Weigh all the pros and cons
We talked a little about "for". In addition to the emotional and sensual component described above, the advantages that stove heating of a private house undoubtedly has include independence from public utilities with their schedule for the seasonal distribution of heat to those in need and all sorts of possible failures of heating networks that can deprive your home of comfort for long days or even weeks. . The undoubted advantage of the village stove is also the creation of a healthy microclimate at home: villagers do not know what dry skin and brittle hair are in the autumn-winter-spring period, because good stove heating does not dry the air at home.
Wood-fired brick oven
According to experts, a wood-fired brick oven is the most efficient stationary design.
The advantages of a wood-burning heating unit are obvious and its presence in the house provides high-quality space heating, because:
- stone as a building material has the ability to accumulate and gradually release heat. At the same time, the furnace heating system can have hobs and thus it turns out that in addition to heat supply, the house will have a unit on which not only food is cooked, but also, if necessary, clothes are dried;
- the stove can be heated with a variety of dry fuels, including branches, peat, coal, paper, cardboard, wood waste, etc. It is also allowed to use modern fuel intended for solid fuel stoves;
- this wood-fired heating structure is not dependent on interruptions in the power supply or the supply of other sources of thermal energy. At all times, such a furnace functioned autonomously;
- now having a stove as an emergency (alternative) source of heating has become not only fashionable, but also relevant. The fact is that outside the city limits, inventions that make life easier for a person function only if there is an uninterrupted supply of electricity.
Based on the foregoing, it becomes clear that the projects of houses with stove heating will be very popular for a long time.

Memo "Stove heating and safety measures"
Izmailovskoye municipality / 08/10/2018 / / Civil defense and emergency situations, News
In order to prevent the occurrence of fires in housing, the Department of Supervisory Activities and Preventive Work of the Admiralteisky District draws the attention of owners of individual private housing and summer cottages to the need to comply with the necessary safety measures and rules when using stove heating:
- Before the start of the heating season, stoves and chimneys must be cleaned, repaired, whitewashed and cracks repaired;
- Before the start of the heating season, each stove, as well as wall smoke channels within the premises, and especially chimneys in the attic, must be whitewashed with lime or clay mortar so that black cracks from the smoke passing through them can be seen on a white background;
- The stove, chimney at the junction with wooden attic or interfloor ceilings must have a thickening of the brickwork - cutting. Do not forget about the thickening of the walls of the furnace;
- It is extremely dangerous to leave heating stoves unattended or in the care of young children;
- It is impossible to use combustible and flammable liquids for ignition of furnaces;
- Any furnace must have an independent foundation and not adjoin the entire plane of one of the walls to wooden structures. It is necessary to leave an air gap between them - a retreat;
- On a wooden floor in front of the firebox, it is necessary to nail a metal (pre-furnace) sheet with dimensions of at least 50 by 70 cm;
- In order to prevent the furnace from overheating, it is recommended to heat it 2 - 3 times a day and no more than an hour and a half;
- 3 hours before going to bed, the furnace fire should be stopped;
- To avoid the formation of cracks in the masonry, it is necessary to periodically clean the chimney from soot accumulating in it;
- Do not dry things and raw firewood on the stove;
- Make sure that furniture, curtains are at a distance of at least 1.5 meters from the array of the heating stove;
- In no case should you heat the stove with wood that does not fit into the firebox in length. On logs, fire can go outside and spread to nearby objects, floors and walls;
- Only specialists should be involved in the repair and laying of furnaces;

A word about fire safety
In addition to the fact that the furnace must be properly designed, it is necessary to carefully monitor the quality of its masonry. Unless you're building your own stove heating, check each layer of brickwork for cracks that could then fire sparks or even flames. The second thing to follow is the presence of the so-called retreat - the air space between the stove and the wooden walls of the house. In addition, all measures should be taken to insulate the walls, floor and ceiling of the house from the heated surfaces of the furnace. Believe me, your safety in this case is completely in your hands!

Memo on fire safety measures during the operation of stove heating
—
The peak of "stove" fires falls precisely on the heating season, during the period of cold weather
Tenants and homeowners during the summer period lose their skills in handling heating appliances, forget about safety precautions. Yes, and the furnace equipment itself becomes unusable over time.
The main causes of "furnace" fires:
Firstly, violation of the rules for the device of the furnace:
insufficient cutting of chimneys in places where they pass through wooden floors, as well as small indents - the distances between the walls of the furnace and the wooden structures of the partitions and walls of the house; the absence of a pre-furnace sheet. An independent foundation is being built under the furnace.
Secondly, violation of fire safety rules during the operation of the furnace:
ignition of the stove with gasoline, kerosene and other flammable liquids; the use of firewood, the length of which exceeds the size of the firebox; furnace overheating; doors left open drying clothes or other items near the hearth.
Recommendations for the installation and operation of furnace heating:
It must be remembered that not only good traction, heat dissipation, economy and aesthetic qualities are valued in the furnace, but also safety.
An improperly folded stove can start a house fire. To prevent this from happening, do not entrust the laying of the furnace to persons who are not familiar with the fire safety rules when installing furnace heating.
Before the start of the heating season, stoves should be checked and repaired, chimneys should be cleaned of soot and whitewashed. Faulty stoves, fireplaces and chimneys should not be allowed to operate.
The stove must be white; this will allow timely detection of malfunctions, cracks in the stove that can lead to a fire, since a black trace of smoke is clearly visible on a white background.
To remove smoke, vertical chimneys without ledges should be used. At the intersection of chimneys with combustible structures, the distance from the inner surface of the smoke channels to these structures must be at least 38 cm.
To protect a combustible and slow-burning floor, a metal sheet 70x50 cm in size should be provided in front of the furnace firebox. Under frame stoves and kitchen stoves with legs, the floors must be protected with roofing steel on asbestos cardboard 10 mm thick. The height of the metal legs of the ovens must be at least 100 mm.
In garden houses, only solid fuel stoves are allowed.
During the operation of stove heating is prohibited:
- Leave heating stoves unattended, and also entrust children with supervision of them.
- Place fuel and other combustible substances and materials on the pre-furnace sheet.
- Use gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel and other flammable and combustible liquids for ignition of stoves.
- To heat with coal, coke and gas furnaces not designed for these types of fuel.
- To fire furnaces during indoor meetings and other mass events.
- Reheat ovens.
- Install metal furnaces that do not meet fire safety requirements, standards and specifications. When installing temporary metal and other factory-made furnaces, the instructions (instructions) of the manufacturers, as well as the requirements of the design standards for heating systems, must be followed.
Rules of conduct in case of fire:
- if a fire or signs of burning (smoke, burning smell, elevated temperature) is detected, immediately report by phone 01 or 112;
- at the same time, give the address of the object, the place of the fire and give your last name;
- in the event of a threat to people's lives, immediately organize their rescue, using the available forces and means for this;
- before the arrival of the fire department, use the available primary fire extinguishing agents (water, sand, snow, fire extinguishers, fabric materials moistened with water) to extinguish the fire;
- remove the elderly, children, the disabled and the sick from the danger zone.
It's time to decide on the type of furnace
Depending on what you think your stove should be able to do, choose from the variety of stoves that currently exist. And it is like this:
- Furnace - "potbelly stove". As funny as it sounds, this is a very common option for a country house. Especially if the latter is not intended for year-round use. It is quite capable of warming a small residential or utility room, heating water and preparing simple food. Moreover, she is ready to do this without any special financial and labor costs on your part.In addition, stove heating by means of a “potbelly stove” does not require a long preliminary design.
- The Dutch oven. The most common type of heating furnace in our country. The design feature of the "Dutch" is such that, with a relatively small size, it has a relatively large heating area. And therefore it is able to heat up to sixty squares of the room. At the same time, the same design features allow the “Dutch” to heat up quite quickly and cool down for a long time. Well, another plus of this stove is its beautiful appearance. With the appropriate design, the “Dutch” stove can become a decoration for your home.
- Kitchen stove. Its purpose is obviously different from the functions of the “relative” described above. If you live in a village house that is decent in all respects, you cannot do without a solid fuel stove. She can cook food, feed livestock, dry mushrooms and berries, and simply heat the water and keep it warm until morning washing will also allow. There are three types of rustic stoves: a) simple, that is, without an oven and a water-heating box; b) stoves with ovens; c) complex stoves with an oven and a water box.
- Russian oven. The most famous type in fairy tales. And the most versatile: it heats, cooks, steams, bakes bread, warms a couch for a comfortable and healing sleep. If you wish, you can even take a steam bath in it, they say. And all this is so in Russian, that is, without much hassle and all at once, at the same time.
Some cons
The oven involves a little more care and labor.Melting it and keeping it on fire is not only pleasure, but also work. And by the way, so is your time. In addition, maintaining it in order and in working condition will also require effort, time, and money. First of all, this is regular cleaning of the chimney, in some European countries it is recognized as such an important event that its regularity and obligation are enshrined in law, and negligent and unlawful owners are subject to administrative and even criminal liability.
With a stove, it will not be possible to maintain a stable thermal regime in the house. As a rule, in the evening it will always be warmer in the house than in the morning. Or vice versa, depending on what time you will heat it. In addition, an obligatory component that characterizes stove heating in a wooden house is a cold floor. Of course, with a competent approach, all these shortcomings can be eliminated.
Cleaning in a house with stove heating is obviously more than in a building with centralized heat supply.
The oven is flammable. However, electric heaters are no less fire hazardous. It all depends on the so-called human factor.
Do not forget also that the stove is a rather bulky structure that “eats up” a decent part of the usable area of your house. And if you are not ready to give extra meters, then you should think again whether you need stove heating.
house with stove heating
Based on the report of British scientists, it can be said that one wood burning stove an outdated design releases about the same amount of particulate matter into the atmosphere as 5 diesel engines running at the same time.This means that heating a house with such a stove is very harmful to the environment, yet it is one of the sources of air pollution.
The British, like no one else, know what they are talking about. Many people still talk about the serious air pollution that happened in London in the winter of 1952. Thick smoke filled the streets of the city, it was so dense that it was difficult to see anything beyond your nose. More than 12 thousand residents of the capital became victims of the caustic fog. This incident was called the "Great Smog".
This collapse happened precisely because of the stove heating, which was then used in every house. Then measures began to be taken and the Clean Air Act was issued. However, despite all the bans, about 68% of houses in London are still heated with wood. Because of this, the air is heavily polluted, which negatively affects people's health. Thousands of Britons suffer from it every year.
Recent studies show that people who inhale wood combustion products increase blood clotting, arterial stiffness, and develop systemic diseases. If a person is constantly in a house that is heated with wood, he will inevitably develop diseases of the respiratory tract and the cardiovascular system.
Wood combustion products contain about 14 carcinogenic compounds, 4 of which cause cancer. These are silent killers: we do not feel or notice them, and thanks to their tiny size, they easily enter the respiratory tract, settling in the lungs. In terms of harmfulness, this is comparable to the exhaust gases of cars.
The saddest thing is that the concentration of harmful particles in the air is only accumulating. If such a stove burns for two or three hours, the concentration of carcinogens will approximately double.I think it’s not worth saying that it’s definitely not worth sleeping in a room with a stove.
The most dangerous wood stoves for pregnant women and children. Combustion products can harm the fetus in the womb. This increases the risk of having children with reduced body weight.
From all this, only one conclusion can be drawn: it’s time for the old wood-burning stoves to remain in the past. It is better to replace them with more modern models or even switch to gas or electricity heating. Health is the most important thing, take care of yourself!
If you are afraid that alternative heating methods will cost more, then urgently read, how can you save on electricity in the house. In addition, for a reasonable use of resources, do not forget to properly insulate the house.
