Which boiler is more economical, wall or floor
To find out the energy efficiency of heating devices, it is necessary to analyze their principle of operation and technical characteristics.The main element of any boiler (regardless of type) is a heat exchanger. It is a metal container (often made of non-ferrous metal) through which the water of the heating system circulates. The heat exchanger is connected to the heating unit. For electric models, this is a heating element (tubular electric heater), and for gas models, a special burner.
Electric boiler
The heating element of an electric boiler works on the principle of resistive conversion of electricity into heat. The current flowing through the heater, which has a high resistance, leads to heating of the heating element. From it, heat is transferred to the water in which it is immersed. According to the principle of operation, an electric boiler is the same kettle, but hermetically sealed. In connection with the last feature, the heating element of the heating device is not communicated with the environment and gives off all the heat to the water. Of course, along with it, the boiler body and internal parts heat up, but this heat remains within the room.
Due to its design, an electric boiler with a heating element has an efficiency close to 100%. Almost all the energy consumed by it is converted into heat, providing heating of the room. The exception is the circulation pump: the electrical energy consumed by it is converted into mechanical movements, pumping water through the batteries. Because of this, from the standpoint of physics, the question of which electric boiler is more economical, floor or wall, does not make sense at all. Both of them are arranged identically, and can differ only in the shape and size of the parts. Both types have almost maximum efficiency and are equally good. Therefore, the question of whether to choose a wall-mounted electric boiler, or a floor-standing one, is decided depending on the availability of space in the room.
Gas boiler
Gas boilers are a little more complicated.Since fire and water are incompatible, the heating element is located outside the heat exchanger. It is a burner that acts on the walls of the tank, and water is already heated from them. A visual and simplified analogue of a gas boiler is a saucepan on a gas stove. Gas in the combustion process requires access to oxygen. During combustion, CO2 (carbon dioxide) and a little soot are synthesized from the impurities contained. In order to provide air flow and organize the removal of combustion products, it is necessary to connect the boiler to the environment on the street, using a shaft in the wall or a sleeve.
The gas boiler has a couple of fundamental disadvantages. The heater does not directly contact with water, being located outside, and during combustion it is common for air to move (warm through the pipe goes outside, cold from the street enters the burner). Therefore, the useful efficiency (sorry for the tautology) of a gas boiler will never be close to 100%. Of course, the efficiency of the combustion process itself is always close to 100%: all the gas that entered the nozzles burned out, releasing heat. But part of this heat did not go into the water, but simply flew into the pipe, in the truest sense of this expression. Naturally, the practical efficiency of the device, which also heats the street, will never be equal to one.
Manufacturers are cunning, indicating a coefficient over one (more than 100%) for condensing boilers. Often the numbers reach 105 or even 115%. Such a tricky calculation is explained by the summation of the combustion efficiency with additional percentages from the condensation process. Such a boiler heats water not only with an open fire, but also recovers energy from combustion products. Due to this, part of the heat that flies out into the pipe is returned (and this is up to 30%).Of course, it is wrong to sum it up: it is more correct to subtract the lost heat from non-condensing models, subtracting it from the overall efficiency. But the trick worked, and for many years this has been a well-established calculation method for sellers.
The actual efficiency (the amount of energy that went directly to heat the water) of a gas boiler is lower than stated. For the cheapest single-circuit models without a capacitor, it rarely exceeds 70-80%. Good quality condensing water heaters have an efficiency of up to 95% (almost like electric ones).

You can continue the list of manufacturers for a very long time.All current firms care about the quality and reliability of their products, trying to outperform competitors and cover the maximum number of users.
Parapet boilers
Parapet boilers are also called "smokeless". They do not require a traditional chimney, since the products resulting from the combustion of gas are discharged through a coaxial type chimney arranged in the wall. You can install boilers of this type indoors in almost any convenient place.
Are applied to heating of apartments and houses up to 150 square meters. The power of these devices is from 7 to 15 kW. Parapet boilers, both wall and floor, are produced with one or two heating circuits. Steel heat exchanger. Manufactured from 3mm thick sheet.
The main purpose of all gas boilers is space heating. But in some modern types of this equipment, there is also a water heating function for domestic use. Gas boilers also differ in terms of heat exchanger material, types of chimneys, power and various additional functions. Therefore, before the final choice of a particular device for heating, you must carefully familiarize yourself with all the functionality of the device.
Wall Mounted Boiler Features
The wall-mounted version of the gas boiler is convenient in that it does not take up space in the room. The heating device is powered by electricity, so its operation is carried out only if there is a stable mains voltage. Otherwise, it is necessary to think in advance about connecting an additional source of electricity.

What are the main advantages of a wall-mounted gas boiler:
- The function of heating water in most modern models.Due to the design features, you can additionally provide the family with hot water. Then there is no need to purchase a water heater, which is important for a private house.
- Easy installation. When installing the equipment, you do not need professional skills. You can fix the metal frame on the wall with your own hands.
- Budget price. From a significant selection of models, you can find a suitable and affordable option.
The compact designs of heating appliances do not take up much space on the wall. This means that in conditions of a limited area of \u200b\u200bthe premises, they can be installed in the kitchen. The need for arranging a boiler room is eliminated.
Varieties of natural gas boilers
The division into wall and floor models of boilers is understandable - the first are made in a hinged version, the second are placed on the floor. Those and others are divided into types according to the principle of work:
- Atmospheric. They are equipped with an open combustion chamber where air enters from the room where the gas boiler is located. The name says that the combustion process takes place at atmospheric pressure in the furnace.
- Supercharged (otherwise - turbocharged). They differ in a closed chamber, where air is supplied by forced injection (supercharging) by means of a fan.
- Condensing. These are turbocharged heat generators equipped with a special circular burner and a ring-shaped heat exchanger. The goal is to burn the fuel as efficiently as possible, taking away thermal energy from the water vapor released during combustion, causing it to condense.

Parapet heater in section (left) and scheme of work (right)
Both wall-mounted and floor-standing gas boilers are equipped with steel and cast-iron heat exchangers, where the heat carrier for the water heating system is heated by a burner. In addition, heaters can be equipped with a second water heating circuit for household needs, providing hot water supply to a private house or apartment.

Domestic hot water is heated in a plate or bithermic heat exchanger in the secondary circuit
There is another division of heating units - into single-circuit and double-circuit. To understand what boiler to choose for home heating, we suggest that you first familiarize yourself with their strengths and weaknesses.
Nuances when choosing a gas boiler for heating a private house
The absence or constant malfunctions in the centralized heating and hot water system oblige the owners of country houses and apartments to resort to installing individual autonomous systems. Their key link is the boiler, which, by burning fuel, heats the coolant for the heating system and water for domestic needs.
Many users prefer gas installations, but there are difficulties in the question: which gas boiler to choose. Units operating on gas are economical, because. acts as a fuel. Other options for combustible fuel are more expensive or give much less heat energy.
Another advantage of gas-powered appliances is that their operation does not require constant monitoring. It is enough to connect the installation to the main pipe or cylinder, and it will function smoothly until it uses up all the fuel.
However, in order for the gas boiler to work without failures and malfunctions, you need to correctly select it and carry out high-quality and regular maintenance after the connection is made. Today, there is a wide variety of models on the market that differ in functionality and a number of parameters.
Key points to consider when choosing a gas boiler:
- unit power;
- the number of contours;
- material for the manufacture of the housing and heat exchanger;
- execution type;
- availability of automation for safe operation.

Single loop or double loop?
Hot water supply is necessary in any home, especially during the cold season. The question is how to get this water correctly and most economically. It all depends on the maximum flow in the DHW network, the number of consumers and the simultaneity of their work. Double-circuit heat generators with a flow heat exchanger are relevant when it is necessary to provide 2-3 consumers while turning on no more than 2 taps at the same time.

But what if the consumption and the number of consumers are greater? To do this, there are heat sources with a built-in or remote storage tank. Then, for a certain period of time, the container will provide a sufficiently large amount of hot water prepared in advance. The duration of this segment directly depends on the capacity of the tank.
Oddly enough, to supply a large amount of hot water, the use of double-circuit boilers is not required. On the contrary, you should buy and install a powerful single-circuit heat generator and an indirect heating boiler.Such a scheme is gaining more and more popularity, since it allows you to easily get the right amount of hot water, although the initial investment in equipment is quite high.

It is impossible to say unequivocally which of the boilers is better for all occasions, a lot depends on the operating conditions and the wishes of the user. For example, high-tech wall-mounted boilers are more suitable for apartments and small houses, although they can also be used in cottages with several floors. In turn, a stationary unit is a symbol of reliability and quality factor, but it is absolutely not suitable for an apartment.
Pros and cons
The advantages of floor boilers include:
- no restrictions on the power of the unit;
- strength, reliability of all components and parts;
- ease of installation;
- stability of work, the ability to maintain a given mode regardless of external conditions;
- lack of unnecessary additions;
- powerful models can be connected in a cascade of up to 4 units, forming high-performance thermal units.
The disadvantages of floor structures are:
- large weight, size;
- the need for a separate room;
- for atmospheric models, connection to a common house chimney is required
IMPORTANT!
In addition to a separate room, for floor-standing boilers, it is necessary to provide the possibility of connecting to a vertical chimney or leading a horizontal pipe through the wall.
Types of gas boilers
With open combustion chamber
Boilers with an open combustion chamber use air to maintain the fire, which comes directly from the room with the equipment located there. Removal is carried out using natural draft through the chimney.
Since a device of this type burns a lot of oxygen, it is installed in a non-residential specially adapted room with a 3-fold air exchange.
These devices are absolutely not suitable for apartments in multi-storey buildings, since ventilation wells cannot be used as chimneys.
Advantages:
- simplicity of design and, as a result, low cost of repair;
- no noise during operation;
- a wide range of;
- relatively low cost.
Flaws:
- the need for a separate room and chimney;
- unsuitable for apartments.
With closed combustion chamber
For units with a closed firebox, there is no need for a specially equipped room, since their chamber is sealed and does not come into direct contact with the internal air space.
Instead of a classic chimney, a horizontal coaxial chimney is used, which is a pipe in a pipe - one end of this product is attached to the appliance from above, the other goes out through the wall. Such a chimney works simply: air is supplied through the outer cavity of the two-pipe product, and exhaust gas is removed through the inner hole using an electric fan.
This device can be installed both in apartments and houses, and in any room convenient for operation.
Advantages:
- no need for a special room;
- operational safety;
- relatively high environmental friendliness;
- simple installation;
- ease of use.
Flaws:
- dependence on electricity;
- high noise level;
- High price.
single circuit
A single-circuit boiler is a classic heating device with a local purpose: preparation of a coolant for a heating system.
Its main feature is that in the design, among the many elements, only 2 tubes are provided: one for the entry of cold liquid, the other for the exit of the already heated one. The composition also includes 1 heat exchanger, which is natural, a burner and a pump that pumps the coolant - in the case of natural circulation, the latter may be absent.
When installing hot water, an indirect heating boiler is connected to the CO system - given the possibility of such a prospect, manufacturers produce boilers that are compatible with this drive.
Advantages:
- relatively low fuel consumption;
- simplicity in design, maintenance and repair;
- the possibility of creating hot water using an indirect heating boiler;
- acceptable price.
Flaws:
- used only for heating;
- for a set with a separate boiler, a special room is desirable.
Dual circuit
Double-circuit units are more complicated - one ring is intended for heating, the other for hot water supply. The design can have 2 separate heat exchangers (1 for each system) or 1 joint bithermic. The latter consists of a metal case, an outer tube for CO and an inner tube for hot water.
In the standard mode, water, heating up, is supplied to the radiators - when the mixer is turned on, for example, washing, the flow sensor is triggered, as a result of which the circulation pump turns off, the heating system stops working, and the hot water circuit starts to function. After closing the tap, the previous mode resumes.
Advantages:
- providing hot water to several systems at once;
- small dimensions;
- simple installation;
- affordable cost;
- the possibility of local shutdown of heating for the season "spring-autumn";
- a large selection, including design;
- ease of use.
Flaws:
- DHW flow diagram;
- accumulation of salt deposits in hard water.
Types of floor boilers
Floor gas boilers are manufactured in all known design options. They can be divided into groups according to different criteria.
By functionality:
- single-circuit. They are used only for heating the coolant. When connecting an external boiler, they are able to provide the premises with hot water at the level of centralized water supply;
- double-circuit. Able to prepare hot water for household needs in parallel with heating the coolant.
Heat transfer method:
- convection. Conventional heating of a liquid in a gas burner flame;
- condensation. A two-stage heating of the coolant is carried out - first in the condensation chamber from the heat of the exhausted smoke, and then in the usual way. The design has specific conditions for full-fledged work - either a low-temperature circuit (warm floor) is needed, or the difference between the external and internal temperatures should not exceed 20 °;
- parapet. Units capable of working in small rooms without a heating circuit. There are holes in the body that circulate hot air according to the principle of a convector.
According to the material of the heat exchanger:
- steel. Stainless steel up to 3 mm thick is used;
- copper. As a rule, a coil is installed that has high durability and heat transfer;
- cast iron. They are used on powerful models that need stable and efficient operation of the unit.
By type of power supply:
- volatile. Boilers, in the design of which devices are used that require connection to the network;
- non-volatile. Units that can work without being connected to the mains.
Wall and floor
There are two types of these units - wall and floor gas boilers. Both one and the other are divided into the following types (depending on the principle of operation):
- Naturally aspirated or naturally aspirated. Their main feature is an open combustion chamber into which the air mixture enters directly from the air.
- Supercharged (supercharged, turbocharged). In them, the firebox is closed, and the air mixture is fed into it using a special supercharger (fan).
- Using the principle of condensation (condensation). They are pressurized and burn fuel most efficiently, and heating occurs due to the removal of thermal energy from the heated steam, which then condenses.
The design of gas boilers of both types necessarily includes heat exchange units, the material for their manufacture is cast iron or steel.
Modern models are also equipped with a second circuit, which is used to supply hot water for domestic needs.
To understand which boiler is best suited for a particular room - with one circuit or with two, you need to familiarize yourself with their strengths and weaknesses.
The best models with a built-in boiler
In fact, these boilers are a 2-in-1 system. The circuit with an expansion tank works to heat the room, and the storage boiler stores hot water for household needs. All this is placed in one case, which is why such boilers turn out to be very overall.

106% for condensing boilers
Sectional view of a condensing boiler
When choosing gas boilers, you may catch the eye of condensing models, which are famous for their high efficiency. We talked about the device of these models in a separate article. Here we will tell you in what cases it is worth buying them.
It is important to understand the main thing - not one boiler can produce an efficiency above 100%. But manufacturers often like to write about 106% efficiency (the last figure can be anything)
Therefore, you should not pay attention to this indicator. The same principle applies here as was announced earlier - all condensing boilers have a similar efficiency, higher than traditional ones, but below 100%
You should buy them only if you use low-temperature heating systems. Such as, for example, underfloor heating. It is at low temperature operation that savings are achieved. In other modes, the behavior is the same as for traditional boilers.
Conclusion
Wall and floor gas boilers perform the same functions, differing only in the method of installation and size.They provide the premises with heat and hot water, create a comfortable and cozy microclimate.
The whole difference lies in the compactness and light weight of wall-mounted models and power, the increased capabilities of floor-standing boilers. There are no fundamental structural differences between them; the choice is usually made based on the size and configuration of the serviced premises.
Most users are guided by their needs and financial capabilities, trying to get the best option for a source of thermal energy at an affordable price.
