Waste oil heat guns: analysis of types + instructions for making your own hands

Diesel heat guns: indirect and direct heating.what guns on diesel fuel (diesel oil) are better? the principle of operation of gasoline guns. reviews

Diesel fuel design

In areas where access to power is impossible or limited, it is optimal to make a diesel thermal do-it-yourself cannon. This equipment is a little more difficult to make on your own, unlike the electrical counterpart, since you will need to make two cases and use welding. It takes about 15 liters of fuel to heat a room of approximately 700 m².

Principle of operation

The bottom element in this design is the diesel fuel tank. A gun is directly installed on top, in which there is a fan and a combustion chamber. Fuel enters the chamber, and the fan transmits heated air. To ignite and transfer fuel, a fuel pump, connecting hose, nozzle and filter will be needed.An electric motor is connected to the fan.

The combustion chamber is installed in the center at the top of the body. This is an iron cylinder with a diameter approximately 2 times smaller than the diameter of the body. The products of fuel combustion are removed from the chamber using a vertically installed pipe.

Assembly Features

The lower part must be located at a distance of at least 20 cm from the upper body. So that the fuel container does not heat up excessively, it must be made of a material with low thermal conductivity. You can also choose a conventional metal tank, which must be covered with a heat-insulating layer.

The upper part must be made of thick metal. A piece of metal pipe will do. In the case you need to place:

  • fan with electric motor;
  • nozzle with fuel pump;
  • combustion chamber with a pipe for the output of combustion products.

After that, a fuel pump is attached, and a metal pipe is brought to the tank, with the help of which fuel is supplied first to the fuel filter, and then to the nozzle. Protective nets are installed along the edges of the upper body. You need to think about the power supply for the fan to work first. If access to the mains is limited, a rechargeable battery can be used.

During the operation of a diesel heater, safety precautions must be observed. Even at a distance of one meter, the hot airflow can reach 450 degrees. It is not advised to use this device in enclosed spaces, as the combustion products of diesel fuel are dangerous to humans.

In addition to heaters that run on diesel fuel, other combustible materials are also used for guns, for example, engine oil.

How to choose a heat gun

Before choosing a heat gun, there are a few important things to consider.

Unit form. Thermal liquid fuel heaters can have a rectangular and cylindrical shape. Rectangular due to the large area of distribution of the air flow can be used as the best option during construction work indoors.
For spot heating of objects or areas in a room, a cylindrical gun is more suitable.

Mobility. Portable units are very convenient to use, they are easy to carry, some models are equipped with trolleys. Stationary units are used for permanent space heating. When they are installed, special installation work is required.

heating method. The air flow can be heated directly or indirectly

This is important if the heater is to be used in rooms with people or animals.

Types of fuel used. The combustible mixture should be selected based on specific situations and the rationality of its use.

Noisiness

Some heat guns (high power) on diesel fuel are not recommended for use in small rooms due to their high noise.

Unit power. This parameter should be taken into account first of all before choosing a diesel heat gun. The quality of heating the room or its drying depends on it. Information about the power of the device can be found in the description for it.

Most heat guns have a temperature control knob, with which you can adjust the operation of the unit to a predetermined room temperature, after which it turns off. The device does not turn on if the temperature on the display is lower than in the room. Also, diesel heaters are equipped with a protective system against overheating.

How is heat gun power calculated?

The thermal power of the device is calculated by the formula: V * T * K = kcal / h, where:

  • V is the volume of the room (width * length * height), in m3;
  • T is the difference between the temperature outside and in the room, in degrees Celsius;
  • K is the coefficient of thermal dissipation.

For different types of premises, the values of the coefficient are set:

  • from 3.0 to 4.0 - a room in which thermal insulation is not provided, for example, a structure made of wood or sheet metal;
  • from 2.0 to 2.9 - a room with poor thermal insulation. A simple building with one brick masonry;
  • from 1.0 to 1.9 - a building with an average level of thermal insulation (laying in 2 bricks and several windows, a standard roof);
  • from 0.6 to 0.9 - a building with high quality thermal insulation. Brick building with double insulation. Double glazing on windows. The base under the floor is of sufficient thickness. On the roof, for insulation, high quality material is used.

Power calculation example thermal diesel gun:

  • V = 150 m3;
  • T = 29° С (outside temperature -10° С, required indoors +19° С, the difference will be - +29° С);
  • K = 2 (one-brick building);

We substitute the data into the formula: 150 * 29 * 2 = 8700 kcal / h, despite the fact that 1 kWh = 860 kcal / h. So: 8700/860 = 10.116 kWh.Thus, we learned that to heat this building, a liquid fuel heat gun with a minimum power of 10 kWh is required. It is recommended to buy a unit with some power reserve.

Direct heating heat generator

The diesel heat gun of direct heating is not equipped with a chimney and has the simplest design. Therefore, once-through heaters are inexpensive, compact, easy to use and reliable. The ignition of the fuel occurs with the help of a spark plug, in some models - from an electric spark gap. The heated air stream, together with the exhaust gases, enters the building that needs to be heated.

The use of such a heater is possible only in non-residential buildings with a good ventilation system or on construction sites (open).

The following shows the device of the diesel plant of the direct heating method.

Features of infrared "fan heaters"

IR guns differ from their predecessors in the principle of operation. The generated heat reaches the surrounding objects not through directed air flows, but through radiation. For operation, the equipment is connected either to an electrical circuit or to a gas cylinder.

Waste oil heat guns: analysis of types + instructions for making your own handsHeat rays are distributed in a rectilinear plane and are not absorbed by air masses. Heated objects gradually give off thermal energy to the air and people - spot heating reduces the cost of electricity and fuel (+)

There is no fan in the design, heat transfer occurs due to the emitter - flametin. The heating element is a spiral made of an alloy of different metals, enclosed in a tube of quartz glass. When heated, tubular heating elements generate infrared radiation.

Behind the heating element is a reflector - a mirror reflector focuses infrared rays in the right direction and prevents heating of the internal mechanisms and body of the gun.

Waste oil heat guns: analysis of types + instructions for making your own handsDue to the ability of radiation to heat surfaces in the affected area, the IR gun is used for effective drying of painted products, plastered walls, rapid defrosting of objects and heating of the workplace

The pros and cons of the device largely depend on the type of thermal energy generator - an electric heating element or a liquid fuel burner. Each model has distinctive features of an electric or diesel gun, respectively.

Compared to "fan" models, IR heaters do not provoke drafts and are very quiet. The disadvantage is the low heating rate of the entire room.

Causes of failure of heat guns

The most common reasons that can provoke a breakdown of a heat gun include:

• Poor quality source of energy (fuel); • Violations of the rules of operation; • Fluctuations in electricity.

As a rule, the heating elements will wear out first. But if there is an air heating element in the gun, then it cannot be repaired. It can only be replaced.

Another common breakdown can be attributed to problems with electric motors. The reason for this is fluctuations and disturbances in the supply of electricity.

It is better to buy a heat gun in specialized stores, where consultants will help you choose the right unit, and a guarantee is installed on the products. Also, at large stores there are service centers that will carry out diagnostics and high-quality repairs, if necessary.In order to avoid malfunctions, all operating conditions of the device must be met. It is necessary to carry out all the necessary cleaning, washing filters and refueling, turn the device on and off correctly.

Manufacturers of heat guns in development

On sale you can find ready-made models of devices that work on used oil. They differ from home-made devices in their aesthetic appearance, high efficiency, energy intensity, and high technical characteristics.

Varieties of diesel heat guns

Guns of this type are also called liquid fuel: they can be used as fuel for both diesel and kerosene or diesel fuel. It is strictly forbidden to use gasoline, alcohol and other flammable liquids to refuel such devices.

Diesel heat guns can be not only mobile, but also stationary. Similar designs have an outlet pipe connected to a chimney through which combustion waste is removed.

The choice of fuel must be approached very carefully, since the use of poor quality or contaminated fuel can clog the nozzle and / or filter, which will require the intervention of repairmen.Diesel guns are characterized by high power, high efficiency, as well as compact size, so that such units are quite mobile.

All units operating on economical diesel fuel can be divided into two types: with direct and indirect heating.

The basis of devices with direct heating is an elementary principle of operation: a burner is arranged inside the body, through the flame of which air blown by a fan passes. As a result, it heats up, and then breaks out, giving off heat to the environment.

A diesel heat gun with open heating cannot be used for heating residential premises, since its design does not provide for exhaust pipes. As a result, waste substances, including carbon monoxide, enter the room, which can lead to poisoning of people in it.

Such devices are distinguished by high power of 200-250 kW and almost 100 percent efficiency. They are inexpensive, easy to install, but they have an important drawback: not only warmed air flows into the outer space, but also combustion products: soot, smoke, fumes.

Even good ventilation will not be able to completely rid the air of unpleasant odors and the smallest particles, and if it is completely absent, living beings in the room can get severe poisoning.

A device with indirect heating is much more complicated. In such models, the air is heated indirectly, through a special chamber - a heat exchanger, where heat is transferred to the air flow.

Diesel heat guns with indirect heating have a higher cost and lower efficiency compared to similar products with a direct heat source.However, they are widely used due to the best indicators of environmental friendliness and safety.

In such units, the heated exhaust gases, together with the heat, enter the heat exchanger, from where they are discharged into the smoke channel, to which a special pipe is connected. With its help, the products of combustion are removed from the closed space to the outside, providing fresh air in the heated room.

Advantages of indirect heat guns

Particular attention of consumers, primarily owners of garages, is used by heat guns with indirect heating. Models of diesel heat guns with high power may have large dimensions

They are used for heating large premises: warehouses, factory floors

Models of diesel heat guns with high power may have large dimensions. They are used for heating large premises: warehouses, factory floors

The advantages of such models include:

  • Mobility. Although the dimensions and weight of such devices are somewhat larger than those with open heating, they are still quite compact in size, which allows them to be transported around the room within the length of the connecting element and the chimney.
  • Great power. Although this figure is higher for devices with direct heating, the power of indirect diesel guns is enough to heat a large area in a short time.
  • Reliability. Such devices have a well-thought-out design, which minimizes the risk of fire, and also increases the durability of the guns.
  • Many factory models have a special protection system that automatically turns off the gun immediately after the room temperature reaches the set point.
  • Factory-made products are equipped with thermal insulation pads to prevent heat build-up in the case, reducing the risk of burns to the user.
  • On some models, tanks of large volumes are provided, which allows them to be used for a long time without thinking about fuel.

The disadvantage of such structures can be considered a high noise level, especially for high-power units.
