seals or clean them from plaque.
  2. The pump seal may also be damaged. Then the seal needs to be replaced.
  3. Poor quality strengthening of drain and water-injection communications. There are leaks at the connection points.
  4. In the side part of all dishwashers there is a storage tank for water. In some cases, it may leak. In such situations, it must be replaced, as it cannot be repaired.

To accurately locate the leak, the dishwasher must be completely detached.Then under it you need to lay out blank sheets of paper. At the places of leakage, drops of water that have fallen on the paper will be visible.

Dishwasher repair: drain not working

When the dishwasher is working properly in everything, but the waste water does not drain well or even accumulates inside the washing compartment, the malfunction may be hiding in the drain communication pump and therefore there is no drain.

To fix this problem with your own hands, you should conduct a detailed inspection of the pump for clogging and winding resistance. Stagnation of water in the machine can happen precisely because of the clogging of the pump. When it turns out that there is no debris in the pump, it is necessary to inspect all drain communications, including the siphon. Most likely, the drain channel could be clogged. In this case, you should simply remove all blocking elements.

Do-it-yourself dishwasher repair: analysis of breakdowns and errors + nuances of elimination

Sometimes the dishwasher will not drain because the position of the drain hose is too high in relation to the level of the machine. After the pump is turned off, part of the used water flows back into the washing compartment of the machine.

Causes of malfunctions in the dishwasher

Do-it-yourself dishwasher repair: analysis of breakdowns and errors + nuances of elimination

The reasons why relatively new dishwashers break down can be as follows:

  • low quality parts or poor assembly. This problem is observed in cheap models made in China;
  • socket problems. No matter how ridiculous it may sound, but this happens;
  • some owners of dishwashing machines load it without removing food residue. This can lead to clogging of the filter, besides, the dishwasher will not always cope with the task of cleaning too dirty dishes;
  • the dishwasher is not connected correctly;
  • the door is not tightly closed, which prevents the mechanism from turning on.There are also models in which the door is not fixed in the lower position. This is not a breakdown, but an elementary defect of the manufacturers;
  • poor quality detergent that is not able to completely wash the dishes;
  • also, one of the reasons may be improper loading of the device, as a result of which one of the sections of the dishwasher undergoes incomplete cleaning. Following the instructions, the bottom should be filled with pots and other dimensional utensils, and the top with cups and plates (mugs and cups should be turned upside down).

If you have eliminated all the above described shortcomings, and your equipment still does not work correctly, then it is worth talking about a malfunction of the parts.

Dishwasher not washing dishes

The machine turns on, fills with water, heats the water. But then the characteristic sound of washing is not heard. There are no water flows. There may be three reasons. Firstly, the filter is clogged. The filter is located at the very bottom of the dish chamber. It needs to be opened and washed. Secondly, the nozzles in the combs are clogged. The nozzles can be cleaned with a toothpick. Thirdly, the circulation pump has broken down, which drives water from the bottom of the dish chamber to the nozzles and ensures washing dishes. This pump works with a characteristic sound when the dishes are washed. If there is no sound, then the pump is probably broken. You can replace the pump yourself. It is installed under the bottom of the dish chamber. Power is supplied to it with a clip, water is supplied and discharged through tubes, which are put on the inlet and outlet pipes of the pump and secured with clamps. Clamps must be removed, tubes disconnected. The pump is attached with one or more self-tapping screws. Unscrew them and remove the pump. Installation is in the reverse order.

Water does not pour

There may be several reasons. Firstly, the water supply valve is faulty. This valve is installed immediately after the water supply pipe from the water supply. It usually, together with this branch pipe, forms a monolithic, non-separable structure. Secondly, the mesh, which is installed between the hose from the water supply and the inlet pipe, is clogged. Thirdly, the water level sensor is faulty. It always seems to the car that the water has already poured.

Let's check and clear the mesh first, as this is the easiest. If it does not help, then take out the valve and check it with a tester. Conductivity must be present. If there is conductivity, you need to read what is written on this valve.If it is designed for 220V, then you can very carefully (so as not to get energized yourself), plug it into the network and make sure that it opens, for example, by blowing into it. If it is designed for a different voltage, then this voltage must be applied. In some machines, this valve is powered by a 12 volt power supply to the brain. But such valves are very rare. Usually 220V is supplied. It is clear that if 220 is applied to a 12-volt valve, it will immediately burn out.

If the problem is not in the mesh and not in the valve, then the level sensor is faulty. Here I want to upset you, if the level sensor malfunctions, the heating element usually immediately burns out.

Causes of dishwasher failures

Unfortunately, even the most wear-resistant and durable dishwashers, such as Bosch (), Indesit, Veko, Electrolux and others, can break down. The following reasons may contribute to the appearance of malfunctions:

  • fluctuations in electricity ("jumps");
  • water characterized by hardness, that is, saturated with various small particles, for example, salts;
  • low-quality household chemicals that are not suitable for the dishwasher;
  • neglect of the rules of operation and maintenance of the dishwasher;
  • improperly installed dishwasher.

Basically, the dishwasher breaks down not due to malfunctions of some parts and mechanisms, but due to clogging of various filters, contamination of parts, build-up of scale or adverse external factors (“power surges”, low water pressure).

Therefore, it is imperative to carefully study the instruction manual in order to properly use the dishwasher.In addition, knowing how it should, according to some indicators, you can independently understand what kind of malfunction occurred and why the work process was suspended. So, if the icon in the form of a lock is displayed, this indicates that the door is not closed tightly, so the Bosch dishwasher does not draw water so as not to flood the room.

The dishwasher works by interacting with many different factors, therefore it reacts sharply to changes in external factors, thanks to sensors such as temperature, that is, a thermostat, water level, that is, a pressure switch, pressure, water purity and much more. If suddenly there is a breakdown of the sensor itself, then the operation of the dishwasher may be suspended. Since the sensors operate in dirty conditions, they often become dirty and, as a result, break.

If a breakdown occurs and the Bosch dishwasher does not work or the Indesit machine does not turn on, the dishwasher can, in principle, be repaired independently. The only thing is that for this you need to know how the sensors interact, how the process of washing dishes takes place, and you also need to know the internal structure of the dishwasher thoroughly.

Water heating problems

If during the washing mode the washing machine freezes for a long time, stops, does not heat up or constantly drains water, the causes of the breakdown should be sought in the heating circuit. The device will signal these problems with codes F04, F07 or F08.

Failure of the heating element or pressure switch and codes F04, F07

In washing modes that require heating, the error may appear immediately after start-up, or after water is drawn, but rinsing or washing in cold water will work normally.In this case, there are several options for solving the problem (in addition to the standard turn on / off the machine to restart the controller).

If the code appeared on the display at the washing stage or at startup (the machine does not even want to draw water), most likely the reason lies in the heating element itself. It can "punch" on the case when the contacts are separated or simply burn out.

To fix the problem, you need to get to the heating element, check all its connections, change the resistance with a multimeter (at a power of 1800 W it should give out about 25 ohms).

To replace a faulty heating element, disconnect the cable with wires, unscrew the fixing nut (1), press on the pin (2) and pry off the sealing rubber (3), then install a new part and assemble in the reverse order

If the device collects and then immediately drains water, the cause may be a breakdown of the pressure switch - the water level sensor. In the event of a malfunction, this element can provide the controller with information that the heater was not immersed in water, so the machine does not start heating.

In this case, it is necessary to check the tube of the water pressure sensor with the pressure switch (the hose may become clogged, bent, frayed or come off). At the same time, inspect the contacts of the sensor itself - it may be necessary to clean them. But more precisely, code F04 “says” about the breakdown of the pressure switch - most likely, the part will require replacement.

To check the operation of the pressure switch, you need to put on its inlet fitting a small piece of hose with a diameter identical to the removed tube and blow - characteristic clicks will be heard from a serviceable part

In some cases, the problem may be in the board itself, faulty wiring or contact groups in the area from the board to the heater or water level sensor.Therefore, you should ring all the elements of the control unit associated with the operation of the heating circuit, if necessary, replace burnt tracks or the controller itself.

Malfunctions in the heating circuit and symbol F08

If the water heating does not work correctly (or the machine “seems” that it starts when the tank is empty), error code F08 will appear on the display. The most common cause is a malfunction in the pressure switch circuit.

Such a problem may occur due to high humidity in the room, which adversely affects the controller. To make sure that the board is in order, inspect it, wipe it dry or blow it with a hair dryer.

Another simple solution to the problem can be the disconnected contacts of the heating element and the pressure switch, especially if the device was first started after transportation. In other cases, a more professional inspection with possible replacement of parts will be required.

First, make sure that there really is no water in the tank, then remove the back panel of the machine and check the heating element with a tester

Possible malfunctions of Ariston machines, indicated by code F8:

  • If the washing mode is interrupted immediately after starting or during the washing phase and the appliance does not heat the water, it is likely that the heating element will need to be replaced.
  • If the machine stops after starting, when switching to the rinse mode or does not wring out, it is possible that the contact group of the heating element relay has “sticked” on the controller in the on state. In this case, you can replace the failed elements of the microcircuit and, if necessary, reflash the board.
  • If the device “freezes” in various modes (and this can be either washing or rinsing or spinning), the wiring or contacts in the heater circuit may be damaged, or the pressure switch may break, which considers that the machine does not receive enough water.

But if, when checking all the connections of the circuit and separately the pressure switch, the heating element relay and the heating element itself, no damage is detected, the controller will have to be changed.
