Types of gas heaters
Gas convectors
Such heaters can have a closed and open combustion chamber. Closed-type models for gas combustion take air from the street and remove combustion products there through a special pipe laid through the wall. They are well suited for home or summer cottages and can become an alternative to a gas boiler. Open chamber models are not very suitable for living spaces or require the use of a vertical chimney.
Catalytic gas heaters
Devices of this type work by oxidizing substances on the surface of the catalyst, which releases a large amount of heat. The process is almost silent and without flame. The catalytic combustion method is more reliable, efficient and safer than conventional infrared heaters.
Ceramic gas heaters
By analogy with electrical counterparts, such heaters work due to directional thermal radiation and heat not the air, but the surfaces of walls, objects, as well as people present in the room. Only a gas burner acts as a heating source. The use of ceramic plates makes it possible to achieve complete combustion of fuel and eliminate harmful emissions.
Thermal gas guns
They have a cylindrical shape and work on the principle of a fan heater, in which a gas heat generator plays the role of a heating element. They work from bottled gas, and the power is usually regulated by a gearbox.

Which gas heater is better to buy
If for some reason your workshop, garage or country house does not have a stationary heating system, you need to think about a mobile heat source. Electric heaters are expensive to operate, and the power grid is far from being available everywhere. In such a situation, a liquefied gas cylinder with a gas heater will be the best solution to the problem. The user will only need to strictly follow the instructions of the manufacturer of such equipment, do not forget about the need to comply with fire safety rules and ensure stable ventilation.
Types of gas heaters
The operation of a typical gas heater is based on the combustion of liquefied petroleum gas. It comes through a flexible hose from a standard cylinder through a reduction gear. Oxygen is taken from the surrounding air.
There is no need to equip a special chimney to remove combustion products. Their number is small.In some gas heaters, the content of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere is monitored by a gas analyzer, which will stop the gas supply to the burner long before the maximum concentration is reached. In practice, it turned out that the operation of natural exhaust ventilation is sufficient to prevent this from happening.
According to their design features, gas heaters for interior spaces are divided into two large groups:
- gas panels
- gas ovens
Gas panels
Gas panels are mobile devices. They are made of lightweight materials, have small dimensions and an open design. Such devices consist of:
- a wide heating element, protected by a protective grille;
- frames or stands with a stable base that reduces the risk of accidental tipping.
Gas heater powered by a small cylinder.
Gas heater powered by a large cylinder.
The gas cylinder must be installed aside at a safe distance. Heat transfer from a flameless burner is carried out in all possible ways: heat transfer, convective transfer of air masses and infrared radiation. The heating power is usually controlled manually by a valve. Such a heater is quite quickly able to raise the air temperature in a room, garage or small workshop.
gas ovens
The gas oven has a stable housing made of durable materials. A liquefied gas cylinder is placed inside it. To increase mobility, the entire structure has rollers or wheels. The heat source is ceramic panels mounted on the front wall of the device.
The choice of operating mode is carried out using the control unit.Most models from well-known manufacturers are equipped with automatic rollover protection. Such heaters usually develop high power and are able to maintain a comfortable temperature in large residential or utility rooms.
How to choose the heater power
The main technical characteristic of the heater is power.
It must match:
- the size of the heated room;
- the degree of insulation of the building;
- climatic conditions.
All these indicators are taken into account when calculating according to a simplified formula:
Q=V*dt*K
where:
- Q - the minimum thermal power of the purchased heater (kcal / hour);
- V is the total volume of the heated room (m3);
- dt is the difference in air temperatures inside and outside the house (оС);
- K is a coefficient that takes into account heat loss through the outer walls of the building.
The value of K is taken:
- 3.0-4.0 for thin-walled pavilions, garages and outbuildings;
- 2.0-2.9 for brick buildings with walls one brick thick;
- 1.0-1.9 for brick cottages with two-brick exterior walls, an attic or an insulated roof;
- 0.6-0.9 for well-insulated buildings.
For example, let's calculate the minimum heater power for a small workshop located in a separate brick building with two-brick walls. Room length 12 m, width 6 m, height 3 m.
Workshop volume 12 * 6 * 3 = 216 m3.
Let's assume that the workshop is used during the daytime. We believe that in winter during the day the air temperature in this area rarely drops below -15 ° C. The temperature that is comfortable for work is +20 ° C. The difference is 35 ° C. The coefficient K is taken equal to 1.5.
Calculating the minimum power gives:
216 * 35 * 1.5 \u003d 11340 kcal / hour.
1 kcal/hour = 0.001163 kW. Multiplying this value by 11340, we get the desired power of 13.2 kW. If during work you often have to open the entrance gate, then it is better to purchase a 15 kW heater.
Features of ceramic heaters
The devices are unique in their combination of infrared and convection heating methods. This allows you to reduce the financial costs of the heat source.
When buying, you should pay attention to some points
Different types of accommodation
Wall mounted on the wall with brackets, fit perfectly into the interior of any room, do not take up extra space.
Desktop models are used for local heating of part of the room.
Ceiling heaters, on the contrary, cover a large space. IR radiation heats the floor and objects below, which then give off heat.
Device power

With the same area, a room with high ceilings warms up longer, it needs more power.
Manufacturers of ceramic heaters claim that due to the energy efficiency of such devices, 10 watts is enough. For large areas, I install several powerful panels.
All models heat up the panel to a certain temperature set by the manufacturer, then the heat source is turned off.
For ease of use, thermostatic programmers are installed. With their help, the temperature that changes during the day will be maintained, allowing rational use of resources. For example, during the day when there is no one at home, there is no need for +22°C, you can set a lower temperature.
Advantages of electric and gas heaters made of ceramics

- Compactness.
- Ease of use, does not require complex installation.
- Energy efficiency.
- Comfort of use. Additional features such as remote control and some others enhance the user-friendliness.
- Versatile stylish design. All manufacturers offer several colors. This allows you to use it in rooms of various purposes and styles.
Cons of electric and gas ceramic heaters
The main disadvantage of this type of heaters is the high price.
The cost of domestic ceramic panels is commensurate with the best models of recognized world-class brands.
Ceramic heaters are new generation appliances. They are simple and effective, versatile and comfortable. Despite the high price, received consumer recognition. It is the cost that is the constraint for wider distribution.
Pros and cons of catalytic devices
Like any type of equipment, catalytic heaters have a number of advantages and disadvantages that must be considered when choosing.
Devices have many positive aspects:
- compactness and light weight - the dimensions and convenient design of most models make it easy to move and install devices, portable options fit easily into the trunk of a car or a small hiking bag;
- environmental friendliness - due to the fact that the heaters do not emit harmful combustion products and unpleasant odors, a healthy microclimate is maintained in the room, the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is completely absent;
- safety - the absence of a flame during operation eliminates the likelihood of a fire, the device can be safely used in a house, in a tent, in a warehouse, in an industrial workshop;
- efficiency - operating at full capacity, the devices consume 100-300 g of fuel per hour, in many models the performance can be adjusted;
- availability of fuel - a cylinder can be easily purchased or filled with gas at any gas station;
- simplicity of the device - the design is devoid of complex mechanisms, everything is arranged as simply and clearly as possible.
But there are also negative nuances. The most significant disadvantage is the limited service life. Although marketers claim that the plate is able to work up to 8 years, in practice, according to a number of users, the terms do not exceed 2500 hours, which is associated with the gradual burnout of the catalyst during the heating process.
If the device is used around the clock, the catalyst resource will be exhausted after about 5 months of operation. The expediency of replacing a failed plate is doubtful: it will cost 2/3 of the price of a new device.
The second drawback is a serious dependence on the quality of the fuel mixture. Poorly refined fuel affects the efficiency of heating and shortens the life of the equipment, quickly making it unusable.
Many consumers attribute the high cost of catalytic gas appliances to the disadvantages. On average, a heater of this type with a power of 2900 W costs about 11,000 rubles.
It is undesirable to place catalytic equipment in bedrooms, rooms with high humidity, near flammable objects. Do not dry wet shoes and clothes on it
Despite the safety of catalytic equipment, during use it is necessary to adhere to the operating rules recommended by the manufacturer.

Classification of energy-saving ceramic heaters
Ceramic heaters are divided into several types.
Gas
Gas appliances are arranged on the principle of an infrared emitter. The flame of a propane-butane burner heats the ceramic honeycombs of the working element up to 900 ° C, and it heats the surrounding objects with radiant heat. They work on bottled or main gas supply.
Gas heaters burn oxygen, so it is unacceptable to use them for heating premises of permanent residence. Such devices are used in country houses, on open verandas, on hikes. Separate models, equipped with additional protection and filters, are used to maintain the required room temperature during repair and construction work.
Reference. Gas heaters are cheaper than electric ones, but consume a lot of fuel. Even small specimens consume 0.2-0.5 kg of gas per hour.
The camping option is suitable not only for heating, but also for cooking. The portable ceramic gas heater has a power of up to 3 kilowatts, is capable of heating up to 30 m2 of space, weighs less than 2 kilograms, and is comparable in size to traditional tourist tiles. The price of budget models starts from 700 rubles.

Photo 2. Gas ceramic heater from the manufacturer Timberk. The device is floor type, the heating element is protected by a grill.
Electrical
Electric heaters are based on a heating element heated from the network, the heat from which is transferred to ceramic plates. This design is used in convectors, emitters, hybrid equipment. Electrical appliances are used in apartments, country houses, less often - in summer cottages. Like gas, they are portable and stationary.
A separate category is car mini-heaters powered by a cigarette lighter, used to defrost the windshield of a car.
All ceramic heaters are also divided into floor, wall and desktop.
floor standing
Floor stoves are mobile, which allows you to place them anywhere: next to window and door openings (to get rid of drafts), in the center of the room, at the desktop.
These heaters are more powerful than wall-mounted ones. They are equipped with tilt sensors that turn off the device at a certain deviation from the vertical. Advanced models have a swivel base that allows you to heat the whole room, remote control, tangential fans, etc.
wall panels
Wall convectors are installed at the bottom of the wall as close to the floor as possible - hot air will rise longer, giving more heat to the room.
Attention! Hanging such heaters from the ceiling is not recommended, as this violates the optimal operation of the convector. Wall-mounted fan heaters are larger than floor-standing ones.
Outwardly, they resemble a split-system air conditioner. The direction of the air flow is regulated by special curtains, which are controlled remotely

During operation, the surface does not heat up above 90 °C. A variety of patterns and textures are placed on the panel, which allows you to organically fit the heater into the interior. The service life of such a device reaches 25 years.
Desktop
Table heaters are easy to install. They are compact, mobile, suitable for placement in any convenient place.
They are equipped with a tipping sensor, a propeller and a swivel mechanism, which allows you to heat the entire room. Some models have a fan function (no heating). The main disadvantage of this design is a noisy propeller.
Tips for Potential Buyers
When using gas equipment, strictly adhere to the basic safety rules. Before starting the device, carefully study the manufacturer's instructions and follow the recommendations indicated there.
Buy branded gas cylinders of famous brands. Saving on fuel quality in the future may result in equipment failure, fire or other unpleasant consequences
Switch on the gas appliance in enclosed spaces only if there is adequate ventilation. Even the highest quality device in the process of work emits combustion products that adversely affect a person.
To avoid problems, do not leave the unit unattended for a long time and do not go to bed in a room heated by gas appliances
Reasonable care and attention will allow you to fully operate the equipment without having any problems with it.
We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with the rules for the use of gas cylinders in everyday life.

This is what you need to pay attention to first of all. Based on the presented aspects, a rating of quality devices was created
Gas heater for summer cottages: advantages and disadvantages
If you do not live in the country permanently, but only occasionally go there to relax for a few days, then natural gas heaters for the home will be the best solution to the issue of heating. They have an affordable price, are very mobile and are able to heat quite large rooms.
The device of a gas heater involves the use of natural gas as a power source. As a result of combustion, it releases heat, which, together with infrared radiation, is transferred to surrounding objects. In turn, they give the received heat to the air.

A gas heater is able to heat a fairly large area
Advantages of using household gas heaters for summer cottages:
- high efficiency, which reaches 80%;
- only natural gas or liquefied propane is required to power the equipment, which can be called almost the most affordable option available today;
- such heaters are environmentally friendly;
- due to its light weight and dimensions, the device can be easily transported;
- equipment is extremely easy to install and manage;
- the service life is quite large: from 15 to 30 years;
- high level of safety: the body does not heat up above 60 ° C, which eliminates the risk of burns or fire;
- this method of heating is very economical, since the gas cylinder can be filled at any gas station, and fuel consumption occurs gradually.

When heating with a heater, warm air circulates indoors
All these qualities make gas heaters for the home almost indispensable. After all, on the one hand, you get rid of the need to install an expensive and complex heating system, and on the other hand, you provide yourself with a reliable and compact source of heat.
Among the shortcomings of this type of equipment, only two significant points can be noted:
- In order to release heat into the environment, gas devices require oxygen. As a result, in the room where such a device is installed, oxygen burning will occur quite quickly.
- No matter how hard you try, bottled gas heaters for summer cottages will never be absolutely safe in terms of the likelihood of fire. One way or another, we are talking about the use of an explosive substance that can lead to a fire. Therefore, it is necessary to strictly follow the rules of operation.

For normal operation of the gas heater, it is necessary to provide a constant supply of oxygen
These shortcomings, although significant, have little effect on the popularity of this type of device. After all, if you provide additional oxygen access to the room where the heater is installed, as well as follow the operating rules specified by the manufacturer, then you will get a convenient and functional device that will last for quite a long time.
Application
Thanks to the cases protected from overheating and a reliable design, it is advisable to operate the devices even in kindergartens and other places where small children stay.

In addition, the use of ceramic heaters is appropriate:
- in hotel rooms and hostels;
- in educational institutions (premises of schools, colleges, colleges, universities);
- in offices;
- in shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment establishments.
The versatility of the devices is due to their actual minimalistic design. They do not attract attention, but at the same time organically fit into different interiors.
Peculiarities
A gas heater for a summer residence is one of the many types of heating devices that can work both indoors and, with certain reservations, on the street. Not all consumers immediately prefer gas models, doubting for a long time and choosing between them and their electric and kerosene competitors, and rightly so - first you need to understand what kind of technology it is, and what are its positive and negative sides.
Such comparisons usually start with good qualities, so let's consider why a gas appliance is the best solution for summer cottages.To begin with, it should be noted that gas in our country is relatively inexpensive, and for the consumer this is a huge plus - heating rooms or verandas will be very cheap. In addition, gas heaters, depending on the model, can be connected directly to the pipe, that is, they can be stationary, or operate from a cylinder, which makes the unit portable. Of course, the advantages do not end there, and here are the characteristics that stand out among other features:
- the mechanism of the gas heater is extremely simple - there is not a single complex unit here, and therefore there is practically nothing to wear out and break, and this is a big plus for the durability of the product;
- in terms of efficiency, gas models of heaters are definitely among the leaders - you will pay a penny for their work, but the result will not be as modest as it might seem;
- the typical gas-powered design is small and, if it is a balloon model, can be easily moved to where you need it - figuratively speaking, you can even take it with you on night fishing;
- despite the fact that harmful substances are still released during the combustion of gas, this is the most environmentally friendly of all known types of fuel - only solar energy is cleaner;
- the operation of the unit is extremely simple - although it is undesirable for children to use gas appliances, even a child could master the controls.
In terms of heating rate, gas models are somewhat inferior to electric counterparts, but in an enclosed space, and even with regular heating, you will not see a fundamental difference, except for reduced operating costs.As it should be in climate technology, each device has a built-in mechanism for adjusting the heating mode. Manufacturers do not forget to take care of fire safety, so most products, except for the cheapest ones, have built-in mechanisms for blocking the gas supply if the fire goes out, as well as a tilt sensor. Given the simplicity of the design and the minimum number of parts in it, we can expect that the device will serve the owner for at least ten years.
From the foregoing, a picture of some ideal heater is formed, but it is not worth considering a gas appliance as such, otherwise it would have no alternatives and competitors. At a minimum, gas is a very flammable and explosive substance, and no manufacturer can give an absolute guarantee that there will be no leakage under any circumstances. The "escaped" gas instantly ignites from the slightest spark, and with a large amount of it in a closed room, its sharp expansion provokes a powerful explosion. Of course, most consumers still avoid such a development of events - for this it is worth observing elementary security measures, not leaving the unit turned on when the adult owners are not at home. But even here, the potential disadvantages do not end there - some other factors should be considered:
- a leak is dangerous not only with a potential explosion, but also in itself - unburned gas displaces oxygen from the atmosphere, and if for some reason you don’t smell, you won’t even understand what is the reason for your sharply worsened state of health;
- even if the gas burns normally and there are no leaks, the combustion process itself intensively burns out the oxygen in the room, instead forming carbon dioxide - without productive ventilation, a person will at best feel a noticeable malaise.
