Criteria for choosing a shop drip irrigation system
If you decide not to bother with the independent manufacture of the system, but to buy a ready-made one in the store, you will find a huge selection of all kinds of devices with different levels of functionality and prices. In general, the cost of such systems is low, and therefore any summer resident or gardener can afford the installation of automatic drip irrigation.
Before you go to the store, you must first decide on your needs, namely:
- do you need maximum autonomy, or are you ready to put up with the periodic filling of tanks and the independent start-up of water without a timer;
- where you want to use the purchased system. It can be both open ground and a greenhouse, flower bed or greenhouse. Some models are effective only for their places of operation;
- What irrigation area do you expect and how many plants do you want to cover with an irrigation network? Some sets are very modest and suitable for small needs, others, on the contrary, allow you to turn around to the fullest;
- whether you need durability, or you are willing to buy an inexpensive set for several seasons and then replace all components after they are deformed.
By answering these questions, you will know exactly what kind of automatic irrigation system you need. If you rely on autonomy, you should choose plumbing systems that can take irrigation water directly from the high pressure network and work on an electronic timer. If you need a small greenhouse system, simple options costing less than 1000 rubles are suitable, designed for a short length of beds and a small number of plants. If you have a whole garden that needs watering, then you will have to look for more powerful counterparts with many lines and droppers.
From the technical parameters, we recommend paying attention to the following points:
- Tape pitch is the distance between the holes that bring water to the root system of an individual plant. An important parameter, since the frequency of planting your seedlings depends on it.
- The thickness of the tape - not only the throughput of the system, but also its durability depends on this parameter. Tapes with a larger diameter are generally more reliable and resistant to the environment.
- Working pressure - some systems are not designed for high pressure. If your water supply network has an increased pressure, you must take this into account when purchasing the product.
- Water consumption - the maximum possible water consumption per dropper. Based on this parameter, it is possible to calculate how much water will be required for irrigation and at what rate it will be consumed.
Types of pumps for irrigation
Consider all the main types of household pumps used for irrigation of small summer cottages and garden plots.
type of instalation
As mentioned above, depending on the installation location, pumps are divided into surface and submersible:
Surface equipment is called equipment that is installed next to a water source or at some distance from it. A suction hose is lowered into the source, and the device itself is on the surface, which is very convenient for its operation. You can install such a pump for irrigation from a barrel, well or reservoir, but it is not suitable for pumping water from a deep artesian well, since the lifting height does not exceed 8-9 meters. The advantages of such models include ease of maintenance, mobility and low cost, and the disadvantages are noise.

In the photo - a check valve with a strainer
Submersible pumps operate when completely submerged in water. In wells with a depth of more than 8 meters, only equipment that must be selected taking into account their diameter can work.But it is quite applicable to pumping water from other sources. Its advantages: high pressure characteristics, versatility, quiet operation. The disadvantage can be considered the complexity of maintenance, for which the device must be pulled to the surface.
Well submersible pump for watering the garden Brook and its device
When installing surface-type pumps, their location should be chosen taking into account the suction depth, the value of which should not be less than the sum of the distance from the surface to the water surface and a quarter of the distance from the source to the pump.
Example. If the depth of the well is 4 meters, and the suction depth of the pump is 8 meters, then the distance between them should be no more than 16 meters: 8 \u003d 4 + 1/4x16.
Power type
The most convenient for operation are electric pumps powered by 220 V. By equipping them with a membrane tank, a pressure switch and a pressure gauge, you can equip automatic pump watering stations that will make irrigation of plantings comfortable for you and will reduce energy consumption.
If electricity has not yet been supplied to the site or is supplied intermittently, it makes sense to think about purchasing manual or gasoline units.
Piston and rod type hand pumps are manually actuated by means of a lever that raises and lowers a piston located inside a cylindrical housing.
Pumping water is faster and more convenient than carrying buckets from a well
Four-stroke engines are used in the design of gasoline pumps and motor pumps. They can supply water from a depth of up to 10 meters.

Irrigation type
If you live outside the city and you have the opportunity to irrigate as needed, after collecting water in containers for warming up and settling, you just need to decide on the required amount of water for one-time irrigation and choose equipment that will provide the necessary pressure and flow. Instructions for the pump with technical parameters will help you with this.
The pump must provide enough pressure to operate the sprinklers
Many summer residents use two pumps at once: one submersible for lifting water from a well or well and filling containers, and the second surface directly for irrigation.
And if you visit the dacha on short trips and worry that the plants will wither in your absence, it is better to choose pumps for drip irrigation. Such systems save both water and electricity, and your time, although at first they are expensive.
A pumping station for watering a garden in this way includes a submersible pump installed in a well or well, equipped with automation. Using the timer, you need to set the frequency of watering and set the desired pressure mode on the relay. 1-2 bar is enough for the system to work normally, and even a simple inexpensive pump can provide such pressure.
Much more important is its reliability during cyclic operation. In other words, he must calmly endure periodic switching on and off. At the same time, keep in mind that if the debit of the well and the power of the water-lifting equipment do not match, it will have to be turned off more often in anticipation of a new flow of water, which will lead to faster wear.
It is also possible to equip the system with a storage tank installed on a hill, into which water will be pumped, heated, and then flow by gravity into the distribution pipeline.
submersible pump rating
The rating includes the best submersible pumps that have passed a rigorous selection. All models received high quality ratings from experts, a large percentage of positive feedback from ordinary users. The selection took into account compliance with the following key parameters:
- Power;
- Performance;
- Water level control;
- lifting height;
- transfer distance;
- Max pressure;
- destination category;
- Rated weight;
- Installation method;
- Protection against overheating, dry running;
- body material;
- Functionality;
- Noise level;
- Working temperature.
Safety characteristics, cost, warranty period were also taken into account. The pros and cons of each individual model were considered. As a result, the best nominees were divided into three application categories.
The best pumps to increase water pressure
drip tapes

Another type of irrigation system is tape. They are significantly cheaper than pipes equipped with droppers and do not require manual adjustment. Such designs are ideal for plantings of the same type: potato ridges, berries, tomato plantations.
The essence of the system is simple - watering is carried out using thin polyethylene sleeves with holes through which water enters. The quality of irrigation and the service life of the structure depend on the thickness of the plastic walls. The best option is a tape with walls of 0.2 mm.It is suitable for any planting, guaranteed to serve for several seasons, does not suffer from random stones, rodents and pests. Tapes with walls from 0.12 to 0.15 can be used for watering summer plants growing on soft soils. Usually such a system is changed after a couple of years.
Drip tapes are divided into several groups:
- slotted;
- labyrinth;
Slotted tapes are equipped with an internal labyrinth mechanism that reduces water pressure and its speed. The disadvantage of such systems is the need for thorough water filtration, small debris will quickly disable the tape. In order for the design to work smoothly, you can buy a filter and replace it in a timely manner.
Which drip irrigation system do you choose?
HoseTape
Labyrinth systems have a relief on the surface, it reduces the rate of water supply, promotes its uniform distribution and heating. This design is cheaper than the others, but the embossed tapes are easily damaged. In order for moisture to reach the roots, when laying the system, you need to monitor the location of the drip zone.
Emitter ribbons are the most convenient and modern option, suitable for any planting. Flat drippers are built into the holes of the tape, creating turbulence in the incoming water. This reduces the likelihood of blockages, the system is self-cleaning during operation. There are compensated and non-compensated options on sale, the former are intended for areas with difficult terrain, the latter are best used in greenhouses.
When choosing emitter tapes, it is necessary to evaluate the throughput of droppers. Universal option - consumption from 1 to 1.5 liters per hour. This mode is suitable for most crops and different types of soil.
Among the best tape drip systems, buyers note the following:

Drip irrigation from a barrel
There are some nuances in this matter. For example, gardeners often notice that gravity flow is not a reliable and not intensive enough method of watering. And the pump is an add-on. spending. Therefore, there are several ways to speed up the process. One of them is to raise the barrel not by 1.5 meters, but by three. This technique will also help prevent stagnation, and as a result, the accumulation of plaque.
But inside the barrel, the litter can become many times larger, because due to the fact that it stands high, it is not always convenient to climb up in order to remove unnecessary filling. Therefore, the filter right inside the tank is an excellent solution. You can, of course, follow the example of some craftsmen, and use ordinary capron for this. But the factory filter is not so expensive.
The output of the pipe from the canister also has its own characteristics. It will be necessary to organize a tap, after which a filtration system, and then you will need an adapter made in the form of a 90 degree angle.
10 Dgmebonco

This device ended up at the end of our rating for only one reason - unlike other lots, it is not intended for small beds or indoor plants, but for full-fledged farms. In fact, this is the best drip irrigation system from Aliexpress. It is equipped with a powerful pump that allows you to spray a large amount of water. Irrigation system Gardena (Gardena)
This is a multi-component system with different types of droppers and irrigation devices. There are devices specifically for drip irrigation, there are sprinklers of various devices and types. Drip irrigation "Gardena" is produced in Germany.
These devices work from the water supply (including from the pumping station) and have their own filters that lower and stabilize the pressure in the system. The pressure stabilization device is called the "Master Block", they are designed to supply 1000 l / h or 2000 l / h. A distribution hose is connected to them, to which various devices for supplying water to plants are then mounted.
To connect the pieces of hose, unique fittings are used, into which the hose is simply inserted. It is fixed with a special spring, ensuring tightness. If necessary, the connection is disconnected by pressing a special lever, the hose is released from the clamp and removed.
For drip irrigation, there are droppers of the following types:
- with a fixed flow rate of 2 and 4 l/h;
- self-regulating at 2 l / h, allowing you to supply the same amount of water throughout the irrigation line;
- internal - inserted into the gap of the hose with a fixed water flow;
- with adjustable supply from 0 to 20 l / h - terminal and internal
For more information about the Gardena drip irrigation and irrigation system, see the video.
Which to choose?
The pump should be compact simple and convenient
Submersible or outdoor
The desire to save money is quite natural, especially when the salary resembles change at the supermarket checkout. Even if this is the case in your case, then the principle “what is cheaper is better” does not apply to choosing the right unit. Which pump is better - submersible or external? Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages, but, most importantly, each has its own characteristics.
Let's define the area first. There are important questions that need to be answered, where the table will help.
Conditions in which the pump will be used
Surface
Submersible/drainage
With the help of the pump, only watering will be carried out, or it will also be used in order to gain capacity.
It can be used both for pumping containers and for watering the garden.
Same.
How many meters from the water source to the tank.
Depending on the power, it is capable of pumping water for tens of meters, only it must be located close to the water source. This is due to the fact that the length of the suction hose should be no more than 9 m. If it was planned to install it on your site, and stretch several tens of meters of the hose to the water source, then this will not work.
The distance that the pump can pump water depends on its power and design features. Drainage can be with a grinder, so it will grind small debris. The unit must be immersed in water, at least at the bottom. For submersible operation, a depth of about 1 m is needed.
What is the distance from the source of water intake to the farthest point on your site, and what is its volume.
Usually the manufacturer indicates how far the pump is able to supply water.
You need to have some power reserve, because it may happen that you will water the far section of the garden longer than the scheduled time, since the pressure will be very weak.
Same.
If the site is hilly, then where will the water be supplied - up or down.
If the site is hilly, it is important to consider that a 1 m rise in the water column will reduce the delivery distance by 10 m with a 1 inch hose diameter. When the liquid is fed down, it can flow by gravity
In this case, a powerful pump is not needed.
Same.
The type of irrigation selected (drip, under the root, sprinkler, etc.).
When watering at the root, you don’t need to stand above the hose - it can be shifted to a new place from time to time, so a large pressure that can erode the roots of the plant is not needed. The sprinkler will not work effectively with low pressure, so the equipment must be powerful enough.For drip irrigation systems, an automated system is used to maintain the required pressure in the system.
Same.
Noise level.
The noise level is very high, but it can be reduced by a rubber lining or if installed in a shed, but this is not always possible due to the limitation of the length of the suction hose.
The pump itself is not noisy, when it works in water, it is almost inaudible.
The need for a filter.
A filter is needed in all cases where there is a possibility of debris getting into the pump impeller. In addition, a check valve is required.
The drain pump does not need a filter - the lower grate can act as a limiter, preventing large particles of debris from passing through. When using a submersible pump (rotary or vibratory) good filtration is required.
Having decided on the type, we will figure out how to choose the right device for power.
9 Smart Irrigation Sprinkler

Controlling electrical appliances from a smartphone has not been surprising or shocking for a long time. And now you can even water your houseplants using a dedicated phone app. This device has many settings, including the intensity and frequency of watering, as well as the layout of the inclusion. And all this is configured in a simple and intuitive mobile application. By the way, the simplicity of the application is a very important factor, since it does not have a translation into Russian. But even if you do not know English, there will be no problems. Everything is intuitive and accessible to any user.
The device is equipped with a built-in pump, that is, it consumes liquid not flowing, but from a container. In the application, you can set how much water to apply to the soil and at what time to do it.The kit comes with hoses and splitters, but there is only one outlet, so if you use the device for watering several plants, you should calculate the amount of fluid given off based on the total number of pots.
