How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedurewall tiles

In order to calculate the required number of wall tiles, you need to find out the perimeter of the bathroom: (1.73 + 1.73) 2 = 6.92 m, rounded up to 7 m.Now, knowing the length of one tile, they calculate how many pieces will be laid in one row along the perimeter of the room 7 / 0.2 = 35 pieces. The layout of the tiles in this case implies a dark bottom, it is usually raised to a height of about 1 m. But since trimming is useless here, the height may vary depending on the dimensions of the selected tile: 1 / 0.3 = 33, three rows will be the best option.

Determine the total number of dark tiles in three rows: 35 × 3 = 105, add 3 pieces per battle, total - 108 dark tiles. Dark and light tiles are usually separated by a border. The length of the frieze in this case is similar to the length of the tile - 0.2 m, but it fits only in one row, that is, 35 elements are required to lay out the border around the perimeter.

Now you need to calculate the number of rows of light tiles and its total number. It is known that the height of the room is 2.6 m, the height of the dark layer is 0.9 m, and the height of the curb is 00.8 m. It turns out 2.6 - 0.9 - 00.8 = 1.62 m - the height of the light layer. The resulting number is divided by the height of the tile and the number of rows is 1.62 / 0.3 = 5.4, that is, 5 rows of a whole tile and trimming under the ceiling.

Find out the total number of light tiles 35 × 5.4 = 189. In this case, the number does not need to be rounded to 6, since in the last row less than half of one tile is cut. 4 spare tiles are also added to the total. The layout of the tiles implies the presence of decors in a bright area, a total of 3 pieces on three walls and 2 elements on a wall with a doorway. Total: (3×3)+2=11 elements. This number must be subtracted from the total number of light tiles 193-11=182.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedureDark bottom, light top - classic

When calculating wall tiles, do not forget about the presence of a doorway, its height is 2 m, width is 0.7 m.A certain number of tiles can be safely subtracted from the total number and save a little. First, they find out how many whole tiles fit on the height of the opening in one row: 2 / 0.3 = 6.6, here they are rounded down - 6 pcs. Now the number of tiles per door width is counted: 0.7 / 0.2 = 3.5, also rounded down - 3 tiles.

It is known that the height of the dark layer is 3 rows, 3×3=9 tiles of dark color. The frieze has the same length as the tile, so 3 elements can fit in the width of the doorway. Now the number of rows of solid light tiles is calculated (2-0.9-0.08)/0.3=3.4, i.e. 3 rows of light tiles. Determine the number of light tiles that can be subtracted: 3 × 3 = 9 pcs. Similarly, the amount of excess tiles is determined for window openings, as well as for areas that will not be lined, for example, behind a bathroom.

Final result

 • Floor tiles will be required - 36 pcs.;
 • Dark tiles - 94 pieces + 3 spare;
 • Light tiles - 169 pieces + 4 pieces. spare;
 • Friezes - 32 pieces + 1 pc. in reserve;
 • Decors - 11 pcs. + 1 spare.

Advice! Among the more modern and convenient methods of calculation, software is now especially popular. Online services allow the user not only to calculate the number of tiles and consumables, but also to create a 3D visualization of the bath with a future layout. The only problem is that some manufacturers and collections may not be in the program database.

Seam width

The sutures can be from 1 to 10 millimeters wide. It depends on the type, geometry and size of the tile used. As a rule, the width of the seam is 2 millimeters.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure
The grouting process

When performing the correct layout, the width and length of the seams can be ignored.

For example, there is a wall 1.5 meters long and a tile 0.4 meters long. Action algorithm:

 1. Measure the length of the wall - 1.5 meters.
 2. Calculate how many meters you can cover with whole uncut tiles: 0.4 * 3 = 1.2 meters.
 3. Subtract one tile: 1.2 - 0.4 = 0.8.
 4. Subtract this size from the length of the wall: 1.5 - 0.8 = 0.7 meters.
 5. Divide into two parts, because the tile will be cut twice at the same edges: 0.7 / 2 = 0.35 meters.
 6. Laying should start from the center.
 7. Lay two tiles of 0.8 meters and two cut tiles on the edge - 0.35 meters. It will turn out 1.5 m. Even if the seams reach one centimeter, this will not change anything. The undercuts will only get a little smaller.

Video description

In this video, a master class on how to correctly calculate the tiles for the bathroom:

Briefly about the main

Before buying ceramic tiles, you need to calculate the right amount of material so that it is enough for the entire area of the room. This can be done in two ways: manually and using an online calculator.

The amount of ceramics required for repairs is affected by the area of the room, the dimensions of the doors, windows and bathroom, the type of installation, the number of colors of the finishing material and other factors.

5 methods are used to count tiles for the floor: methods by the area of the room and by the number of rows, counting with diagonal laying and the piece by piece method, combined calculation.

If you do not want to carry out the calculations yourself, you can contact the store manager when purchasing the material. It will help to calculate the required amount of materials for the room. To do this, you will need to first measure the room.

We consider the consumption of glue

In addition to the number of tiles, before starting repair work, the amount of glue needed should also be calculated.The indicator will be significantly affected by the quality of the subfloor, the method of laying, as well as the quality of the tile itself. And, of course, the experience of the master. For beginners, the consumption of the adhesive component is usually higher than for experienced professionals.

Tile adhesive consumption can also be calculated

Table

What affects glue consumption and why is it important to consider these factors?

Factor Explanations

Tile porosity

The glue will not only be on the surface of the ceramic product, but will also partially penetrate the structure. Also, such tiles usually absorb moisture from the adhesive more strongly.

Uneven subfloor

Cracks, chips, irregularities can significantly increase consumption, since it is with glue that all identified voids will be filled, and in places with uneven glue, you will have to spread a lot. If the floor height difference is not more than 3 mm, then a small amount of glue can still be used. But the more curved the base, the more glue will be spent. Otherwise, it will not be possible to make an even floor covering.

Uneven tile surface

The voids present on the reverse side of the ceramic product will also be filled with adhesive at the time of its application.

Floor element dimensions

The larger the tile, the more adhesive it needs. For example, when laying ceramics measuring 10x10, the thickness of the adhesive layer should be about 2 mm. With a tile size of 20x30 cm, this layer will reach 3 mm. If the ceramic is even larger, then the adhesive is applied in a layer up to 5 mm, but not less than 4 mm.

Dimensions of ceramic tiles

The amount of glue per 1 m2 is calculated as follows: the thickness of the tile is measured and divided by 2, the average value of the consumption of the adhesive composition is taken. The values are multiplied, and the final figure will be equal to the glue consumption. But it is quite approximate, and it is better to buy material with a small margin.

Glue, which is made on the basis of cement, is calculated as follows: the mass of the bag is taken (the best option is to purchase bags of 1.3 kg) and multiplied by the recommended thickness of the glue. The result is a number approximately equal to the consumption of glue. Sometimes you can determine the cost of glue using a calculator.

Tile adhesive calculation

Calculator for calculating the amount of adhesive for laying tiles

Go to calculations

After the tile is laid, it is necessary to draw the seams between the floor elements. For this, a special grout for seams is purchased. It is not difficult to calculate the required amount of this material - for this, the perimeter of one ceramic element is calculated and divided by 2. Then the resulting figure is multiplied by the area of one tile. The final value should be multiplied by the thickness of the ceramic element, and then the new figure is multiplied by the width of the seam that remains between adjacent tiles. The next resulting value is multiplied by the shrinkage factor of the material, equal to 1.5. The result of all these calculations will be the required mass of grout, which will be able to process up to 1 square meter. tiled area

What to look out for

The tile attracts the consumer with quite affordable cost, a very rich choice of design, moisture resistance, durability and absolute environmental friendliness.

Tiles in the bathroom can be laid independently, without the involvement of professional craftsmen, but in order to obtain a high-quality and durable finish, it is very important to determine the exact amount of facing material.A scale drawing of the entire area to be renovated, including all wall and floor surfaces, as well as any other details in the room, helps to easily determine the required number of tiles.

A scale drawing of the entire area to be renovated, including all wall and floor surfaces, as well as any other details in the room, helps to easily determine the required number of tiles.

When calculating, the features of the place of installation, the presence of door or window openings, the dimensions of the finishing elements, as well as the presence in the bathroom of additional areas for the installation of tiled lining are necessarily taken into account.

Location (walls or floor)

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedureAt the stage of calculation, experienced craftsmen carefully measure the surface, calculate the total number of stacked rows, as well as the final number of tile elements for each order.

Based on the measurements taken and the calculations obtained, a suitable layout and the total number of tiles are determined, after which, using a laser level, markings are applied to all surfaces to be faced.

When finishing the floor and walls can be used:

 • direct laying - the easiest and most affordable option, best suited for non-professionals;
 • diagonal cladding - an original option that contributes to the visual expansion of space and well masks the curvature of the floor;
 • staggered finishing is the best way for tiling surfaces with tiles of different colors or shades;
 • offset laying - the method is characterized by a shift of each subsequent row of tiles with the same distance.

Traditional styling, complemented by a variety of inserts, looks very original and elegant.

The presence of a door (window) opening

Before calculating the area of the wall surface, it is necessary to measure the window and door openings, which will allow you to calculate the quadrature of the entire part of the walls treated with tiles. Readings should be taken along the slopes of the openings. The area is calculated by multiplying the height and length.

If there are several windows and doors in the room, then each is measured separately, and the data obtained must be summarized.

Tile size

Tiles produced by domestic and foreign manufacturers differ not only in color and texture, but also in size.

Popular tile formats for bathroom wall cladding:

 • 15x25 cm;
 • 20x25 cm;
 • 33x33 cm;
 • 33x45 cm;
 • 30x60 cm.

In working with the floor surface, elements are used that have dimensions from 25x25 to 600x600 mm. The most popular sizes are 10x10 cm, 15x15 cm and 20x20 cm, as well as 30x30 cm.

For decorating a small bathroom, the most preferred option is to use medium-sized tiles.

Additional elements on which the tile is laid

Particular attention should be paid to additional elements represented by vertical and horizontal edges, as well as other components of the correct design. For example, special borders with a rounded edge are very convenient to use when decorating any horizontal edges, while vertical finishing should be done with special corner elements.

Primary tile calculation

The most important additional elements when laying wall tiles are borders and skirting boards, mirror frames, corner pieces for edge decoration.

Calculation of the bathroom area for finishing with expensive ceramics

From the methodology described above, it can be seen that the calculation of the need for tiles based on the area of the bases to be finished has a significant error. Today, tiles, the price of which is not significant, are used only in utility rooms, and ceramics for bathrooms are chosen from materials of the medium price range and above. Therefore, the expediency of buying, for example, 44 squares of tiles, of which 4 squares constitute a reserve, is not justified. In addition, modern bathrooms are rarely tiled in monotonous ways - both on the floor and on the walls, at least combinations of zones are used, which are finished with tiles of various colors, formats, and textures. A reserve of 10-15% of tiles for each such zone is not justified, therefore, in such premises, the area is used to determine the need for an adhesive mixture or to calculate the payment to the contractor. To calculate the consumption of tiles for such bathrooms, a layout map is drawn on paper, which shows the optimal layout in each zone of a particular type of tile on a scale.

If the cladding option is not too complicated, then the base itself can be drawn in a similar way.

This method allows you to calculate the amount of ceramics with an accuracy of one tile, and, as a margin, add one or two sheets for facing complex areas.

Online calculation of tiles in the bathroom

How to correctly calculate the number of bathroom tiles is now known. But in addition to independent calculation methods, you can calculate the tiles in the bathroom online.
There is a special service for this. How to calculate the tiles in the bathroom calculator can be on the site. The principle of operation of such a calculator is simple and convenient.
The user enters certain parameters of his room, and the program makes a calculation.
However, there are errors in the online calculator. In order to learn how to quickly calculate the tiles for the bathroom, it is quite suitable. Moreover, such a calculation does not require any effort from a person.
But still, it is better to combine bathroom tiles online with self-calculation. It may turn out that the calculations of a person and a calculator will differ. This will allow you to identify the error, correct it, and then the most accurate answer will be received on the question of how to calculate how many tiles are needed for the bathroom.
To calculate how many tiles you need in the bathroom, the calculator will at least help you check the correctness of your own calculations and double-check the correctness of the masters' advice on the volume of material.
Therefore, it makes sense to combine both methods.
How to calculate the size of a bathroom tile, a calculator will also help answer this question, or you can use the self-calculation methods described above.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure

Thus, the question of how to calculate how many tiles are needed in the bathroom involves several answers. In the simplest way, the program will help you calculate the tiles for the bathroom.
How to calculate ceramic tiles in the bathroom yourself is described above. This method is also necessary.
In addition, calculate the number of tiles for the bathroom calculator may be wrong and give an incorrect result. The calculations of the online calculator must be double-checked by calculating everything “manually”.
The main thing is not to forget to purchase tiles for a reserve, as well as to determine the presence or absence of seams.

Calculating the amount of grout

After completion of the laying work, the joints are grouted. To do this, grout is used, both matching in color with the main color of the coating, and contrasting (white for black tiles, etc.).

To calculate the amount of grout for a tile, you need to know the amount of space to be filled. The width of the seam is recommended from 1.5 to 3 mm. To the depth of the seam, approximately equal to the thickness of the tile, you need to apply a factor of 1.5, which will take into account material shrinkage, moisture, etc.

To calculate the volume of grout, divide half the perimeter of 1 tile by its area and multiply by the thickness. Multiply the result by the width of the seam and by 1.5 (coefficient). The result will be the mass (in kg) of grout required for 1 sq.m of coating. For example, with a joint width of 2-3 mm and a tile area of 0.04 sq.m, one kilogram of grout is enough for 3.5 sq.m.

Basic rules for calculating tiles

The calculation algorithm is quite simple. When calculating the exact number of tiles, you will need formulas for determining the perimeter and area of the rectangle.

To calculate the wall area, use the following formula:

Parameters A and B (width and length of the room) alternate depending on the specific area.

The perimeter of a rectangle is calculated by the formula:

Designations in formulas:

 • S - the area of a certain surface in the bathroom, sq.m;
 • P - designation of the perimeter of the room, m;
 • A - bathroom width parameter, m;
 • B - overall length of the room;
 • H is the height of the wall.

Calculation scheme:

 • The total area of the room is obtained by adding the square meters of the individual walls of the bathroom;
 • Then, from the obtained value, one should subtract those sections that will not be tiled, for example, the area of the doorway to the room, or the window.

In order to reduce material consumption, the cladding is not done in the space under the bathroom. This option is possible if you plan to install a decorative screen. In this case, the height of the room for calculation is measured from the top level of the side.

Some sites provide a special calculator that allows you to determine the required amount of material for the purchase. With the help of such programs, it is possible to facilitate the task when calculating the amount of material if tiles of different shades are combined.

The formula for calculating tiles on the floor. How to calculate the tiles yourself?

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure

Repair often confronts us with specific tasks and technologies, requires special knowledge and skills. Often you have to use the help of specialists, at times increasing the budget of even an insignificant alteration.

When laying tiles, you can use the services of a design studio, tilers, and even do everything on a turnkey basis. And you can try to figure out some aspects yourself

We advise you to start small, however, no less important - to learn how to correctly calculate the required number of tiles for the future interior

There are several ways to lay tiles, respectively, and the material costs for different options will be different.

The basic way of laying: the tiles are laid out exactly in a row, parallel to the corners and walls. From the point of view of material savings, this is the most optimal way of laying, there is very little waste left.

Calculation method: room area / area of one tile = number of tiles. The number of tiles is rounded up.

In order to find out the required number of tiles in square meters, we multiply the number of tiles by the area of one tile.

Example. It is necessary to tile the floor of the room, 2.6 meters long and 2.4 meters wide, with tiles, 40 * 40 cm in size.

Room area = 2.6m × 2.4m = 6.24 sq.m.

Area of 1 tile = 40cm × 40cm = 1600 sq.cm = 0.16 sq.m.

Number of tiles = 6.24÷0.16 = 39 pieces.

Tile footage = 39pcs × 0.16 sq.m. = 6.24 sq.m.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure

Base Angle : The tiles are laid at an angle (eg 45°) to the walls. The drawing looks more interesting than with the basic method; laying allows you to hide some curvature of the wall surface. However, with this method of laying, the consumption of tiles is greater.

Calculation method: room area / area of one tile = number of tiles. To account for trimming, add 10% to the resulting number of whole tiles. Round the number up.

In order to find out the required number of tiles in square meters, we multiply the number of tiles by the area of one tile.

Example. It is necessary to tile the floor of the room, 1.6 meters long and 1.2 meters wide, with tiles measuring 30 * 30 cm.

Room area = 1.6m × 1.2m = 1.92 sq.m.

Area of 1 tile = 30cm × 30cm = 900 sq.cm = 0.09 sq.m.

Number of tiles = 1.92÷0.09 = 21.3 pcs.

Number of trimmed tiles = 21.3 + 10% = 23.43 pieces. = 24pcs

Tile footage = 24pcs × 0.09 sq.m. = 2.16 sq.m.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure

Chess: this way of laying brings liveliness and showiness to the interior. It can also help hide the imperfections of the walls. The classic version uses two contrasting tile colors, but it all depends on the design of your room - you can use adjacent shades.

Calculation method: room area / area of one tile = number of tiles. The resulting number is divided by 2 = the number of tiles of each color. Round the number of tiles of each color up.

In order to find out the required number of tiles of each color in square meters, we multiply the number of tiles by the area of one tile.

Example. It is necessary to tile the floor of the room, 3.6 meters long and 3.6 meters wide, with tiles of two colors, 60 * 60 cm in size.

Room area = 3.6m × 3.6m = 12.96 sq.m.

Area of 1 tile = 60cm × 60cm = 3600 sq.cm = 0.36 sq.m.

Number of tiles = 12.96÷0.36 = 36 pcs.

Number of tiles of each color: 36 ÷ 2 = 18 pcs.

Tile footage of each color = 18pcs × 0.36 sq.m. = 6.48 sq.m.

Total tile footage: 6.48 sq.m. × 2 = 12.96 sq.m.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure

Chess at an angle: tiles are laid at an angle relative to the walls, alternating in color. This method perfectly hides the curvature of the walls and allows you to visually expand the room.

Calculation method: room area / area of one tile = number of tiles. The resulting number is divided by 2 = the number of tiles of each color. To account for trimming, add 10% to the resulting number of whole tiles of each color. Round the number of tiles of each color up.

In order to find out the required number of tiles of each color in square meters, we multiply the number of tiles by the area of one tile.

Example. It is necessary to tile the floor of the room, 2.2 meters long and 2.8 meters wide, with tiles of two colors in the chess layout at an angle, 40 * 40 cm in size.

Room area = 2.2m × 2.8m = 6.16 sq.m.

Area of 1 tile = 40cm × 40cm = 1600 sq.cm = 0.16 sq.m.

Number of tiles = 6.16 ÷ 0.16 = 38.5 pcs. = 39 pcs.

Number of tiles of each color: 39 pcs ÷ 2 = 19.5 pcs. = 20 pcs.

The number of tiles of each color with undercutting = 20 + 10% = 22 pcs.

Footage of tiles of each color = 22 pcs × 0.16 sq.m. = 3.52 sq.m.

Total tile footage: 3.52 sq.m. × 2 = 7.04 sq.m.

Calculation methods

To reduce your costs, you need to try to measure the dimensions of the room as accurately as possible.Some elements in the process of laying will have to be cut into pieces.

It is often difficult for builders to combine the pattern on ceramics. Careless actions can spoil the appearance of the floor.

By room area

Before laying the tiles, it is recommended to measure the dimensions of the room. In this way, you can determine the consumption of tiles in square meters. In rooms that have a rectangular shape, it is best to use plain tiles.

You can measure the dimensions of the floor using a tape measure. The obtained values must be multiplied by 10%, since during the laying process the material can be damaged by one careless movement.

A room with complex geometry can be divided into regular shapes. These can be rectangles, circles, triangles and squares. Do not forget to measure the dimensions of the tile itself.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure

To understand the features of calculating the amount of tiles, consider the following example.

The owner of the apartment decided to use the direct laying method. After measuring the room, the following parameters were obtained:

 1. The width of the room on which it is planned to lay the tiles is 200 cm.
 2. The length of the room is 300 cm.

The owner decided to lay tiles with dimensions of 20 × 15 cm on the floor. Now we use a simple formula:

D/d1 x S/s1, where;

 • D and S - the length and width of the room;
 • d1 and s1 are the overall dimensions of the tile.

300/20=15 pcs.

200/15= 13.3 pcs.

Now you can calculate the total number of tiles.

15 x 13.3 = 200 pcs.

When installed diagonally

For laying tiles in rooms with uneven walls, you can use the diagonal method. The disadvantage of this method is the increase in material consumption by 15%.

During the installation process, specialists are faced with the need to cut tiles according to specified sizes.In a room with a complex configuration, it is quite difficult to calculate the amount of material.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure

First you need to determine the area of the floor on which the tile will be laid.

The total area of the room must be multiplied by a factor of 1.15.

For example, the owner of the apartment decided to lay the tiles in a diagonal way. The floor area is 19.53 m.

19, 53 sq.m. x 1.15 = 22.46 sq. m.

By number of rows

The method consists in determining the number of rows of elements on which the finishing material will be laid. To get the required value, divide the width of the room by the width of the tile. The resulting figure must be rounded up, since in the process of laying some elements will have to be cut off.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure

Piece method

Before buying expensive tiles, it is recommended to use the piece by piece method of calculating the amount of material.

The procedure can be divided into the following steps:

 1. First you need to measure the length and width of the floor area on which it is planned to carry out repair work.
 2. After that, you need to measure the dimensions of the tiles.
 3. The laying scheme can be pre-drawn on graph paper.

As an example, consider the following case. The owner decided to lay the tiles in the bathroom. After measuring the room with a tape measure, the owner received the following indicators:

 • length 1.75 m;
 • width 1.7 m.

The bathroom has a rectangular shape, without ledges and niches. For laying, it is planned to use tiles with dimensions of 33x33 cm. To calculate the area of the room, we multiply 1.75 by 1.7 m (2.975 sq. M). We round the resulting value to 3 square meters. m.

How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom: laying methods + calculation procedure

Now we divide the width of the room (1.7 m) by the size of the tile (0.33 cm).

170 / 0.33 = 5.1 pcs.

In the same way, we calculate the number of tiles, taking into account the length of the room.

175/0.33= 5.7 pcs.

After rounding, multiply the resulting values.

5.1 x 6 = 31.6 pcs.

To lay tiles in the bathroom, you must purchase at least 32 tiles.

Combined method

The need to use a combined method arises in the case of laying different types of tiles. To more accurately determine the amount of material, it is recommended to draw up a laying scheme.

To calculate correctly, you will need to make a sketch of the room

This requires taking into account:

 1. Ornament on the surface of ceramic elements.
 2. Areas without tiles.
 3. Mounting method.

Popular types include:

 1. Monotonous, without ornament.
 2. Drawing in the form of vertical or horizontal stripes.
 3. Miscellaneous inserts without ordering.
 4. Finished panel in the form of a picture.
 5. Several sections of the wall, each of which is painted in a different color.

Economic option

With this method, surfaces that come into contact with the liquid are exposed to the cladding - near the bath or shower. The rest of the surfaces are painted.

The main advantage of this method is savings. This significantly reduces the cost of materials. But a replacement without re-repair cannot be done.

Layout types

When drawing up a sketch, you need to choose a layout method:

 1. Direct is a simple and economical method. The elements are located strictly one above the other, docking is at an angle of 90 degrees vertically and horizontally.
 2. Diagonal layout implies an arrangement at an angle of 45 degrees.
 3. Chess. Each segment is offset relative to the previous one.

Drawing schemes for the wall

It starts after the sketch is finished. It includes:

 • Wall dimensions.
 • Areas without tiles.
 • Decorative inserts.

Take into account the dimensions of the elements and the width of the connections.

Calculation for direct nesting

To do this, it is calculated how many plates will fit in one row. To simplify the calculations, the width of the seam is taken into account. The result is rounded to the nearest whole number. Height is also calculated.

How to take into account areas without tiles?

On a sketch with a grid applied, certain areas are deleted. For example, for a door, you need to subtract the number of integer elements occupied by the opening. Then subtract the resulting value from the total.

Adjustment for the dimensions of the decor

A simple option is to select the decor so that its dimensions match the dimensions of the tile. In this case, it is enough to remove one of the rows of tiles and apply decor.

If the elements differ in size, the calculation rules will be similar to the calculation of sections without cladding.

Calculation for layout apart

With this method, even rows will require one more tile than odd ones. After calculating the total number of elements, drawing up a sketch, additional calculations are needed.

Diagonal layout calculation

With this layout, it is realistic to accurately calculate the number of tiles if a room diagram is drawn up on an appropriate scale.

How to correctly calculate the need for tiles

 • We measure the perimeter of the bathroom, that is, add up the lengths of all the walls.We measure its actual height with a tape measure. To get the area of the walls - multiply the length by the height.
 • To accurately calculate the tiles, you need to decide whether you will lay the tiles behind the bathroom or not. Everyone determines this for himself. If not, then subtract this amount from the total volume of the tile. Measures its height, multiply by the length and determine this value.
 • In addition, it is necessary to calculate the area of the doorway. Usually, a door measuring 2100x700mm is installed in the bathroom. This is 1.47 m2 - we also do not take into account.
 • Tiles should also be taken into account if you decide to make a screen for a tile bath. We carry out the calculation in the same way and add the resulting value to the total.
 • The total number of wall tiles was determined. Now we will divide it into a lower zone and an upper one, if you decide to get away from monotony, and you intend to make the upper zone several tones lighter than the lower one and separate them with a frieze. This will greatly improve the design of the entire room.
 • As a rule, the height of the bottom panel of the tile is determined based on the height of the washbasin, and is equal to 90 centimeters. Above is the frieze and the top panel of a lighter tone. Everything is very simple. You can calculate the total number of the lower zone of the tile by multiplying the perimeter (without the doorway) by the size of the panel = 0.9m. Here we add the amount of material to the tile screen. Calculate the top of your lining in the same way. From the total amount we subtract the lower part, the size of the doorway. You can add a few decorations for decoration.
 • It is quite easy to calculate the need for tiles on the floor - we multiply the width of the room by its length. If there are niches, ledges, then we take all this into account.

For clarity, I want to perform the calculation with you in digital terms.

An example of calculating the need for facing tiles:

I will not introduce symbols and write formulas, otherwise while you figure out what this letter means in the formula, you will get completely confused. I will write the calculation sequence in detail.

1. As a basis, I will take the size of my square bathroom 1.7 m x 1.7 m.

2. Perimeter = 1.7m x 2 walls in length + 1.7m x 2 walls in width = 6.8 linear meters. We take the height as 2.5 meters, then the total area is 6.8 p.m. x 2.5m = 17m2. We will assume that you will also veneer the space behind the bathroom.

3. We calculated the door opening above and it is equal to 1.47m2.

5. We determine the total need for tiles: 17m2 (total) - 1.47 m2 (doorway) + 0.87m2 (bathroom screen) = 16.4m2.

6. Next, you need to calculate the tiles in the bathroom for the upper and lower areas.

The bottom panel is 90 cm, so the need for tiles will be {6.8m (perimeter) - 0.7 (doorway)} x 0.9m = 5.49 m2 + 0.87 (screen) = 6.36 m2.

The need for the top panel, respectively: 6.8m x 1.6 - 0.7 x 1.2 (upper part of the doorway) = 10.04 m2.

We check ourselves: bottom = 6.34 m2 + top panel = 10.04 m2, and only 16.4 m2. Everything converges, they counted correctly.

But this figure includes the frieze. Again, I will calculate its amount using the example of my bathroom. I have its length = 200mm. Subtract the doorway from the perimeter of the room and get the length of the frieze: 6.8m - 0.7m = 6.1m. Then its quantity is: 6.1: 0.2 m = 31 whole piece. Depending on the size of the frieze, you will adjust the total need for tiles by subtracting the area of the frieze elements, but these are such crumbs.

Finished with the walls, it remains to calculate the tiles on the floor. It is quite simple and = 1.7m x 1.7m = 2.9m2.

Depending on the size of your room, the presence of corners, turns, niches, you should provide a margin for cutting tiles. The smaller the room, the more waste. Therefore, its quantity should be taken 2-4% more from the calculation obtained. You can count the tiles and individually, but for this you need to know the size you have chosen. Simply divide the total area by the area of one tile.

We managed to calculate the tiles in the bathroom, now it's up to the masters - they need to be laid with high quality so that the design of your bathroom is elegant, practical and unique.
