Working with child actors

History of the house

Built in 1920, the house belonged to a married couple at the time of filming. It is located at 671 Lincoln Ave, Winnetka, IL 60093.

The couple briefly owned it when the production company approached the family to turn their new home into a movie set. Director Chris Columbus later stated that finding a home to fit his vision was no easy task:

The red-brick Georgian house sits on half an acre of land and boasts five bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms.As is known from the film, when someone enters the house, the legendary staircase is the first to greet guests. The feature of the house was nooks and crannies where Kevin could hide and set traps for robbers. The attic where he spent the night with his cousin is actually an attic bedroom.

Finding the perfect home

Another challenge for filmmakers was finding a suitable mansion for filming. We were looking for a house that was visually appealing and cozy, but at the same time suitable for setting up numerous traps, including in terms of angles and shadows.

As a result, the desired location was found in the town of Winnetka near Chicago. Interestingly, the owners of the cottage lived in it all the time while filming was going on. The film studio provided them with an apartment, but when the owners carefully read the contract, they decided to stay at home: according to the document, in the absence of the owners, the film crew could do anything on the site, including tearing down the walls.

Fortunately, the destruction was avoided. However, already at the premiere of the film, the owners of the mansion saw that Kevin, it turns out, cut down the top of one of the fir trees in the backyard in order to put it at home and dress it up for Christmas.

The rest of the scenes were filmed close to the main location. In particular, a tree house was built specifically for filming, which was demolished after the completion of the film.

Filmmakers also used the premises of a local school. In the pool, for example, they built the basement of a neighbor's house in order to flood it later. The mansion's kitchen was also located in the school building. In addition, scenes that took place in the business class of the aircraft were filmed on the adjacent territory. And the role of the Paris airport took over Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
