Is it worth using gas convectors for heating a house or cottage?

Despite the fact that gas convectors are a good alternative to water boilers, their use is possible with maximum benefit only in non-residential premises, such as a barn, basement, garage, workshop, warehouse, basement.
In a residential building, it is acceptable to use a convector only in the form of a fireplace, where fire-resistant ventilation must be present to exit the exhaust pipe. In addition, this convector will only serve as an addition to the main standard heating system, since it cannot replace it.
Due to the fact that the installation of gas convectors requires a special complex circuit for supplying gas and a ventilation system for the removal of combustion products, they are significantly inferior to electric convectors of the same power.
The traditional heating system with boilers, pipes, radiators and circulation pumps today has only one noteworthy alternative - electric oil convectors. If it were not for the significant difference in the price of gas and electricity, then such convectors would have replaced gas convectors long ago. And with the growth of current gas prices, this will happen soon, and the heating system with electric convectors will have no competitors at all.
I really hope that this article will help you decide on the choice of heating system for your home.
Machine safety
The best electric heating convectors are those that are endowed with the maximum number of protective modules
We recommend that you always pay attention to the presence of built-in security systems, as they directly affect the safety of the users themselves and young children. Let's see what should be on board a safe electric convector:
Pay special attention to the safety of the convector, especially if you have children
- Rounded body shapes - it would seem that there is nothing critical in this. But if the edges and corners are rounded, small children playing on the floor will not cause serious injury to themselves. You can smile endlessly and question this fact, but you need to take care of your children - hitting the temporal part of the head on an acute angle can lead to various troubles;
- The presence of protection against moisture and splashes according to IP 24 - this will allow the operation of electric convectors in wet rooms. For example, if you want to hang heaters in a damp basement or bathroom, it is better to look at models with protection;
- Dust protection is an interesting option, useful not only for allergy sufferers, but also for healthy people. It's no secret that electric convectors (like any other) raise dust into the air, which spreads throughout the rooms. It affects human health, and heaters with dust filters allow you to trap dust particles and keep them inside;
- Drop protection - provides protection for equipment and interior items from overheating and fire in case of accidental fall of equipment on the floor;
- Overheating protection - pursues the same goals as in the previous paragraph;
- Frost protection - prevents freezing of rooms and buildings in those moments when no one lives there. In this case, electric convectors maintain the air temperature at +5-6 degrees.
Attention should also be paid to improved electrical protection - it is best that it still be, as it ensures the safety of users.
Operating tips
If we talk about tips for the operation of the category of equipment in question, then the first thing I would like to name is that it is imperative to read the instruction manual before use. Many neglect this simple advice, although you can learn a lot of features of a particular model of a gas converter from the instructions. Also, do not neglect the services of an installation specialist. He will be able to carry out the correct installation of the device. This will simply save time and money, so as not to redo it later if something was done wrong by you.
Review the operation of the gas convector in the following video.
Pros and cons of gas convection heating
The production of heating appliances is developing due to the demand for gas equipment.
Among the main benefits noted by users are the following:
- Economic benefit. The purchase and installation of a gas unit is more expensive than an electric counterpart, but subsequently you will have to pay much less for fuel consumption. Especially if the source is natural gas.
- Versatility. Gas appliances are designed to connect both natural and bottled gas. The ability to run on propane will come in handy for owners whose homes have no mains fuel.
- No coolant. There is no need to equip the pipeline, and in winter, during the downtime, there is no risk of freezing of the liquid. Local convection heating is convenient for garages and small cottages.
- Environmental friendliness. Devices with a coaxial pipe and a closed combustion chamber do not burn oxygen out of living quarters.
But there are also some downsides.For example, not everyone likes the dimensions of heating appliances - you can find more compact electrical counterparts on sale. For residential premises, it is preferable to buy wall-mounted models that take up less usable space.
If a room in the house is not thermally insulated enough, has several windows or doors to adjacent rooms, it is difficult to arrange full heating - there will also be cold areas
The steel heat exchanger, which is typical for inexpensive models, cools quickly, thereby reducing the heating efficiency.

Main criteria for choosing the best floor convector

In order to determine the best floor convectors, it is necessary to establish criteria that will help you make the right choice.
At the same time, it is extremely important to understand the main advantages of radiators built into the floor, since how effectively they are implemented in a particular model from a particular manufacturer is the main argument to rank this heating device among the best
Advantages of water floor convectors
The following characteristics can be distinguished as the most important advantages of floor convectors, which will become the main criteria for determining the most efficient heating devices:
saving room space;
the ability to use in combination with panoramic glazing that is popular today;
reducing the cost of finishing the premises;
operating efficiency of the heating system;
giving the interior of the room a stylish and modern look;
versatility, allowing the use of floor convectors in buildings of various types - residential, public or commercial.
The listed advantages, which are typical for floor-mounted radiators, should be considered first of all when it is necessary to get an answer to the question of which floor convectors are better.
At the same time, in most cases it is advisable to take into account only water radiators, since electrical heating devices have a very limited scope and are noticeably inferior in most performance indicators.

Disadvantages of floor-mounted radiators
To highlight the best water floor convectors from the many on the domestic market, it is important to study not only their positive qualities, but also their disadvantages.Their number is not so large, however, serious manufacturers of heating equipment have long learned to minimize the disadvantages of floor-mounted radiators.
Their number is not so large, however, serious manufacturers of heating equipment have long learned to minimize the disadvantages of floor-mounted radiators.
Among the most significant drawbacks, the possibility of dust accumulation and the difficulty in detecting leaks should be noted.
The first minus is in no way connected with the characteristics of a particular convector model and is eliminated by regular regular measures to maintain cleanliness in the room.
To minimize the possibility of leakage, it is required to purchase products from trusted manufacturers, which are distinguished by a high level of reliability and quality.
In addition, it is necessary to regularly inspect the operated convectors, which will allow you to quickly identify possible problems.
Pros and cons
Like any other heating device, the convector has its pros and cons. This applies to both technical characteristics and features of operation. Before making a purchase decision, it is worth familiarizing yourself with some of the nuances that manufacturers rarely talk about.

It is worth saying that the advantages of convector-type heaters are much greater than the disadvantages.
- Safety. This is especially valuable if there are small children or pets in the house. The surface of the convector never heats up, and when it overturns, fire and oil leakage will not occur. Many models have rollover protection and turn off automatically when dropped.
- Environmental friendliness. Convector units do not dry the air and do not burn oxygen like other types of heaters.If you want to make the atmosphere in the room more comfortable, you should choose a model with a humidifier and an air ionizer.
- Profitability. Depends on the type of heater and the heating element used in the appliance. Water appliances are considered the most economical, followed by gas appliances. Electric and infrared options should be used for periodic work.
- Ease of use. Convectors are easy to install, use and maintain. They can be attached to different surfaces (walls, ceiling), installed under a window or simply placed on the floor. They don't take up much space. Individual designer models will become a bright accent of any interior.
- Warming up It is carried out quite quickly and evenly due to the constant mixing of air in the room.
- Durability. Most devices have a 10 year warranty. In this case, the actual service life of the convector is 20-30 years. This is facilitated by the simplicity of the device.
- Silence at work.

Convector-type heaters also have some disadvantages, which would be more correctly attributed to the features of their use.
- Low heating capacity. Convectors are not suitable for the main space heating (at least in Russian latitudes). They are used for additional air heating in the presence of a central heating system or for heating small rooms.
- Raise dust particles from the floor during operation.
- The operation of electric convectors in continuous mode is not very economical. To do this, use a device with a coolant.
- Air drying. This is typical for almost any heating device. Choose water convectors or a model with a built-in humidifier.

Some of them can be mitigated by the right choice of model and the use of a certain type of convector for specific purposes. So, it is advisable to install an electric portable device in a country house, and a water one, installed under the floor, in a large living room.

Calculation of power and gas consumption
The average power of a gas convector can be determined by multiplying the area of \u200b\u200bthe room by a factor that takes into account the type of system and its operating conditions. The general formula looks like:
P = k * S, where:
- P – convector power, kW;
- k is the correction factor;
- S is the area of the room, sq. m.
Correction factor
- taken equal to 0.1 for systems with balloon supply or rooms with good thermal insulation.
- The value k = 0.12 is set in the case when convector heating is the only source of heat in the dwelling and is stably operated during the day.
- If the heating device is mounted in a walk-through or poorly insulated room, as well as in country houses or cottages where residents visit only periodically, take k = 0.15.
But the calculation of gas consumption is a much more time-consuming task. It would seem that it is enough to know the throughput of the burner and multiply it by the operating time, but the fact is that this will not allow taking into account factors such as:
- fuel pressure in a cylinder or line;
- the initial temperature of the external and internal environment;
- intensity of gas supply to the burner;
- thermostat threshold;
- the time during which the thermostat will keep the burner off (room cooling time).
Which is better to choose a wall-mounted gas heating boiler: types and best producers.
Very useful when designing a table for calculating the heat transfer of heating radiators.
Since these factors cannot be predicted, the minimum gas consumption is selected from summary tables.
Here are some values that the Uzhgorod gas convector demonstrates:
- power of 2 kW - 0.13 cubic meters. meters per hour;
- power of 2.5 kW - 0.15 cubic meters. meters per hour;
- power of 3 kW - 0.2 cubic meters. meters per hour;
- power of 4 kW - 0.23 cubic meters. meters per hour;
- power of 5 kW - 0.29 cubic meters. meters per hour.
Products from other manufacturers of similar power have approximately the same consumption. In the process of warming up a cold room, it increases one and a half to two times, but if the convector is used exclusively to maintain the temperature, the minimum flow rates are reduced by another 35-50%.
Features of gas convectors
For the operation of gas convectors, both natural and liquefied gas are used. To change the fuel, it is only necessary to readjust the gas valve. The gas convector is also used as a main or backup source of heat (the temperature in the room can warm up to 38 degrees). The power of the equipment ranges from 2 to 6 kW.

The main advantage of gas convectors is efficiency. This device reduces heat loss to zero, thereby saving on space heating.
The disadvantage is the need to punch holes in the walls to remove the chimney and create an extensive gas distribution system around the house, in the case of working on main gas.
Air temperature control methods
Any modern convector allows you to set the desired temperature in the room. For this purpose, thermostats are provided in their design.They are mechanical and electronic, plug-in devices and built-in equipment.
A mechanical thermostat is simple and cheap, it may have characteristic clicks during operation, but it ensures stable operation of the device under conditions of voltage drops. The temperature must be set and controlled manually.
The electronic thermostat provides temperature control with the help of sensors, reacting to its change in automatic mode. He is absolutely silent. It can be built-in and remote. The smartest controllers can be controlled remotely.

A programmable thermostat can maintain the required air temperature depending on the time of day and day of the week. Touch control makes the operation of the device as comfortable as possible
The following article will help you get a complete picture of the pros and cons of convectors, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of convector appliances in comparison with fan heaters.
Choosing a gas convector
First you need to decide on the type of fuel:
- natural gas
- liquefied gas
What fuel is more available in the area of \u200b\u200byour house, we buy that convector
It is also necessary to pay attention to the length of the flue pipe so that its length is not less than the thickness of the wall in which you will make a hole. Of course, if necessary, you can contact a specialist to increase the length of the pipe, then this is an additional cost. Gas convectors are:
Gas convectors are:
- with fan
- without fan

Gas convectors should only be installed by qualified specialists.With proper installation and operation in accordance with the instructions, your gas convector will become a profitable, comfortable and safe heater.
The device and principle of operation of the gas convector
How does a conventional water convector work? This is the most common steel, cast iron, aluminum or bimetallic radiator connected to the heating system. Hot coolant enters the convector, after which the equipment starts to heat the atmospheric air. An electric convector is arranged in approximately the same way, only instead of a coolant, electricity comes here, and not through pipes, but through wires.

Gas convector device.
How does a gas convector work and what is this unusual device? The heating gas convector is an autonomous heating device that generates heat due to the built-in gas burner. The resulting heat is released into the atmosphere, as a result of which the room is heated. But these convectors cannot be called completely autonomous - after all, they can also work from main gas. Another thing is that such heating does not require laying pipes with a coolant and installing a gas boiler.
Gas convectors for heating have a relatively simple device. Inside we will find:
- gas burner;
- closed (rarely open) combustion chamber;
- heating control circuit;
- air heat exchanger;
- security systems.
All this is dressed in a pleasant-looking case. The equipment turns out to be compact, but a little bulky - after all, there is a full-fledged gas burner and an impressive heat exchanger inside.

The air heated in the heat exchanger tends to rise, and cold air fills its place.
The principle of operation of a gas convector is very simple - natural or liquefied gas enters the burner, ignites and heats the finned heat exchanger, and the combustion products are removed outside with the help of a fan. When heated, the air rises and exits the room. Colder air masses take its place. A continuous convection is created, in which almost all the air in the room takes part.
The thermostat controls the operation of the burner, which analyzes the air temperature in the room. It is he who turns on or off the gas burner, maintaining the set temperature.
These devices are used to heat buildings for various purposes - it can be residential premises, small offices, utility rooms and much more. Also available are compact gas convectors for summer cottages, having a minimum size and designed to heat rooms of a small area. A common feature of all such convectors is that they heat the air in only one room - if you need to heat two or three rooms, you will have to buy two or three convectors.
Focus on safety
Since the convector belongs to electrical appliances that work for a sufficiently long amount of time, then when buying, it will not be out of place to pay attention to the safety parameters. One of them is overheating protection. : This function allows you to forcibly turn off the device when the temperature of its heating reaches a certain maximum
: This function allows you to forcibly turn off the device when its heating temperature reaches a certain maximum.
In addition, it is important that the device is safe directly for the user and does not shock him, so the electrical protection class
must be at least two. Also, the convector must have a certaindust and moisture protection : This rating is referred to as IP, and should be at the level of IP24, which means that the device will withstand splashing water and will also function normally in a humid environment.
Heating elements of monolithic type
Heating elements of a monolithic type are used for a convector with a degree of protection IP 24. A nichrome thread filled with a dielectric material is installed in them. All the "stuffing" is packed in a cast aluminum case with metal fins.
During heating and cooling, each part of the monoblock increases and narrows in volume. This feature avoids friction, as well as the development of microcracks. A good monolithic convector is silent, very reliable and durable. The monolithic body minimizes the intermediate heat loss and also reduces the heating of the rib structure.

Alpine Air NGS-20F

This is a great choice for a private houses or cottageswhere there is no separate room for a gas boiler or there is little space for installing a heater. The Alpine Air NGS-20F gas heater is wall-mounted and delivers amazing efficiency. With a power of 1.9 kW, the device is able to heat a room up to 38 m2. The main advantage of this model relative to competitors is durability.The device is equipped with a cast-iron heat exchanger, the life of which is at least 50 years. All your electronics may fail, but for the next 50 years you should not be afraid for the heat exchanger.
Gas convector Alpine Air NGS-20F 2.2 kW
Flaws:
combustion products are brought out into the street through a special coaxial tube, which must be taken out of the room
Rational solution: gas convector
Gas convectors work on natural (main) or liquefied (cylinder) gas. They do not require a power source, except for those models that are equipped with a fan to improve air circulation.
But even without electricity, such devices work quietly - just the fan does not spin. Units are usually used as the main heating devices, but can also play an auxiliary role.

Gas convectors are usually chosen for private houses or outbuildings with a small total area. This is the best solution for
Advantages and disadvantages of equipment
Among the important advantages of gas convector heaters, in addition to "electronic independence", it is worth highlighting the following points:
- these devices are not afraid of frost, they can be safely left in unheated houses;
- products are safe: the gas supply in a critical situation is automatically stopped.
A significant advantage lies in the simplicity of the device, due to which the devices are quite reliable and delight with high efficiency.
The equipment also has disadvantages:
- despite their small size, gas convectors are usually difficult to successfully fit into the interior;
- you need to "hollow" the wall for a coaxial gas outlet.
A significant disadvantage is that the gas unit cannot simply be taken and “weighed” the device to another place.
Construction of a gas convector
The gas heater consists of the following units:
Metal case. It is covered with heat-resistant paint. The top and bottom are open for air circulation.
Finned heat exchanger. Heats up the air. The larger it is, the faster the temperature in the room rises.
Burner. This is where gas is burned.
combination valve. Responsible for regulating the flow of gas into the burner.
Chimney. Removes smoke from the device
Not all manufacturers include a chimney in the scope of delivery - you should pay attention to this when choosing equipment.
Thermostat. Element for controlling the operation of the combination valve.
Automation
Shut off the gas supply in emergency situations.
Also, the gas convector can be equipped with a fan, remote control (expensive models).

It is possible to talk about the efficiency of gas convectors only if we are talking about installing one or two appliances in the house. Installing equipment in every room is a real ruin
Device Recommendations
The product must be adapted to the pressure in your gas system. The required power of the gas convector is calculated according to the well-known formula - for every 10 square meters. m of the site of the room requires 1 kW of heat. It would not be superfluous to add 1 kW to the obtained value for poor-quality insulation or old windows.
According to the mounting method, the devices can be wall-mounted and floor-mounted. The first ones are lighter and more compact, have sufficient power; it is usually recommended to opt for them.
A very important parameter when choosing a gas heater is the material from which its heat exchanger is made, it can be:
- cast iron;
- aluminum;
- steel.
The cast-iron heat exchanger evenly warms up, has a fairly high efficiency, is able to work for half a century. But since cast iron is a brittle material, under certain conditions (for example, a large temperature difference), it can burst. In addition, this design is heavy.
Aluminum heat exchangers have excellent thermal conductivity, but their heat resistance is low. The devices equipped with them have a high cost.
Steel heat exchanger is the best option. On a number of characteristics it, certainly, concedes to "competitors". But it is strong, light and cheap.
A good bonus in the design of a gas convector is the presence of a fan. It reduces the heating time of the room and reduces the risk of heat exchanger burnout, but increases the cost of equipment.

The fan significantly increases the heat output of the heater due to more intensive air supply to and from the heat exchanger
Which convector to choose
If we talk about which heater is better to choose, the answer will be ambiguous. With all the obvious advantages, each type has its drawbacks. For example, a tubular element has the longest glow time. When active, it can make clicking sounds and squeaks caused by the expansion of the structure. In turn, the monolithic element scares away most buyers with its high cost. Not everyone is willing to overpay for a significant degree of protection and minimal heat loss.
The decision on which convector is more efficient should be made based on the characteristics of the heated room.
If the room is not damp, and the rate of air heating does not play a key role, a conventional heating element is best.
However, if it is necessary to constantly maintain comfortable conditions in the room, it would be more correct to give preference to a monolithic element.
An efficient convection system will allow you to save a little on electricity.
You can also turn your attention to the combined type models, like an infrared heater with a convection function. This device combines heating with a heating element and an infrared element, which allows you to quickly heat up the room with little electrical energy consumption.
Experts advise paying attention not only to the heating element. Maximum working power, spatial arrangement, mobility and ergonomics of the body also make a significant contribution to efficiency.
Carefully study the technical characteristics of the device, and you can easily choose the convector that suits you.
